4 Information The history of labelling Since the requirement for labelling electrical components and wiring began, there has been a continuous and changing demand for costeffective, time-saving and flexible methods of manufacture (while systems have become more and more complex), challenging the makers of labelling systems to keep coming up with new and innovative ideas. Some years ago Murrplastik Systemtechnik GmbH developed a fast and simple labelling system for identifying machines and components. The labelling system is based on pre-printed ident inserts (with individual letters, numbers and symbols) and various sleeves and holders into which the idents can be inserted. With this method of labelling few components are required to achieve rapid, clean and durable results. The secret of the low component requirement lies with the invariable typeface on pre-printed label lettering for which a large number of different holders has been created. aided labelling software and hardware. The advent of this new software and hardware brought the added speed and flexibility of being able to make labels on site as and when required.

Over the last few years user software has taken on a different complexion. User software has evolved to include various options such as engraving, printing, lasering and plotting. Connections to superordinate CAD/CAE systems facilitate fault-free data transfer to output devices. The constant addition of labelling materials makes it easier to meet modern-day labelling requirements. To sum up, the original handwritten (barely legible) label has evolved into a universal labelling system designed to meet all labelling requirements and to enable us to achieve our objective of saving you time. 8 Software Labelling everything with one software package Labelling is intended to aid manmachine communication through the use of colours, numbers, symbols or plain text, and to facilitate safe handling of machinery. The universal labelling software ACS 2000 Professional is a fast and straighforward means of generating text, numbers, graphics or symbols in-house and printing them on neutral label holders. It is supplied with a symbol database containing standardised symbols used in electrics, mechanics, hydraulics and pneumatics. Other symbols of your choice can be added to the database using the editing function. A CAD interface module connects the application to the E-CAE or to other planning systems, allowing rapid and accurate data transfer of function texts, wiring diagrams, terminal block or operating resource lists and machine schedules. A CAD interface generator allows the user to customise individual interfaces to the application programs. Auxiliary tools enable data to be freely assigned to the labelling materials required. A flexible flatbed plotter completes the labelling package for passive safety technology. The flatbed system has a high labelling capacity and is capable of holding and processing up to 2400 wire labelling plates at any one time. The airtight pen station prevents the pens from drying out when in use. The pens can be stored in the system. The label start aid ensures that the labelling is correct and perfect from the very first plate. Meeting the standard European Standard EN 60204 (VDE 0113 Part 1)...... specifies that wires, components and terminal blocks must be clearly identified in the control cabinet.

The Murrplastik labelling system can be used to label single wires, terminal blocks, control gears, equipment locations, push-buttons and signal lamps, and components of all different makes.

10 Meeting the standard European Standard EN (VDE 0113 Part 1) specifies that wires, components and terminal blocks must be clearly identified in the control cabinet. This identification must remain permanently legible. The labelling systems supplied by Murrplastik meet all these requirements. The Murrplastik labelling system can be used to label single wires, terminal blocks, control gears, equipment locations, push-buttons and signal lamps, and components of all different makes. The labelling can be done manually using the Ademark system; alternatively the computeraided ACS system can be used. Data transfer routines for CAD/CAE packets support the project-specific transfer of labelling information. 178 Labelling and fitting service Many companies are ill-equipped when it comes to correct and cost-effective labelling of cables in control cabinets and elsewhere. We are all familiar, whether from the home or the office, with the maze of cables entangled behind and under the PC because so many peripheral devices have to be connected to the central unit - from the printer to the scanner and the speakers to the USB connection. The cables are labelled in precious few cases, resulting in confusion when changes or modifications are to be made. Such negligence is unthinkable in industry. That s why there are precise regulations specifying how the individual cables, conduits and tubes are to be labelled in wiring harnesses or looms. After all, it is both desirable and imperative for the technician to know immediately what is in the control cabinet, railway carriage or behind the panelling in the aircraft. In the majority of cases such regulations do not merely state that labelling is mandatory but they also specify the precise nature of the labelling. Indeed, it can differ greatly in terms of inscription method, typefaces and base material. Another factor to consider is that the labelling plates often have to be produced in bulk. 184 Material properties Comparative properties of polycarbonate and polyamide label plates For your label plates Murrplastik Systemtechnik uses high-quality polycarbonate meeting the requirements laid down by UL94 for the top fire classification V0. This offers clear advantages over polyamide as used by our competitors. Polycarbonate (PC) is used in applications requiring a high-quality surface finish in respect of scratch resistance and gloss level. As such, PC is widespread in the automotive sector, where examples of its use include headlight lenses and PC/ABS blends in the interior. By contrast, polyamide (PA) is rarely found as a blend in interior fittings. Polyamides are, however, prevalent under the bonnet, for example, where less significance is attached to the appearance. For use as a label plate polyamide has another unfavourable property: ambient water absorption of approx. two weight percent. This can cause dimensional variations (small dimensions at low temperatures and low air humidity, large dimensions at high temperatures and high air humidity). While this may not affect the dimensions of the label plates too severely, it does unduly impact on the properties of the material. Indeed, if water absorption is low the material is very brittle and tends to break (e.g. when latching onto a terminal block). Conversely, if water absorption is high then it is very soft and it may be difficult to separate plates from each other (tear response). In terms of its inscription properties polycarbonate is streets ahead of polyamide. Since PC is more prone to chemical reaction it lends itself well to ink and also laser inscription. Whereas PA scarcely reacts to the energy application of laser light the colour change achieved with PC is outstanding. The chemical reactivity of polycarbonate during inscription makes it an excellent abrasion-resistant surface for inks. If the resistance to abrasion and water is good in both materials then the inscription on polyamide wears off significantly if comes into contact with oil, petrol or spirit. Polycarbonate, however, is also resistant to these substances. Material description Material Polycarbonate (PC): Polyamide (PA): Polyvinyl chloride (PVC): Thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU) : Description Excellent surface gloss and transparency (natural), high mechanical strength and dimensional stability under heat, outstanding electrical and dielectric properties, superb dimensional accuracy and low water absorption. Impact resistance up to approx. 150 C and, as a general rule, PC is self-extinguishing without the addition of fire-retardants. Broad range of properties covered by different types (PA 6 and PA6.6 are frequently used). Generally good electrical and mechanical properties with resistance to impact and abrasion being particularly strong. When dry, PA is sensitive to impact. Water absorption renders PA flexible. Soft PVC is made from polyvinyl chloride, softeners and process materials, e.g. stabilisers and lubricants. PVC is resistant to corrosive saline solutions and most acids.
