1 Introducing SolidWorks Assemblies SAAST Robotics 2008

2 Assemblies Collection of related parts saved in one SW document file - *.sldasm Contains anywhere from 2 to over 1000 components or sub-assemblies Displays movement between related parts within their degrees of freedom Components are defined in relation to each other using Mates Mates: coincident, concentric, distance, etc.

3 Design Methods Bottom-up Design Create parts, insert them into assembly (assy), and mate as required Preferred when use previously constructed, offthe-shelf parts Component relationships and regeneration are simpler Focus on individual parts Top-down Design Start work in the assy Use geometry of one part To help define other parts To create machined features, added after parts are assembled Can start with layout sketch, define fixed part locations, planes, etc. then design parts referencing these definitions

4 Assemblies Create the following sub-assemblies Each sub-assy document, prior to mating the components need to: Load and anchor first component to assy origin Load the additional components Move, position and constrain the components

5 Mates Mates position the components in assy precisely with respect to each other Positioning defines how components move and rotate wrt each other Create geometric relations coincident, perpendicular, tangent, etc. Each mate is valid for specific combinations of geometry such as cones, cylinders, planes, extrusions, etc.

6 Mates Faucet sub-assy Open components to go into sub-assy Open new assy document

7 Mates Load first assy component Start with component that doesn t move wrt to others Fix this component to assy origin Select component name in FeatureManager design tree in.sldprt doc and drag into.sldasm doc Use pointer feedback to position it on origin of.sldasm doc

8 Mates Load additional components Select component in FeatureManager design tree of.sldprt doc Drag in graphics area of.sldasm doc Drag in two instances of handle Position additional components Use Move component tool to drag closer to anchored component Leave some space btw/ them to view relevant component areas

9 Mates CoinMate tool select bottom face of handle and top face coincident Mate of spigot Can still slide handle anywhere along top face of faucet with Move Component tool Requires second mate to further define position

10 Mates Concentric Mate Select cylindrical face on the faucet handle Select cylindrical face of the faucet stem Apply concentric mate Now, can t move handle off top face of spigot but can rotate it along its axis

11 Mates Alternate Design Approach SmartMates Automatic mates created by SW based on entity you use to drag component By dragging components into assy s, geometry of existing components is inferenced to create mates as you drop in new components Types of SmartMates geometry-based, feature based, pattern based

12 Assemblies Door sub-assy Drag in 5 components door, moldings - short (2), moldings long (2) Coincident Mates, Parallel Mates

13 In-Context Design Create or edit components in assy window Can reference geometry of one component to create/ modify another component Ensures that components fit together correctly SW adds sketches and features to FeatureManager design tree as if creating part in own part doc Lists info about what was used to create it and referenced assy component

14 In-Context Design Create an assy component in-context Diameter of supply pipe depends on diameter of faucet stem Create supply pipe component in assy so can reference geometry of stem Use Convert Entities and Offset Entities sketch tools If size of stem changes, size of supply pipe changes

15 In-Context Design Modify a part in-context of an Assy Positions of holes in back of cabinet depend on length of other components Edit cabinet component so can reference geometry of pipes Use Offset Entities tool to reference geometry of pipes for sketch of the cut in cabinet Position and size of holes change if change position and size of pipes

16 Examine the Assembly SW has various assembly tools to display, test, and measure assembly components after mates are applied Show and hide components Explode assy Detect collisions between components

17 Examine the Assembly Show and hide components Hiding helps component selection when adding mates or creating in-context parts Right-click on component name in FeatureManager design tree and select Hide/Show component

18 Examine the Assembly Mass Properties Interference Detection Faucet-Handle U-joint

19 Examine the Assembly Detect collisions between components Used when move or rotate a component Detect collisions with entire assy or selected group of mated components Use Stop as Collision option to determine where components collide

20 Examine the Assembly Physical Dynamics and Simulations

21 Examine the Assembly Explode the assy Separates the components to facilitate viewing Options: Which components to include What distances to use Which direction to display Exploded view is saved with a configuration of the assy or subassy

22 Examine the Assembly SolidWorks Animator Animate and capture SW assemblies in motion Generates.avi files Fly-around animation Exploded view animation Collapsed view animation Can explicitly create motion paths for selected components
