See example below of what your username and password may look like: USERNAME: BTHub3-KRXZ PASSWORD: ZRt45nW35 Tap on Connect which will show a connected status. If this does not work, please try again. If it continues not to work, it is fine, as your diary will work using the data usage allowance already on your phone. 3

PLEASE NOTE: If 24 hour clock is being used - 7am is 07:00 and 7pm will be 19:00. Depending on the phone signal/connection allow approx. 5 minutes for the diary to download correctly. You should see the message Downloading Surveys and TouchPoints is currently downloading new surveys When the download is complete, the screen will show as Your first diary entry will be <day of week><12.00am 12.30am (Day 1 of 7). Your diary will start for you the following day! The first time slot to fill in will be the one starting at midnight. 4

5 5 MAIN MENU You may access the main menu screen within the app by tapping the top left corner. Home: this will take you to the home screen. FAQs: refer to these if any questions. Tap on the questions and answers will appear underneath. Settings: this will allow times for daily reminders to be adjusted. Help: please ignore this section. If you need help, please contact us on the helpline from your own phone. About: this contains the Terms and Conditions / Privacy Policy for you to access and read. 6 PRACTICE DIARY Do practise the diary before starting, to give an accurate feel for completing your entries the day after. On the TouchPoints home screen select Continue in the box stating TouchPoints study. Select Practice which will take you into a practice diary. Select the Practice button at the bottom of the screen, to take you to the next screen. PLEASE NOTE: Select at least one option to move on from that screen. Tap on the option box to make a selection; and a tick sign will be visible on the right side. Once the practice and real diary start, each 30 minutes time slot of the day will be located at the top of the screen. Some lists are longer depending on screen size and will be indicated with an arrow sign. Scroll down to see the full list. 5

6 7 THE DIARY The first time slot in your diary will be midnight to half past midnight. If you are asleep until, for example 7.00am, you will be able to fill in your sleep as a single block of time after you wake up. Your diary is split into 30 minute timeslots over a 7 day period. If, fully up to date, your status screen will show No outstanding entries, until your next time slot. When there is at least one entry to fill in, the screen will say Diary Entries to Complete. The message Unable to Upload Data means that the diary is being filled offline, i.e. there is no signal/connection. The entries will be submitted the next time your phone connects. WHAT QUESTIONS WILL I BE ASKED? 1) Recording location Select one option and choose the location you were in for the majority of the 30 minutes. 2) Recording Sleep Enter the time you slept until in your entry by adjusting the time on the clock and selecting Next to continue. If recording sleep for long periods (e.g. more than 12 hours) /call to inform us as a diary with too much sleep may be rejected and not eligible for shopping vouchers. Select the time very carefully to be sure you do not mix up morning and evening times. If for example you select the time as 10:00 be sure to check if that is 10AM in the morning or 10PM in the evening. 3) Recording Activities Every time slot will have identical questions to understand what you have been doing and to track differences. Ensure you select ALL the activities you have been doing during each time slot. If you are travelling, you will still be asked about the activities you are doing. 4) Recording Mood During each time slot, you will be asked about how you were feeling using a scale. Please move the indicator arrow along the scale. If your mood remains unchanged, move the indicator along the scale and then back again to progress to the next screen. Another question will be asked to get a deeper understanding about feelings during the time slot. Please select as many pictures to describe your feelings. Select None of these if the pictures do not match your mood. 6

