1 Daylight Saving Time and the BlackBerry Enterprise Solution webcast Originally posted: March 2009 Summary This document provides questions and answers from the webcast entitled Daylight Saving Time and the BlackBerry Enterprise Solution delivered on 18 February Questions and Answers Question: Do you need to distribute the DST 2007 patch to BlackBerry smartphones that have BlackBerry Device Software version or higher? Answer: No, BlackBerry Device Software and higher has the new DST table to support the new transition times, so no action is required. Question: When you use the BlackBerry Desktop Manager to load the DST patch, is there a single patch for all BlackBerry smartphones or does the DST patch differ between models and wireless service providers? Answer: There are different versions of the DST patch available. The version of DST patch is related to the version of BlackBerry Device Software and not the BlackBerry smartphone model. For information on which versions of BlackBerry Device Software have an available DST patch, visit Question: Do some BlackBerry smartphones already have the DST 2007 patch installed? Is there a way to test if this is the case? Answer: The DST 2007 Query tool can be run against the BlackBerry Configuration Database to determine which BlackBerry smartphones have the DST 2007 patch installed, patched or need to install it. The DST 2007 Query tool generates output in.csv format that can be opened and sorted in common spreadsheet applications. 2 Question: Our organization uses BlackBerry Enterprise Server for Microsoft Exchange version and our BlackBerry smartphones are running BlackBerry Device Software version 4.2. We are currently pushing the DST 2007 patch from several years ago, as a policy. Do we need to continue this with new version? Answer: Once the framework has been implemented, the introduction of new BlackBerry smartphones into the environment is greatly simplified. BlackBerry smartphones should function without issue unless BlackBerry smartphone users are being added to the BlackBerry Enterprise Server with a BlackBerry smartphone that is running earlier software and does not have the DST patch installed. Question: We performed the DST update in place last year, do we need to re-apply it? Answer: If the core steps for addressing the DST update have been taken in customer environments, there is no need to repeat those steps. The only additional measure that needs to be taken is the addition of any new time zone information into the BlackBerry Configuration Database. Question: Is there a separate DST update procedure for the Novell GroupWise environment? Answer: Most steps for addressing DST changes are the same across platforms, however at the mail Server (and mail Server binaries) level, each vendor has released specific updates. BlackBerry Enterprise Server for Novell GroupWise administrators must apply the new DST rules to the GroupWise time zone definitions maintained by Novell ConsoleOne. For more information about the BlackBerry Enterprise Server for Novell GroupWise, visit groupwise/ Question: Since the changes to DST have been set, why has Research In Motion not integrated this into the latest build so the update or distribution is no longer needed? Answer: DST rules are set by individual countries and regions and changes are relatively common. For example, the United States and Canada changed their rules in 2007 while Argentina, Brazil, Chile, and Egypt changed their rules in Further changes and updates could happen in the future so ongoing updates may be required. RIM took the opportunity to update the software during the transition to the new DST rules introduced by the United States and Canada in The additional processes outlined during the webcast are applicable to environments where users are not running the latest updates to their BlackBerry Enterprise Server software or BlackBerry smartphones. 3 Question: We have BlackBerry smartphones that are running BlackBerry Device Software version Is there an existing DST patch for this version? Answer: Yes, there is an available DST patch for BlackBerry Device Software version The following table outlines the available versions of the patch: Application Version Platform Version For information on which versions of BlackBerry Device Software have a DST patch, visit Question: Where can we get new DST rules to install on the BlackBerry Enterprise Server? Once we install the newest DST changes, will they be pushed to our BlackBerry smartphones automatically? Answer: As new updates are required, they will be posted on BlackBerry smartphones that are running BlackBerry Device Software version 4.2 or have the DST2007 patch installed, are able to synchronize the new DST rules (that are added to the BlackBerry Configuration Database) to the BlackBerry smartphones automatically. Question: What version