We show counterexmples to vrious strengthened versions of this conjecture. Introduction Let P nd Q be two point sets, ech with n points, nd with h points on their convex hulls. Tringultions T P of P nd T Q of Q re comptible if there is bijection φ from P to Q such tht bc is clockwise-ordered tringle of T P if nd only if φ()φ(b)φ(c) is clockwise-ordered tringle of T Q. A min ppliction of comptible tringultions is the problem of morphing. If we hve comptible tringultions of two point sets in the plne then the re bounded by the convex hull of the first set cn be morphed to the re bounded by the convex hull of the second set. In the cse of very similr point sets, liner motion of ech tringle will work. For the generl cse, there re more sophisticted plnrity-preserving morphs [6, 2]. 2 In 2003 Aichholzer, Aurenhmmer, Hurtdo, nd Krsser [] conjectured tht comptible tringultions lwys exist: Conjecture. If P nd Q re point sets in generl position (i.e. with no 3 points colliner) with the sme crdinlity nd the sme size convex hull then they hve comptible tringultions. We prove tht severl strengthened forms of the conjecture re flse.. Definitions nd Preliminries A tringultion of finite set of points, P, in the plne is mximl set of segments pq, p, q P such tht no two segments b nd cd cross, i.e. intersect in point tht is not common endpoint of the segments. We ssume tht the points P do not ll lie on one line. Then tringultion is plnr grph whose interior fces re ll tringles [5]. From the definition we immeditely get: Clim. Consider set of points P. If, b P hve the property tht the interior of segment b is not intersected by ny other segment pq with p, q P, then b must be prt of ny tringultion of P. This clim implies tht the convex hull segments re prt of ny tringultion. We cn lso use the clim to show tht certin other segments must be in ny tringultion: Clim 2. Let p be point of the convex hull of point set P. Suppose tht when we remove p from the point set, the interior points q,..., q t become convex hull vertices. Then the segments pq i, i =... t must be prt of ny tringultion of P. Proof. Ech segment pq i stisfies the condition for Clim. 2 Colliner Points Aichholzer et l. [] gve counterexmple to show tht Conjecture fils if there re colliner points. Their exmple hs n = 7 nd is shown in Figure. In this section we give smller counterexmple with n = 6. We lso give n lternte counterexmple with n = 7. Furthermore, we show tht there is no counterexmple with n 5 points. Figure : The counterexmple to Conjecture in cse of colliner points from Aichholzer et l. []. 2
Figure 2: Point sets P nd Q. x y z b c b c Figure 3: T P, T Q, nd T Q2. Let P nd Q be the left nd right point sets of Figure 2, respectively. We clim tht comptible tringultion between P nd Q does not exist. To do this, first we will prove tht the tringultions T P, T Q nd T Q2 s shown in Figure 3 re the only tringultions for their point sets. Then, we will show tht T P is comptible with neither T Q nor T Q2. First consider point set P. Observe tht every edge of tringultion T P is forced by Clim. Now consider point set Q. Two edges from ech point on the convex hull to, b nd c re forced by Clim 2. If we dd n dditionl edge from convex hull point to n interior point we get tringultion T Q2, nd its rottionlly symmetric copies. If we do not dd ny dditionl edges from convex hull points then tringultion T Q is the unique possibility. To show tht P nd Q re not comptible, we look t the degrees of the hull points of their tringultions. T P s hull points hve degrees of 3, 5, nd 5. T Q s hve degrees 4, 4, nd 4, nd T Q2 s hve degrees 4, 4, nd 5. Therefore, the tringultion T P is comptible with neither T Q nor T Q2. Since these re the only tringultions, we cn conclude tht no tringultion exists between the point sets P nd Q. We give nother counterexmple with n = 7 in Figure Comptible tringultions of smll point sets with collinerities In this subsection we prove tht the bove counterexmple with n = 6 is the smllest possible. In other words, we prove tht ny point sets with n 5 points hve comptible tringultions even in the presence of colliner points. We do this by proving the stronger result tht ny point sets with t most 2 internl points hve comptible tringultions, even in the presence of collinerities. This implies tht ny point 3
