Table of Contents Welcome to Solid Edge University 2016 Introduction Surface Definition Curves Creating Surfaces Curvature and Analysis Repairing Surfaces Page 4
Welcome to Class! Dan Vinson Solid Edge - Planning, Product Manager (12 years) Product Designer Surfacing Enthusiast (Surfer?) Page 5
Thank You Cambridge Team Parasolid Surfacing Team Solid Edge Jason Inglis Charles Machine Olivier & Ludovic Groupe SEB Page 6
Surfaces The soft organic shapes not described by geometric primitives. Mechanically, these are used in many applications - Flow: Pump housings, Turbine blades - Transitions: Blends (not rounds) May be functional and decorative. Page 7
What s a Surface? For today s purposes, we ll just call it the contoured stuff. These faces are commonly used for - Aesthetics: Consumer goods - Anytime no straight edge exists in the model Page 8
Surface Tools ST6 lays out the commands in the Surfacing Tab to allow this workflow to be remembered easily. Progressive exposure of Surfacing tools Curves frame the form. They give shape and character to the contour. - Curves have no influence over the curvature of the sheet. - Curves form the boundaries of a sheet. Surfaces fill the form. They give volume and influence to other adjacent faces. - Some surfaces are open because 2 elements are enough to define a form - Some surfaces are closed because 3 or more elements are needed to fully define the form Page 9
Surface Tools Surfaces require sketches, curves, or other faces in the model. Curves frame the form. They give shape and character to the contour. - Form the boundaries of a sheet. - May be 2D Sketches, 3D Curves, or Edges - Curves define the basic path of the resulting surface sheet - The sketch plane has influence (normal, parallel) Page 10
Better Curves Good Tools made better. 2D Curve Tool - Tool promoted to expose on Sketch Tab - Added color to Control Points - Simplify Curve Page 11
2D Curve Creation Subtle Trick to creating 2 curves with different Edit Point Structure ST6 supports Inking a 2D curve. - Inking = [LMB down, Drag, LMB up] - When Inked, only end points are recorded Curve Polygon Points End Point End Point Page 12
Title Subtle Trick to creating 2 curves with different Edit Point Structure Typical 2D curve Creation - 1 LMB mouse click creates an Edit Point on the curve - [LMB click, LMB click] - Greater control due to higher point count (greater resolution) Curve Polygon Points End Point Edit Point Edit Point End Point Page 13
2D Curve Demos Page 14
Good Tools Made Better Key Point Curves Numeric Tangency Control Curvature Continuous Tangency added Lock to View during creation prevents warped paths. - Wire harness: Wires, Cables, Bundles - Explode Render Animate: Camera and Motion paths Page 15
Curve Styles High Resolution Monitors + 1 pixel width curves = poor visibility New Style added to color manager to define curves - 3 Pixel width - May be altered - New Curves only. Will not affect current curves Pre- ST6 required a unique style Page 16
Key Point Curve Demo Page 17
Curvature The relationship with other tangent faces. Types of relationships include: - Natural: no influence on curvature is carried over from face to face. Page 18
Curvature The relationship with other tangent faces. Types of relationships include: - Tangent: curvature is influenced as linear. Page 19
Curvature The relationship with other tangent faces. Types of relationships include: - Tangent: Curvature influenced as an exponent. Page 20
Improved Surfacing Features Blue Surf - Curvature Control Handles - Surface Visualization - Numeric Value Input Tangency Magnitude - Common / Individual Tangency Magnitude Control - Default to Most Recently Used settings Page 21
Blue Surf Demo Page 22
Improved Surfacing Features Bounded Surface - Tangency Control Handles - Close Boundary Option - Curvature Continuous Allowed - Surface Visualization added Page 23
Bounded Surface Demo Page 24
Center Tangency Curvature Continuous option available throughout ST6 Surfacing Tools - Blue Surf - Bounded Surface - Rounds (Blends) - Key Point Curves Curvature across a centerline should be Tangent Continuous Page 25
2D Curve Tangency Demo Page 26
Surface Inspection ST6 Introduces new tools to investigate the model Surface Visualization - UV lines and curvature combs of a face - Used in Features for single face inspection - Standalone Tool for inspecting many faces Page 27
Surface Inspection ST6 Introduced new tools to investigate the model Section Curvature - Curvature relative to a plane (contour gauge) - See multiple faces curvature on a common scale Page 28
Surface Inspection ST6 Introduces new tools to visualize the model Reflective Plane - See the entire volume of the model without the Mirror feature. - Multiple planes of reflection allowed - Optional transparency of the reflected image Page 29
Surface Inspection Demo Page 30
Reflective Plane Demo Page 31
Redefine New way of editing surfaced models. Replacing multiple dumb face with one smart feature that can be edited - Add Key Point Curves from input faces - Add 2D sketches at boundary when possible - Control continuity at Boundary Page 32
Redefine Use #1 (Patch) Smoothing can be achieved by patching and redefining. - Multiple Panel - Interior Patch - Curvature Smoothing Page 33
Redefine Patch Smoothing can be achieved by patching and redefining Page 34