of the Collaboration Data Object (CDO) will be able to accommodate the DST2007 patch? Answer: The version of the CDO required to accommodate the DST is dependent upon the version of Microsoft Exchange Server in your environment. The Microsoft Exchange Server 2003 DST update for CDO (provided by Microsoft) is available on the Microsoft web site. 4 Question: Our organization has two BlackBerry Enterprise Server instances. One is used to build the DST software configuration. Can the software configuration from one be applied to the other BlackBerry Enterprise Server? Answer: Yes, the existing software configuration is stored in two specific tables in the BlackBerry Configuration Database (HandheldAppControlPolicy, HandheldConfig). Provided that a single BlackBerry Configuration Database is being used, this allows the instances of BlackBerry Manager and the BlackBerry Policy Service on multiple computers to reference one location to determine which software configurations are available. Question: Can the various DST updates be applied now, even though the initial DST change was implemented in 2007? Answer: Yes. If no DST related updates have been performed in the environment, the steps outlined during the DST webcast (and on can be applied. Question: If our organization s BlackBerry smartphones display DST 2007 patch applied, is there anything more to do on the BlackBerry smartphone user side? Answer: No, if the BlackBerry smartphone indicates that it is patched, there is nothing more for the BlackBerry smartphone user to do. Question: Is a web server required to deploy.jad files for DST updates? Answer: No, a web server is only required if administrators want BlackBerry smartphone users to pull the DST Patch Manager to their BlackBerry smartphones rather than have the updates pushed out using the BlackBerry Enterprise Server Application Push. Question: Are there any subsequent DST rule changes anticipated? Answer: RIM is not aware of any DST updates in the immediate future. RIM remains prepared to address future DST changes on a change-by-change basis, provided that there is also adequate notice of the required change. Question: How can you update BlackBerry Device Software that does not meet the DST rule system requirements? Answer: Updates are not currently available for BlackBerry smartphones running BlackBerry Device Software versions earlier than 4.0. Where possible, update the BlackBerry smartphone to BlackBerry Device Software version 4.0 or higher. Otherwise, the time must be adjusted manually on the BlackBerry smartphone Research In Motion Limited v1.00

5 Question: Can you confirm when DST begins in 2009? Answer: DST begins on different dates for different countries and regions. In 2009, the United States and Canada began DST on Sunday, 8 March at 2:00 AM. Question: What is the most recent version of the DST2007Query tool? Answer: There have been no updates to the DST2007Query tool since version To download the most recent version of the DST2007Query tool, visit Question: Does each new BlackBerry smartphone that is added to a BlackBerry Enterprise Server need to have the DST patch applied on it? Answer: BlackBerry smartphones running BlackBerry Device Software or later already have the newest DST table and rules integrated. There is no need to patch these BlackBerry smartphones. When adding a new BlackBerry smartphone to the BlackBerry Enterprise Server, check the version of the BlackBerry Device Software to determine if any additional action is required. Question: There is an issue where the BlackBerry Enterprise Server for Microsoft Exchange does not automatically update DST for the Brazilian time zone. What resolution do you recommend for this? Answer: The resolution for this is available in BlackBerry Technical Solution Center. Answer: BlackBerry Enterprise Server releases within the same code line are designed to be cumulative, so any changes from a previous release build of the software should be carried over to subsequent release builds. It is important to note that there were no changes made to the BlackBerry Enterprise Server directly. The vendor binaries that are leveraged to communicate with the various messaging systems require the updates, as well as the BlackBerry Configuration Database and the host Windows operating systems. v Research In Motion Limited 5

6 Question: If the DST 2007 patch was applied last year and the updates were pushed to all of BlackBerry smartphones in our organization, are there any DST rules that need to be updated this year? Answer: The most recent list of DST rule changes are available in the BlackBerry Technical Solution Center. Answer: Yes. All BlackBerry smartphones running BlackBerry Device Software version and later have the updated DST framework. v Research In Motion Limited 7