x Figure 4: Another counterexmple to Conjecture for the cse of colliner points. Observe tht the left hnd tringultion is unique nd point x hs degree 6, but no point on the right cn hve degree 6 in ny tringultion. sets with n 5 points hve comptible tringultions becuse the convex hull hs t lest 3 points, leving t most 2 internl points. Theorem. If two points sets of size n (possibly with colliner points) hve or 2 internl points, then they hve comptible tringultion. Aichholzer et l. [] proved this for point sets with no collinerities. We give proof tht hndles collinerities. In fct they proved the stronger result tht there is comptible tringultion even when the convex hull mpping is forced, i.e. when one point of the convex hull of the first point set is mpped to one point of the convex hull of the second point set. However, tht stronger result is no longer true in the presence of collinerities s shown in Figure 5. Figure 5: With the indicted mpping of convex hull points, these point sets hve no comptible tringultion. Note tht the tringultions re unique. Proof of Theorem. For one internl point, construct comptible tringultions by dding edges from the internl point to ll points on the convex hull. Now consider two points sets P nd Q tht ech hve two internl points. Following the proof of Aichholzer et l. [] we will construct line l P through the two internl points of P nd line l Q through the internl points of Q, nd rgue tht we cn mp two points P nd b P of P tht lie on opposite sides of l P, to two points Q nd b Q of Q tht lie on opposite sides of l Q. Then we construct comptible tringultions s shown in Figure 6. If P hs convex hull point c P on the line l P (i.e. colliner with the two internl points) nd Q lso hs convex hull point c Q on the line l Q then we mp these points to ech other, let P nd b P be the two neighbours of c P on the convex hull of P, nd let Q nd b Q be the two neighbours (in the sme clockwise order) of c Q on the convex hull of Q. Observe tht P nd b P lie on strictly 4
Figure 6: When nd b re on opposite sides of the line through the two internl points, we tringulte by joining nd b to the two internl points, then joining every other convex hull point to the unique internl point it sees. b opposite sides of l P nd similrly, Q nd b Q lies on strictly opposite sides of l Q in Q. Thus we hve found the points we need in this cse. In the remining situtions, one of P or Q hs no convex hull points on the line through its interior points. Suppose without loss of generlity tht P hs this property. Orient the lines l P nd l Q verticlly. Since the convex hull of P hs t lest 3 points, nd none of them lie on l P, one side of l P must hve t lest 2 convex hull points. Suppose this is the right-hnd side. Let q be the bottom point where l Q intersects the convex hull of Q. Note tht q my or my not be point of Q. See Figure 7. Strting from q nd considering the clockwise-ordered convex hull of Q, let Q be the first point of Q strictly fter q, nd let b Q be the lst point of Q strictly before q. If q is not in Q then Q nd b Q re djcent on the convex hull, nd otherwise, they re seprted by one convex hull point. Now consider P. Let p be the bottom point where l P intersects the convex hull of P. Note tht p is not in P. Let P be the first point of P fter p in the clockwise-ordered convex hull. If q nd q b re djcent on the convex hull of Q, let b P be the lst point of P before p in the clockwise-ordered convex hull (Figure 7(c), (d)), nd otherwise, let b P be the second lst point ((Figure 7(), (b)). Becuse P hs t lest 2 convex hull points to the left of l P, b P is to the left of l P. Thus we hve found the points we need. 3 Specifying prt of the mpping Any comptible tringultions must mp convex hull points to convex hull points, nd in the sme clockwise order. There is still one free choice point p on the convex hull of point set P cn be mpped to ny point of the convex hull of Q. Aichholzer, et l. mke the stronger conjecture tht comptible tringultions exist even when the mpping of p to point of the convex hull of Q is fixed. We exmined wht hppens when the mpping is specified for more points. Our exmple in Figure 8 shows tht the conjecture fils if we specify the mpping of the convex hull nd of one internl point. 5
