Chapter 1 - Introduction 1 Introduction The Spirent Datum system provides device-based data testing, including configurable test scenarios and local and centralized results analysis.

3 Chapter 1 - Introduction 1 Introduction The Spirent Datum system provides device-based data testing, including configurable test scenarios and local and centralized results analysis. This guide is intended for all users of the Datum Mobile client for iphone. The Datum system consists of a device-based test client, a hosted test server and a central management database that stores project configurations and test results. Figure Datum Mobile System Architecture Prior to running the mobile test, some configuration is required in the Datum Base web client. Use the Datum Base User and Administration Guide as the primary resource for this process. Use this Spirent Datum Mobile Client Guide as the reference for working with the Datum Mobile for iphone client. This document uses a step-by-step approach to address the device-based portions of the Datum Mobile test process: Install the Mobile Client Configure the Mobile Client Run the Mobile Test Review Results on the Test Device Copyright 2013 Spirent Communications 3

4 Chapter 2 Install the Mobile Client 2 Install the Mobile Client The Datum Mobile Client application must be installed on the test device. There are three deployment options offered by Apple for iphone application distribution: App Store Distribution o This is the default deployment model for Datum Mobile for iphone and is described in Section 2.1 below. Ad-Hoc Distribution o This deployment model may be used in some cases and is described in Section 2.2 below. Enterprise Distribution o This deployment model requires the collaboration of Spirent and the customer s IT department to push the application to end users through an internal App Server. Please contact Spirent Support for more details on this deployment model. Please be aware that Datum Mobile for iphone can only be used on iphone devices running OS 2.0 or higher. iphones with prior versions of the OS do not support the installation of 3rd party applications. 2.1 App Store Installation To begin, in the App Store, search for Datum. 6 Chapter 2 Install the Mobile Client 2.2 Ad-Hoc Installation The ad-hoc deployment model may be recommended by Spirent in some cases. Spirent requires the iphone Device ID in order to create the ad-hoc installation files. Follow these steps to obtain the Device ID: Open itunes and connect the iphone. Select the connected device from the DEVICES menu. Click the Serial Number field. It will change to Identifier. Paste the Identifier into the body of an message with subject iphone Device ID for Datum Mobile. Send the to support@spirent.com. Copyright 2013 Spirent Communications 6

7 Chapter 2 Install the Mobile Client A Spirent Support Engineer will use your iphone Device ID to create a custom Datum Mobile installation package. The installation files will be sent in a return consisting of a mobile provisioning file and an *.ipa file. Once you have received the files: Drag the provisioning file into the LIBRARY area in the top left corner of the itunes screen. Drag the *.ipa file into the LIBRARY area in the top left corner of the itunes screen. Sync the device. Figure LIBRARY Area of itunes The Datum program will appear on the iphone. Figure Datum Mobile on the iphone If the Datum program does not appear on the iphone after syncing, select the Applications tab in itunes and confirm that the Datum application is selected for syncing. to activate a new user account. Note: The Start Test option on this screen initiates a preconfigured test sequence that posts results to a central community-sourced database.

9 Chapter 3 Configure the Mobile Client 3 Configure the Mobile Client Launch the Datum application on the iphone. Prior to testing it is necessary to: Activate the Installation Associate the Device with a DatumBase Project 3.1 Activate the Installation When the Tests screen appears, select Click Here under Login? to activate a new user account. Note: The Start Test option on this screen initiates a preconfigured test sequence that posts results to a central community-sourced database. This option provides a good demonstration of a Datum test in progress. In order to run customized test sequences and post results to a project repository of choice, an activation code is required. If the Device ID matches more than one IMEI configured in the Handset Performance Database, the Select a Project screen will appear. Select the desired project to associate with for this test.

10 Chapter 3 Configure the Mobile Client 3.2 Associate the Device with a DatumBase Project Before running a test, the test device s ID (typically IMEI) must be associated with at least one project in DatumBase. If the Device ID matches more than one IMEI configured in the Handset Performance Database, the Select a Project screen will appear. Select the desired project to associate with for this test. The project provides the Test Set and other configuration settings to be used, and serves as the repository for test results. Figure 3-3 Select A Project Screen If the Device ID matches exactly one IMEI configured in the Handset Performance Database, the project details will appear on the Settings screen. Figure 3-4 Project Details on Settings Screen If the Device ID does not match any configured in DatumBase, add a handset to a new or existing DatumBase project containing the device s IMEI as displayed in the Configuration area. If you wish, you could make up a unique number to use in both places, or use another identifier like the phone number. Return to the Tests screen after selecting the project. Figure Select Test Set Menu In the event that Datum lacks an internet connection and cannot successfully connect to the configuration server, it is possible to run the test with the last Test Set used. In this event, you will be asked whether you wish to use the cached Test Set. Figure Use cached test set? Prompt From the Select Number of Cycles menu, select the number of times to repeat the Test Set. The default value is the number of repeats specified in the Test Set. In the Description area, enter descriptive text to describe the current test (i.e. location, conditions, etc.) if desired.

Disable this option if unneeded to prevent this data from taking up too much local storage on the device. In the Description area, enter descriptive text to describe the current test (i.e. location, conditions, etc.) if desired. The text entered here can be used to filter results in DatumBase. Results are uploaded to DatumBase at the end of each cycle. A cycle refers to one iteration of each test in the Test Set.

Tests can be stopped at any time by selecting the Cancel button. An individual task may be skipped by selecting the Skip Task button. Results are uploaded to DatumBase at the end of each cycle. A cycle refers to one iteration of each test in the Test Set. If the results cannot be uploaded, they will be stored on the device, assuming the device has sufficient storage space.
