4 Surface The soft organic shapes not described by geometric primitives. Mechanically, these are used in many applications - Flow: Pump housings, Turbine blades - Transitions: Blends (not rounds) Page 4

5 What s a Surface? For today s purposes, we ll just call it the contoured stuff. These faces are commonly used for - Aesthetics: Consumer goods - Anytime no straight edge exists in the model Page 5

6 Surface Tools ST6 lays out the commands in the Surfacing Tab to allow this workflow to be remembered easily. - Progressive exposure of Surfacing tools Curves frame the form. They give shape and character to the contour. - Curves have no influence over the curvature of the sheet. - Curves form the boundaries of a sheet. Surfaces fill the form. They give volume and influence to other adjacent faces. - Some surfaces are open because 2 elements are enough to define a form - Some surfaces are closed because 3 or more elements are needed to fully define the form Page 6

7 Surface Tools Surfaces require sketches, curves, or other faces in the model. Curves frame the form. They give shape and character to the contour. - Form the boundaries of a sheet. - May be 2D Sketches, 3D Curves, or Edges - Curves have no influence over the curvature of the sheet. - The sketch plane has influence (normal, parallel) Page 7

31 What you will learn This course will explore the use of contoured elements and curves in Solid Edge. Users attending this class will be exposed to new ways of altering imported models with highly contoured faces and no model history. Styled parts will be created to demonstrate the use of features that produce organic shapes. Users will see basic techniques of sheet construction that are augmented with classic modeling tricks which will drastically reduce model generation time. New feature creation utilizing multi-body processes will introduce solid modelers to the common themes in surfacing. Page 31 June 29
