7 PMIRGC Scholarship Program PURPOSE The PMIRGC Scholarship Program has multiple purposes To foster the profession of Project Management among the membership To drive more members to be involved in the Chapter and its activities To reward members for their Project Management and community involvement To enhance the PMIRGC membership experience ELIGIBILITY Must be a PMIRGC member in good standing upon application Must be pursuing education in a Project Management related career. Must commit to volunteering on a PMIRGC committee for the coming year. Must complete and submit the Scholarship Application within the stipulated deadline. Scholarships will be $2,500 each and the number available shall be determined by the amount received through the Sponsorship Program Check newsletter and website for application dates.

13 Assumption: Everyone here is a PMP or very familiar with project management. What is a Program? A group of related projects managed in a coordinated way to obtain benefits and control, not available from managing them individually. Programs and projects deliver benefits to organizations by enhancing current capabilities or developing new capabilities for the organization to use. A benefit is an outcome of actions and behaviors that provides utility to the organization. PMI: The Standard for Program Management Second Edition

14 Portfolio Program Project Program Project Project Project Project Project Project Interactions Between Portfolios, Programs & Projects Example of a Program: The construction of a complex commercial building Assume each discipline is managed separately (project) Each discipline sub-contractor (foundation, electrical, plumbing, etc.) would have it s own project manager What happens if each of these projects are constructed individually w/o anyone overseeing all the projects and ensuring proper coordination? Probably a lot of change orders!

15 What is Program Management? Program management is the centralized coordinated management of a program to achieve the program s strategic objectives and benefits. Program management focuses on project interdependencies It focuses also on benefits: o Opportunities to provide advantages to organizations Increased profits, improved morale, improved operations and growth The Standard for Program Management, From My experience I ve seen: o Reduced costs, code re-use, & overall better communication

16 PgMP vs PMP Comparison PgMP Manages a group of projects that are directed toward a common organizational objective Works to ensure ultimate success of the overall program Demonstrates sufficient knowledge and experience to make decisions that advance strategic objectives Defines and initiates projects and assigns project managers to manage them PMP Responsible for leading and directing project tasks Responsible for overall project success Manages projectsto stay within specified scope, budget and timeline (managing risk and quality as well) Responsible for individual projects

17 Why You Should Consider The PgMP Credential currently or have experience as, If you re a program manager looking to demonstrate a proven ability to manage complex, multiple projects and align results to organizational goals; increase your visibility and value with your organization; and separate yourself in the eyes of employers, the PgMP credential is for you. If I was already managing programs, why not get the credential, that if it became globally recognized as the PMP is, could give me the edge I needed to be given a promotion or selected for a job over someone else. 19 Why You Should Consider The PgMP Credential My philosophy Managing construction projects at Sandia Labs in the 1980s: No standard PM processes like the PMBOK Managed projects based on experience Managed stakeholders based on my interpersonal skills Bottom Line I made a lot of mistakes Managing SW development projects at Intel in the 2000s: The PMBOK became the standard for project management The PMP became the global credential standard for PMs Majority of employers require the PMP as a prerequisite for employment as a project manager.

20 Why You Should Consider The PgMP Credential I believe today, Program Management is where Project Management was in the early to late 1990s Program Management has become a globally accepted discipline (although companies differ on the definition) PMI has defined program management and offers a PgMP credential. I believe that the PgMP will become globally accepted quicker than the PMP due to PMI being accepted as the premier authority on Project Management PgMP still in it s global infancy but gaining traction Can still get in on the bottom floor Currently around 900 PgMPs globally Compared to over 500,000 PMPs

21 Why You Should Consider The PgMP Credential PMP launched in 1984 Around 1992 when PMI hit 900 PMPs (8 yrs.) PgMP pilot launched in 2007 Hit 900 PgMPs in 2012 (5 yrs.) Back to the question: What employers are requesting the PgMP credential? Currently, I believe we are at the point where many companies are looking for the PgMP credential when posting job requirements, but not necessarily requiring it. While putting together this presentation, I did a search on Monster.com and found 24 jobs identifying the PgMP credential.

22 Why You Should Consider The PgMP Credential Program Manager International Game Technology QUALIFICATIONS Bachelor's degree required. PMP certification preferred Must be motivated to acquire PMP within a year of being hired and potentially PgMP within 3 years of hire date. Program Manager SCI Consulting It is desirable that the Program Manager have the following experience and/or knowledge as an IT Program Manager: Bachelor s Degree in Computer Science, Information Systems Management, or related field. ITIL Foundations Certification. Program Management Professional (PgMP ) or Project Management Professional (PMP ) Certification

24 Value of the PgMP Credential in the Working World Presentation given at PMI Global Congress 2010 Authors: Jeff Hodgkinson, Sr. Program Manager, Intel Brian Grafsgaard, Director of Professional Services, QBS The authors wanted to go beyond the theoretical and provide empirical evidence albeit in the form of an informal survey of the value of the PgMP credential, supplemented by anecdotal evidence. Survey Conducted 1 Jan May 2010 Survey Sent to 246 of 413 Credential Holders 225 Credential Holders Responded (91.5%)! Responses Received from 14 Countries

36 PgMP Application Process PMI requires that all PgMP credential applicants read the PgMP Handbook and agree to the ethics terms and conditions. Download from the PMI web site; (URL in backup) Unlike other PMI credentials, you must pass a sequence of three evaluations to obtain the PgMP credential. Panel Review Extensive application review during which a panel of credentialed program managers assess your professional experience. (minimum experience next slide) Multiple-Choice Exam Computer based, 170 multiple-choice questions with 4-hour limit. Primarily scenario-based. Cost: $1,500 Multi-Rater Assessment (MRA) - Similar to 360 degree review. Minimum 12 reviewers: (Self / 1 Manager / 4 Peers / 4 Direct Reports / 3 Prof. References) 74 questions relating to program management competencies You get the results
