4 µn mn kn High Precision Modular Easy to Upgrade What are Various Test Scales Tribometer is an instrument that measures friction, wear, coefficient of friction i.e. tribological properties between two surfaces in contact. Dependent on the load and environmental range it can be categorized into several areas such as: Nano tribometer - tribometer that works at low and ultra low load range. Vacuum tribometer - tribometer that performs testing under vacuum condition. Fretting tester - tribometer that al-lows to perform high speed testing under small oscillatory dis placement. Ultra high torque tribometer - for testing materials, samples that generates ultra high friction. Industrial Tribometer - tribometer that can run tests close to real life scenario. It can simulate real con ditions, mount real components etc. Lubricant Tribometer - tribometer that is specifically designed to run lubricant, greases, anti fric-tion coating etc. Rtec Universal Tribometer This is a multi functional tribometer has interchangeable modules and load cells, that allows it to run several tests on same platform. Rtec Load Cells Rtec manufactures several pat-ented load cells. The tester al-lows to interchange load cells easily. With this concept it can achieve nano, micro, macro tribology ranges and still maintain highest resolution and accuracies associated with each load cell. Load Cell Categories Each of these load cells type are available in nano, micro and macro ranges. Piezo load cell - for highest data acquisition in reciprocating mode. 2 dimension load cell - for ease of use for low and mid range loads. 1 dimension load cell - to de-couple friction and down force sensors. 7 The tester comes with several environmental chambers. The chambers are typically mounted on top of room temperature drives. Using interchangeable chambers a wide range from -120 to l200c, controlled humidity, vacuum up to 10-7 Torr etc. is achieved. Few setup also allows to heat both upper and lower sample separately to simulate real life situations. 1000C 1000C The advanced temperature controller allows to measure temperature at multiple points simultaneously. All the chambers are close loop and the requested conditions are controlled using the software automatically. The PID for different range of chambers are automatically loaded once an option is mounted. -60C 10-7 Torr Vacuum Uniformity -120 to 1200 ( Humidity Vacuum 10-7 Torr 500C 150C Close Loop Humidifier Temperature Controller 1000C
8 Combination of various data channels such as Friction, Displacement, 3D sub-nm Images, Acoustic emission, Electrical Contact Resistance, Temperature, Humidity, Torque etc. allows to get comprehensive data analysis, that in turn allows to come to conclusive answers. - - _j :---- Friction/ Torque Torque, friction, coefficient of friction are recorded and displayed in real time. Acoustic Emission The acoustic emission signal indicates initia tion of failure at the test interface. The sen sor uniquely filters out the motor and ambi ent noise and shows the inter-facial acoustic signal. Down Force Down force is recorded and displayed in real time. This test shows step increase in down force. The force can be controlled in constant, linear or custom mode. ECR Electrical contact resistance sensor measures the surface electi cal properties. Different resis tance range is available from few milli ohms to mega ohms.
9 The Universal Tribometer is ideally suited for Industrial Tribology involving lubricant, additives, oil, metal working fluids etc. The sturdy design, various lubricant dispensing system, speed range from ultra slow to 10,000 RPM, temperature control etc. allows to precisely develop, characterize and do quality control. Few of the common tribology tests and features are described below. Ball/Pin On Disk Reciprocating Test, HFRR Block On Ring Shaft, Ring, Seal Test 4 Ball, Twist Compression, Galling Tapping, Drilling, Cutting Motions 4Ball, Roxena, EP Component Testing Thrust Washer. Lubricant High Speed Containers Temperature Control All Regimes Automatic Stribeck Up to 8000N Force Real Components Low Friction Measurement at High Loads Ultra High Torque Motors Pre Set Programs HFRR The High Frequency Reciprocating module HFRR (ASTM D6079) is used for evaluating diesel fuel lubricity. The ball is caused to rub against the disk with a 1-mm stroke at a frequency of 50 Hz for 75 min Recirculation Linear Oscillating Test The standard Test to determine extreme pressure, friction wear properties of lubricant greases, solid bonded films, gear and hydraulic fluids, lubricating oils. All tests are done in oscillation mode under controlled environmental conditions. ASTM D5706, D5707, D6425, D7217, D7420, D7594,D7421,DIN51834 /2/3/4/5/6/7/8 /9 Block on Ring, Timken EP The block on ring module is typically used to evaluate friction wear of materials, lubricant where a ring/bearing/shaft is rotated under axial load. ASTM G77, D2509, D2714, D2782, D2981, D Ball, EP wear 4 ball module is used to measure friction properties of extreme pressure oils and greases. The test involves rotating one ball on three stationary balls at controlled environmental conditions. ASTM D2596, D2783,D2266, D4172, D5183 Tapping torque, Twist Compression Tapping torque module allows to characterize friction, wear, torque etc. during forming and machining. The test involves tapping/drilling using taps of various standard sizes on materials of choice. Twist Compression is designed to measure friction and adhesion in metal forming. Test involves slowly rotating a ring on top of material of choice. Piston Ring Liner This test allows to assess friction and wear parameters of piston ring, liner material in presence of engine oils. Few applicable standards are AST MG etc. Thrust Washer This test (ASTM 3702) allows to assess friction and wear parameters of self-lubricated materials in thrust washers ASTM3702 etc. Pin, ball on disk The module allows to measure wear, friction during sliding using pin/ball on disk setup. ASTM G 99, DIN Stribeck Curve Stribeck curve is a plot between coefficient of friction and bearing number. In all modules uses can change the load and velocity to automatically plot Stribeck Curves with ease. Stribeck curve
10 Coating, Materials Testing Scratch Scratch test The scratch test is done to calculate adhesion, scratch hardness of coatings. With the advent of new deposition methods and technologies thinner coatings are finding its way in every aspect of our life. Coatings are present on LCD displays, phones, cut ting tools, mems, glass, automobiles, devices etc. The quantita tive coating adhesion scratch test is a simple practical test that has been around for a long time. But reliable, reproducible and comprehensive test requires careful control of the test system configuration and testing parameters. The scratch test requires applying a load on the sample that needs to be tested with a spherical tip or a custom tip. During the process of applying the load the sample is moved at a constant velocity and several parameters such as Friction (Fx), Down force (Fz), Coefficient of friction (COF), displacement (Z), acous tic emission (AE), temperature etc. are measured In situ. nm to mm Thick Coatings High Temperature About tester The scratch module can run both scratch adhesion and scratch hardness test. Each axis X,Y,Z have encoders and are closed looped. The down force is controlled in real time. The tester can be used to scratch coatings from nm to several microns. Its extremely easy to use and can be pre programmed for repetitive test or make custom test for advance analysis. The optical profilometer is optimized for scratch test. The profilometer head can be a white light interferometer and confocal microscope combination. The combination allows to measure steel scratch slopes, trans-parent coatings (glass etc) and measure roughness, volume wear, method of failure etc. with sub nm resolution.

12 Hot Hardness 3-4 Point Bending Dynamic Tensile Software The tester comes with a powerful operation, statistical and image analysis software. All softwares are windows based and are very easy to learn and operate. The software allows to run the tool in advanced mode for experienced users or just push a button mode for new users or operators. The data can be saved in proprietary format or in ASCII format. Mechanical tests The universal tribometer measures and monitors forces and displacement in all axis. This allows is to run several standard mechanical tests such as hardness, bending, tensile, compres sion, fatigue, torsion, creep, fretting etc. test with ease.
