Volumes of olids of Revolution. Unified pproch Jorge Mrtín-Morles nd ntonio M. Oller-Mrcén rxiv:5.v [mth.ho] Jun Centro Universitrio de l Defens - IUM. cdemi Generl Militr, Ctr. de Huesc s/n. 59, Zrgoz, pin. Introduction The computtion of the volume of solids of revolution is very common topic in undergrdute clculus courses [, 6]. Usully two methods re presented in textbooks, nmely:. The disk method, which roughly consists of decomposing the solid into slices tht re perpendiculr to the xis of revolution.. The shell method, tht considers the solid s series of concentric cylindricl shells wrpping the xis. From geometricl point of view these two methods re quite different nd it is the shpe of the solid wht motivtes the choice between one or nother. Nevertheless, from n nlyticl point of view, both methods re equivlent nd they cn be relted using the well-known formul for integrtion by prts [], inverse functions [] or even Rolle s theorem []. We wondered if there ws n even deeper reltion between the methods bove nd we hve found tht this is indeed the cse. In prticulr we present here method to compute the volume of solid of revolution s double integrl in very simple wy. Then, we see tht the clssicl methods disks nd shells) re recovered if this double integrl is computed by ech of the two possible pplictions of Fubini s theorem. s further ppliction we lso show how Pppus theorem is obtined from our formul. Prtilly supported by the projects MTM-7-C-, E5 Grupo Consoliddo Geometrí from the goverment of rgón, FQM- from Junt de ndlucí, nd PRI-IBDE--986 cción Integrd hispno-lemn.
The volume s double integrl Let be closed region of the plne OXY nd let e be ny stright line in the sme plne such tht e is exterior to. For every point P = x, y), put d e x, y) = dp, e) the distnce from P to e. Let us denote by V, e) the volume of the solid obtined by rotting the region round the line e, see Figure. e OXY e d Figure : olid of revolution together with the rotting section. We clim tht: V, e) = πd e x, y) d. ) It is not the point here to give complete nd rigorous proof of this clim. The underlying ide is in fct very simple. For every point P x, y), consider tiny circle with center in P nd with re d see the right hnd side of Figure ). When this circle rottes round the xis e it genertes torus of volume πd e x, y)d nd then it is enough to sum up ll these volumes; i.e., to integrte over. Observe tht d e x, y) is lwys polynomil of degree in x nd y, nmely, if the xis e hs eqution x + by + c =, then d e x, y) = x+by+c. +b Deducing the stndrd methods In this section it is shown how the clssicl disk nd shell methods cn be obtined from the double integrl formul presented bove. ssume, without loss of generlity, tht the xis of revolution is OY. Let us first consider norml domin with respect to the x-xis, i.e., the region is bounded by continuous functions y = f x) nd y = f x) between x = nd x = b s in the left-hnd side of Figure. Fubini s
theorem sttes tht the double integrl I = by mens of simple integrls s: b ) f x) I = πx dy dx = f x) b πx d cn be computed ) π f x) f x) dx, which is precisely the well-known formul obtined in the method of shells. ssume now tht is norml domin with respect to the y-xis. In this cse is bounded by continuous functions x = g y) nd x = g y) between y = c nd y = d s in the right-hnd side of Figure. gin, by Fubini, the double integrl I bove cn be solved s: πx d = d c ) g y) πx dx dy = g y) d which is the formul corresponding to the disk method. c π g y) g y) ) dy, OY y = f x) d x = g y) x = g y) y = f x) c b Figure : Norml domins w.r.t. the x- nd the y-xis, resp. This shows tht, lthough both methods might seem very different geometriclly slicing the solid versus decomposing it in cylindricl shells), they re essentilly the sme. This is not surprising nd hs simple interprettion. Using the formul πx d one is dding up the volumes of the tori obtined by rotting circle with center x, y) nd re d bout the y-xis. To sum ll these volumes one cn proceed in two different wys:. Fix y = y nd consider the sum of the volumes of the tori corresponding to the points x, y ), obtining horizontl disk. Then it is enough to sum the volume of these disks. This is exctly the description of the disk method.. Fix x = x nd consider the sum of the volumes of the tori corresponding to the points x, y), obtining verticl cylindricl shell. Then one hs just to sum the volumes of this shells. This is exctly the description of the shell method. Hence the two clssicl methods rise from ours just by crefully rrnging the tori whose volumes hve to be summed.