8 Question: Are any DST updates required on a Microsoft Exchange Server 2007? Answer: According to the Microsoft Technet web page there should be no updates required for Microsoft Exchange Server These updates do not replace the updates to BlackBerry smartphones as described in the webcast and this document. For more information, visit the Microsoft support website and search for an article titled Exchange Server and Daylight Saving Time (DST) Question: What will the BlackBerry smartphone users see when the BlackBerry smartphone is updating or is it automatic? Answer: If the DST Patch Manager has been pushed from the BlackBerry Enterprise Server to the BlackBerry smartphone, the BlackBerry smartphone users will observe a brief hourglass during the installation and will be prompted to reset the BlackBerry smartphone. They have three opportunities to delay the reset of the BlackBerry smartphone before it is forced on the fourth warning. Question: How do you determine if the 2007 DST Patch has been installed on a BlackBerry smartphone? Answer: The following steps will determine if the DST patch is installed: 1. On the Home screen of the BlackBerry smartphone, select Options. 2. At the top of the Options list, 2007 DST Patch is displayed. 3. After the Patch Manager is installed, it will attempt to download and install the 2007 DST patch. To monitor the download, select DST 2007 Patch from the Options. If the DST 2007 patch is installed successfully, the 2007 DST Patch screen displays 2007 DST patch applied. Question: How do you determine what service pack version has been installed on the BlackBerry Enterprise Server? Answer: The following steps will determine which BlackBerry Enterprise Server service pack is installed: 1. Open the BlackBerry Manager and expand Servers 2. In the right pane, select the BlackBerry Enterprise Server from the list 3. In the right-bottom pane, refer to BlackBerry Enterprise Server Version 4. 9 Question: What is the duration between the reset reminder messages? Answer: To inform the BlackBerry smartphone user that a reset is imminent, the reminder reset messages occur every hour to a maximum of four warnings. After the fourth warning, the BlackBerry smartphone user is informed that the BlackBerry smartphone reset is about to occur and cannot be dismissed. Question: Is it possible to use the BlackBerry Manager to check if BlackBerry smartphone users have the DST patch applied? Answer: It is possible to see what applications BlackBerry smartphone users have installed, but it is displayed on an individual basis. The most efficient method for gathering information related to the DST patch is to download and use the DST2007Query tool, which is designed to provide a comprehensive inventory of BlackBerry smartphone users that have had the DST patch applied successfully. Question: How can you check if the rules were updated in the BlackBerry Configuration Database? Answer: The following SQL query can be used by administrators to review the existing DST information in BlackBerry Configuration database: USE BESMgmt SELECT Data FROM SyncDeviceConfig Question: Our organization applied the various DST patches back in After that, we moved to new hardware and performed a fresh install of BlackBerry Enterprise Server (importing the previous database). Do we need to update the BlackBerry Enterprise Server given this scenario? Answer: The DST updates for the host Windows Operating System should be performed, as well as the CDO update. Since the existing database is being retained, there should be no further requirements. Question: What events can be logged on BlackBerry smartphones related to the DST 2007 patch? Answer: The event log on the BlackBerry smartphone provides information about the status of the RIM DST 2007 patch and any specific issues that have occurred. 12 Question: What do the various status messages mean in the output of the DST 2007Query tool? Answer: The following is a brief description of each status message: Status Applied No Device Info Error Awaiting Patch Helper Not Installed Unsupported Version Unsupported Version Description The RIM DST 2007 patch has been installed successfully on the BlackBerry smartphone. The DST 2007 Query tool cannot detect the BlackBerry smartphone user s BlackBerry smartphone in the BlackBerry Configuration Database. There was an error updating the BlackBerry smartphone. The RIM DST 2007 patch is installed on the BlackBerry smartphone, but the BlackBerry smartphone has not yet been updated with the DST2007 changes. The DST 2007 Query tool did not detect the RIM DST 2007 patch on the BlackBerry smartphone. The DST 2007 Query tool detected an unsupported version of BlackBerry Device Software running on the BlackBerry smartphone. The BlackBerry smartphone will not be updated with the DST 2007 changes. The BlackBerry smartphone does not require an update to the time zone information for DST.