7 8 DIARY COMPLETION You will have completed your diary after 7 full days (up until midnight) and it will finish when you fill in what time you slept until on the morning of day 8. PLEASE NOTE: If you fall behind, check carefully, the time and day the next time slot is referring to, particularly whether it is morning or evening. Diary entries are transmitted back in real time, so, as long as there is a Wi-Fi connection or you have signal/data, when your last time slot is complete and submitted, the screen will show as Diary Complete. Wait for a few minutes for the Diary Complete screen to appear if it does not show up immediately (a short delay may occur depending on your internet connection/signal). Alternatively, keep selecting / located on the top right until you see the Diary Complete screen. You can ignore the message on the screen shown on the left. As soon as you see this screen, you can switch the phone off and send it back to us If there are further questions, refer to the Frequently Asked Questions section. Please contact us on the helpline or by for any questions not answered in these instructions. 9 SEPARATE QUESTIONNAIRE Please complete the separate questionnaire. It is a different survey to the TouchPoints diary being completed on the phone. Please complete the questionnaire within 2 weeks of starting the diary. It is designed to provide a complete picture of how participants spend their time, which covers television, radio, newspapers, magazines, travel, internet and mobile phone usage, shopping and a range of other topics. It is a long questionnaire split into sections so that each section is completed at a convenient time over the course of the week. You will have a paper version of the questionnaire if you have told us that you do not use the internet or do not have a computer/tablet. If you provided an address, you can access the questionnaire online by clicking on the link sent to you. In the online version, each section should take approx minutes to complete. You may keep coming back to it at any time during the week by clicking on the link. IMPORTANT: The online survey is not suitable for completion on a phone. Click on the Submit button when all sections are completed to allow for answers to be sent to us. PLEASE NOTE: You are welcome to complete the questionnaire when you have successfully started your diary. We will only send your shopping vouchers once both the diary and questionnaire are completed. 7

8 10 COMPLETION AND RETURN Before sending everything back, ensure you have the Diary Complete screen appearing. You may see a message asking you not to delete the diary app. You can ignore this. Please do post the phone and charger back to us in the box as soon as possible after you see the Diary Complete screen. IMPORTANT: Please return everything immediately after completion to ensure you receive your shopping vouchers. Please follow instructions below: If completing the paper questionnaire, post this back to us using the provided prepaid return envelope. If completing the online version, select the submit button. Take the charger apart and place the charger plug and lead into the allocated space in the phone box. (If misplaced/lost the box, please contact the helpline asap). Switch the phone off, ensure the case is still on and place back into the box. (Hold down the button at the top/right side of the phone for 3 seconds. Tap Power Off followed by OK. The screen will go black when the phone turns off). Close the box and place inside the provided prepaid return envelope. (If misplaced/lost, please contact the helpline asap). Post this back to us. The label on the return envelope is Royal Mail s tracked service. This means the pack will reach us safely within 48 hours of you posting it. You can post it in an ordinary postbox or can take it to the post office and ask for proof of posting. Either way, no cost is incurred. Once verified that you have completed both the diary and the questionnaire, we will send out your shopping voucher either by or post as a thank you within the following 2-3 weeks. THANK YOU! Thank you for taking the time to read these instructions. If there are further questions, refer to the Frequently Asked Questions section. Please contact us on the helpline number or by (provided at the bottom of each page) for any questions not answered in these instructions. 8

9 FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS PACK & PHONE QUESTIONS What should I do when I first receive the pack (box)? The box will arrive in a plastic wallet by tracked Royal Mail postage. When we spoke to you on the phone, you may have mentioned a safe place for the pack to be delivered. Firstly, check that you have received everything in the pack. This will contain the phone inside a protective case, charger plug and cable. All of these will be securely placed in foam. There will also be a plastic wallet inside which will have a prepaid tracked label on it for you to return everything to us. Please keep all of these safe so you can return everything to us. To get started straight away, charge the phone using the charger provided. You will need to connect the charger plug and cable together. Simply plug it into a wall socket and place the other end into the charger socket of the phone, located at the bottom of the phone underneath. (Please refer to diagram on page 2 if unsure). After 2-3 hours of charge, switch on the phone using the button located at the top (or right hand side). Hold down for 3-4 seconds and it will switch on. Use these instructions to get started. Please start from page 2. Our chargers have been PAT tested to ensure they are safe before being posted to you. We do advise you not to leave the phone or charger plugged in for longer than 3 hours when away from home. What do I do if anything is missing from the pack? If anything is missing, please contact our helpline asap. What are the labels on the phone for? These are only used to monitor which phones have been returned so we can send you your vouchers and track response levels. Please do not peel these off. My phone is not charging / my charger doesn t work? If the phone doesn t seem to be charging, you may have a faulty charger. Please us or call the helpline for assistance. My phone won t switch ON Make sure you are pressing the correct button. The small ON button is located on the top or right hand side of the phone dependent on the model of the phone. Press this button down for 3-4 seconds to switch it on. If this doesn t work, please charge the phone fully and then try the on button again. If your phone doesn t turn on after a prolonged period of charging, or it doesn t work for any other reason, please contact us How do I know when the battery is running low on the phone? There is a percentage indicator on the phone screen so that you can see when the battery is running low. If this gets below 40%, please charge the phone. Why are there two parts to the charger? The charger was sent in two parts to fit in with the packaging / box. The charge plug should be placed into the wall socket and the charger lead will need to be connected to the plug and the smaller end will need to go into the phone to charge it What shall I do if I have lost the pack the phone and charger came in? If you have lost either the pack or prepaid return envelope, or anything else, please contact us asap. 9

