8 Introduction Modern buildings are complex systems which must bring together a variety of requirements under one roof. Conventional technical installations are all too often incompatible with the varied demands placed on modern buildings: Clients and investors demand economy and energy efficiency, while tenants want maximum flexibility, and installation engineers systems that can be easily adapted to different requirements. Even at the project planning and implementation stages, the right approach has to be selected. Installations with flat cables leave nothing to chance. General advantages The tenants in a building and thus their needs will often change in the course of the building s useful life. Modern technical installations are designed to cope with this. The great advantage of a flat cable system is that connections can be established or relocated at any point and at any time and without cable breaks! And all this with considerably reduced installation times. Safety No breaks are required in the flat cable at any point for extensions. Fewer contact points and less cable overall mean fewer potential risks. The quantity of cable is reduced, so the thermal load can be reduced. Advantages for planners Flat cable systems are especially suitable in situations in which connection points cannot be defined in advance. The installation outlay is significantly reduced in cases where many connections are required in close mutual proximity. High quality planning sets the course for future use, and can react flexibly to short-term changes during the set-up phase because with flat cable installation, the planner as well is playing it safe. Advantages for the electrical contractor Less cable breaks and less wiring means fewer potential sources of faults. Thanks to the cable s asymmetric profile, the risk of incorrect connections can be practically excluded. The modular system also supports the electrical contractor when he is working to deadlines: He can preassemble entire batteries of sockets or lamp connections in his workshop and install the ready-to-use flat cable on location in next to no time. All in all, he saves himself a lot of time and thus money i.e. his profits. Advantages for clients/investors Flexible installations can be adapted more easily to the changing requirements of the tenants requirements that often don t yet exist when the building is under construction. With a basic system of flat cables, technical installations will be ready to deal with the requirements of future tenants. Smaller adjustments generate less work, noise and dust. Even in locations where workstations have to be frequently refitted, flat cable installations can be adapted with a minimum of effort.

The flat cables are then laid into floor-, ceiling- or wall ducts in shops and show windows where the connecting points may often change for the installation of prefabricated houses in hanging ceilings for the supply of lamps. Flat cable enables installations to be completed easily with further connections.

11 Mounting procedure of the connector No (no need to strip the insulation - cannot be used for the supply of the cable!) Position the base of the connector and screw it on to its support if required. Position the asymmetric flat cable (right position is shown by the groove in one narrow side of the cable sheath). Is the flat cable not in the right position, it cannot be inserted into the base Cut the outgoing round cable to the desired length, dismantle it and introduce the leads. Tighten up the screws. Snap together the upper part and the base. 3 4 Fold back the lever. Lock! 5 The overcurrent protection devices will be chosen in relation to the length of installed cables so that their response time conform to specifications in case of malfunction. Possibility of pre-wiring: the installation becomes more rational! On request, the connectors may be provided in advance with round outgoing cables or with flat cable ecoline P3. On the building site the pre-wired boxes have only to be positioned and the electrical contact made by folding back the levers - every tool is useless.

19 Mounting procedure of connecting box No P Place the connecting box on the flat cable - the different lugs prevent the box from incorrect mounting. Push on the baseplate (light green). In case of incorrect mounting the bottom part of the box cannot be fitted with normal force Introduce the round cable into the flat cable box. Tighten the strain relief clamp to maintain the round cable. Turn in the pointed screws as far as they will go. 3 4 Clip the hood. The mounting procedure may also occur in a changed order: 3, 1, 2, 4, 5. To release the hood, insert a screwdriver in the slit provided for the purpose and lift slightly. 5 6 The overcurrent protection devices will be chosen in relation to the length of installed cables so that their response time conform to specifications in case of malfunction. Possibility of pre-wiring: the installation becomes more rational! On request, the connectors may be provided in advance with round outgoing cables. The round cables (fig. 3) may be connected in advance in the workshop of the electrician. On the building site the pre-wired boxes have only to be positioned - sockets and lighting circuits will be ready to function in a matter of seconds - to your advantage!

35 Mounting procedure of connecting box No / Place the connecting box on the flat cable - the different lugs prevent the box from incorrect mounting. Push on the baseplate (violet). In case of incorrect mounting the bottom part of the box cannot be fitted with normal force Power current and bus parts Introduce the round cable into the flat cable box. Tighten the strain relief clamp to maintain the round cable. Turn in the pointed screws as far as they will go. 3 4 Clip the hood. The mounting procedure may also occur in a changed order: 3, 1, 2, 4, 5. To release the hood, insert a screwdriver in the slit provided for the purpose and lift slightly. 5 6 The overcurrent protection devices will be chosen in relation to the length of installed cables so that their response time conform to specifications in case of malfunction. Possibility of pre-wiring: the installation becomes more rational! On request, the connectors may be provided in advance with round outgoing cables. The connecting boxes which are dedicated to be placed at regular intervals in office buildings may be mounted in advance (fig. 1-3 above) in our workshops. It is also possible to prewire all the sockets which are mounted in under-window ducts or floor ducts. On the building site, the connection to the flat cable will be done in a matter of seconds!
