Note to teachers: One of this week s marimba activities requires using computers with Macromedia Flash Player installed. We have also included an activity based around child labour in the tobacco industry that may require support from teachers depending on students literacy levels. This activity deals with a very serious issue that some may deem inappropriate for the classroom. We included it as a different approach to the standard anti-smoking messages students are exposed to. Teachers should use their own judgment about whether this activity is appropriate for their students. As always, we are looking for feedback from teachers to ensure that these notes are providing genuine learning opportunities for students. We would also love input from teachers. 2 ACTIVITIES TO DO ON YOUR OWN (OR WITH A FRIEND!) MARIMBA! The students from Yirara have done a lot of work with Marimbas. Last year they built four of their own marimbas! And this year they will be travelling to Tasmania to play at the Marimba Mania Festival with hundreds of other students from Tasmania and Victoria. Read the information about Marimbas carefully and answer the questions below in your own words. Marimba The marimba is a musical instrument in the percussion family. A percussion instrument is any instrument that makes a sound when it is hit, shaken, or scraped. Marimbas are similar to xylophones. Both instruments have wooden bars but the xylophone has a different pitch and makes a higher sound. Xylophones are played with hard wooden or plastic mallets. Marimbas are played with soft mallets. Everyone knows how bad smoking is but people still do it, even kids. Smoking is not just bad for your health, it s bad in other ways that you might not have realised. Read the paragraph about smoking below and discuss it with your class: Cigarettes are made from a plant called tobacco. A lot of the tobacco in the world is grown in very poor countries such as Malawi in Africa. The tobacco produced in these countries is grown by children from communities just like you, some as young as 5 years old. These children often don t go to school because they work on tobacco farms. Some children are paid around $0.01 a day, while others are not paid anything at all. Not only are their work conditions very bad, these children often get sick from their work because tobacco is a poisonous plant and even touching it can be bad for you. Almost every cigarette you smoke is made from tobacco from Malawi or other poor countries, which means every cigarette you smoke could be hurting a child from a community just like you. You might make a poster, a brochure, a short film or an advertisement. This is a big task so you may want to work in groups or even as a whole class. Think carefully about how you will get your message across. It is very easy to say don t smoke but you need to tell people why they shouldn t smoke. Eg.
