2 Standard Grade Computing Studies - General Level Marking Instructions KU - Knowledge and understanding PS - Problem solving Structure of paper on paper The layout of this paper is modelled on the format of previous General level papers produced by SQA. There are six questions in total. The sixth question is selected by the centre from either Commercial Data Processing or Automated Systems according to which topic has been taught in preparation for the estimate examination. 4 1 This question deals with content from General Purpose Packages GPP s: DATABASE: field types (numeric, text, graphic, date, time) A football team have all their players information held in a computer database. A record from the database is shown below. (see question paper) (a) What data types are the following fields? (i) State two advantages of using a LAN instead of stand alone computers. (ii) State two differences between a LAN and a WAN. The manager uses a spreadsheet to keep track of how much money each salesperson earns each month. Below is part of the spreadsheet. The train is an automated system that does not have a driver. A sensor detects a white line and follows it (ii) Describe how a magnetic guidance system works. A sensor detects a magnetic strip under the floor and follows it (iii) Which of the two methods, described above, is better for the park? Give a reason for your answer.