Pppus theorem Consider region of the plne OXY nd the solid obtined by rotting it round the xis e. If C denotes the centroid of nd is the surfce re of recll the nottion from ection ), then the so-clled Pppus theorem sttes in its clssicl form [5, Chpter 6] tht the volume of this solid is given by V, e) = πdc, e). Let us see how to obtin Pppus theorem from Eqution ). Recll tht if e hs eqution x + by + c =, then d e x, y ) = x +by +c. It is +b lso well-known tht if C = x C, y C ), then: x C = x d, y C = y d. With ll this ingredients, nd since cn be ssumed to lie on the semiplne determined by x + by + c > : x + by + c V, e) = πd e x, y) d = π d = + b = π x C + by C + c + b = πdc, e), where linerity of the integrl hs plyed key role. Pppus theorem dmits n interesting geometricl interprettion. When the region is rotted round e, torus with section is obtined. Then Pppus theorem implies tht the volume of this torus is the sme s tht of cylinder with bse nd height πdc, e). In our cse we hve similr interprettion, but the volume of the originl torus is now the sme s tht of truncted cylinder. Figure illustrtes both situtions. C x C b πx C C π C πb Figure : Pppus theorem & our method. 5 n exmple s shown in ection, the formul for computing the volume of solid of revolution using double integrl gives rise to the disk or shell method
fter pplying Fubini s theorem. This fct could led us to think tht this pproch does not provide in principle ny new dvntge with respect to the clssicl ones. However, in order to solve double integrl, there re mny more techniques t our disposl. The possibility to use specific double integrtion techniques, s for instnce chnge of vribles, is wht gives merit to our method. n illustrtive exmple bsed on chnging to polr coordintes is shown. Let be the plne region bounded by the unit circle x +y = nd the stright lines y = x nd y = x s in Figure. Let us compute, using integrls, the volume of the solid obtined by rotting the region bout the xis OY. OY y = x π π y = x Figure : re of the rotting region bout the y-xis. Using the disk method, the required volume is: V = π y y ) dy + π y y ) dy. ) Using the method of shells, the volume is: V = + πx x + ) x dx + π ) x dx. πx x ) x dx ) Finlly, using our method, the volume is: V = πx d. ) 5
Observe tht the lst expression using double integrls is much simpler nd more compct. pplying Fubini s theorem one recovers the two other expressions nd there would be no rel dvntge in our method. Insted, let us chnge to polr coordintes. Then, V = π ρ dρ π π [ ρ cos θ dθ = π ] [ ] π sin θ π = π + ), nd thus the required volume cn be found in simple wy compred to the expressions ) nd ). 6 Concluding remrks We hve presented wy to compute the volume of solid of revolution s double integrl. This method seems, s fr we know, to be bsent in the literture. In ddition to its intrinsic mthemticl interest, we think tht this method to compute the volume of solid of revolution might be of eductionl interest. pecificlly, some of its dvntges re:. It voids considertions bout the shpe of the solid.. It gives n esy wy to describe the volume of the solid when the xis of revolution is not horizontl neither verticl.. It introduces the use of double integrtion techniques polr coordintes, for instnce) tht, in some cses see the exmple in ection 5 bove), leds to shorter clcultions.. It extends the disk nd shell methods nd lso Pppus theorem in the sense tht ll of them cn esily be recovered from Eqution ). cknowledgments. We would like to thnk Rubén Vigr for his help with Figure.