10 FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS TOUCHPOINTS DIARY APP Do you need me to connect the phone to my home Wi-Fi? If you have a Wi-Fi connection at home and would like to use it then please feel free to connect to it. If you cannot connect to Wi-Fi, the phone has a small data usage allowance to allow your diary timeslots to be downloaded and your data sent back to us. What questions are included for each half an hour timeslot? For each half an hour timeslot, brief questions are asked to establish where you were, who you were with, what you were doing and how you were feeling at the time. We will also ask you questions about your different media usage and what platforms you use to view these. The questions are the same for each 30 minute interval. For the purpose of the TouchPoints study, we need you to answer the same short simple questions for each 30 minute period that you are awake over the course of 7 days. The half hour questions are purposely worded identically in order to track differences that might occur from time to time throughout the day. Once you are familiar with the timeslots, they can be accurately completed in a couple of minutes or less. What answers should I select for each question? For most questions, you should click as many items as applied at any time during that half hour. It is not unusual to have multiple items checked for many of the questions. Do I have to fill it in every half an hour? You don t literally have to access the diary in every half an hour but at some point you will need to catch up if you fall behind by a few hours. Times when you are sleeping can be recorded in blocks rather than half hour by half hour. How do I move on to the next screen within a timeslot? You should see a 'Next' button to select or touch in order to move on to the next screen. This will be located at the bottom of the screen (on the right side) Tap on the 'Next' button to go to the next screen. Please make sure you have something selected on that screen before proceeding, otherwise it will not let you move to the next screen. I have fallen behind on my diary entries. It is not a problem if you fall behind by a few hours as long as you are able to catch up the time slots you missed. Simply enter them all in one go. The time for each slot, will show at the top of the diary screen. Please try not to fall too far behind. If you are not able to catch up the time slots that you have missed then please contact us using the details below so we can tell you how to restart the diary the following day. How do I know when I am finished? After completing your entries up to midnight on the seventh day, a message will appear on screen to notify you that the diary has been completed. At this point please turn the phone off by holding down the button located at the top (or right hand side) of the phone for 3-4 seconds. Then tap on Power Off and tap ok to shut down the phone. Post it with the charger and lead in the same box it arrived in, and placing the box in the plastic wallet that has our address on it. You can put it into an ordinary postbox or, if you prefer and have the time, you can take it to a post office and get a proof of postage note. In either case, it won t cost you anything and the package will be tracked by Royal Mail. SEPARATE QUESTIONNAIRE PAPER VERSION What are the serial numbers on the paper questionnaire? If we have sent you a paper version of the separate questionnaire, the serial numbers are only used to monitor which questionnaires have been returned, so that we can send you your vouchers and monitor response levels. Please do not peel these off. If you are completing the separate questionnaire online, please check your inbox (if you gave us an address). What if I have lost my prepaid return envelope for the paper questionnaire? If you have lost or misplaced the return pre-paid envelope, please contact us. 10

No. We need the answers on the diary and questionnaire to reflect those of the person who agreed to take part up front to ensure a representative sample of the population of Great Britain. When will I get my shopping vouchers? The vouchers will be sent to you by or post after we have verified your diary is complete and received and verified your completed separate questionnaire. Please allow 2-3 weeks after you have completed both the diary and separate questionnaire to receive them. Will my answers be treated in confidence? Yes.