b P P P Q b P P p () (b) q P Q P p b P P q b P (c) (d) Figure 7: Finding the comptible pir P nd Q. 4 Specifying some of the edges The convex hull edges must be present in ny tringultion of point set, i.e. they re forced. We exmined wht hppens when we specify other edges tht must be present in the tringultion. Note tht two simple polygons on n points do not lwys hve comptible tringultions [3], so if we specify n edges tht must be in the tringultion then there my be no comptible tringlution. Our exmple in Figure 9 shows tht even specifying one non-convex hull edge tht must be included in the tringultion leds to counterexmple. Observe tht for the point set on the left, every convex hull point is forced to hve edges to two internl points by Clim 2. However, the required edge on the right prevents the left-hnd convex hull point from hving edges to two internl points. 5 Steiner points when the mpping is specified Another direction of reserch on comptible tringltions is to llow the ddition of extr points, clled Steiner points. Although proof of Conjecture would imply tht two point sets hve comptible tringultions with no Steiner points, there hs been some prtil progress on bounding the number of Steiner points needed. Dnciger, et l. [4] showed tht two Steiner points suffice if they my be plced fr outside the convex hull of the points. Aichholzer, et l. [] showed tht liner number of Steiner points inside the convex hull lwys suffice. This is in contrst to the cse of two polygons where qudrtic number of Steiner points lwys suffice nd re sometimes necessry [3]. 6
b b Figure 8: When the mpping of points nd b is specified there is no comptible tringultion becuse the forced edges shown on the left cross on the right. Figure 9: If we require the internl edge shown on the right, then there is no comptible tringultion between these point sets. In this section we explore the sitution, which rises in some pplictions, where the mpping of the points is given s prt of the input. In this cse, comptible tringultions might not exist, s shown in Figure 8. In order to get comptible tringultions we must dd Steiner points. In Figure 0 we give n exmple of two mpped point sets with 6 points ech, where comptible tringultions require the ddition of two Steiner points. A solution with two Steiner points is shown in Figure, nd we rgue below tht one Steiner point is not sufficient. It would be interesting to find polynomil time lgorithm to test if two mpped point sets hve comptible tringultions with no Steiner points, or to show tht the problem is NP-complete. Clim 3. The point sets shown in Figure 0 do not hve comptible tringultions with just one Steiner point. Proof. Note tht in comptible tringultions, ech point must hve the sme neighbours in clockwise order. Using this property, we cn show tht one Steiner point is not enough to comptibly tringulte the two point sets with the given mpping. Clim 2 forces edges (3, 6), (2, 5) in P nd edges (2, 6), (3, 5) in Q. Observe tht edges (3, 5) nd (2, 6) cross in P nd edges (3, 6) nd (2, 5) cross in Q. To obtin comptible tringultions of the point sets with single Steiner point, we must plce so tht it elimintes the crossing edges. Hence must be plced such tht it breks one of (3, 5) nd (2, 6) nd one of (3, 6) nd (2, 5). 7
Figure 0: The two blue point sets, with the indicted mpping of points, do not hve comptible tringultions, but the ddition of the two smll red points llows comptible tringultions s shown in Figure. First consider plcing so tht it breks edge (3, 6) in P nd edge (3, 5) in Q s shown in Figure 2. Note tht in P, must be plced to the left of the line through nd 6, nd below the line through 2 nd 6. Point is restricted to the nlogous region in Q. In P, by Clim 2, we must hve the edge (2, 5). Similrly, in Q we must hve the edge (2, 6). Thus these edges must be in both tringultions. However, the cyclic order of the two edges round point 2 is different in P thn in Q. Thus there cn be no comptible tringultion of the point sets with the given mpping in this cse. We use similr rgument for the cse when breks edges (2, 5) nd (2, 6). Next consider plcing so tht it breks edge (3, 6) in P nd edge (2, 6) in Q. Clim 2 forces edges (, 3) nd (, 6) in P. To brek edge (2, 6) in Q, must be plced below the line through (3, 6), hence comes before point 5 in the clockwise ordering of neighbours of 3 in Q. To obtin the sme ordering in P, we need below the line (3, 5), but then edge (, 6) crosses edge (3, 5) s 6 is bove (3, 5) s shown in Figure 3. Therefore we still cnnot comptibly tringulte the point sets with the given mpping. Finlly, the cse where we plce to brek edge (2, 5) in P nd edge (3, 5) in Q is symmetric.
