1 Interfacing ENGINEERING REPORT No: Introduction This rept describes interfacing the modem to s automation systems programmable controllers. These programmable logic controllers (PLC) consist of the PLC-5 series, PLC-2 series,, and MicroLogic family of controllers. Utilities ELECTRNIC SYSTEMS TECHNOLOGY INC. A:\ INSTALL The modem suppts the DF1 communications protocol. This allows the user to enable a READ WRITE message instructions to transfer data between PLCs. Once the is configured f DF1 protocol, the will read the destination address in the protocol and send the infmation to the and PLC with that address. The can route infmation through multiple s to extend the range of the netwk, transparent to the PLCs (see Figure 1). The modem is constantly being integrated into new automation systems. If you do not see an application listed in this rept, please call the facty to discuss your application with our engineering staff. 3 Engineering Rept This section contains example site layouts with repeaters. All diagrams and input examples, throughout this section, pertain to these example site layouts. When the utility prompts you f infmation on your site, use the example site layout infmation to help describe the terms used in the utility. If your site uses repeaters, always start programming with the Master. This will define the addressing f all PLC/ pairs f your site. 1. Select PLC Applications from the main menu (Reference Figure 3). 2. From the Control System Devices menu select Allen- Bradley (Figure 4). 3. The Welcome Menu will be displayed. After reading the infmation press Enter to continue. 4. The screen f selecting the process type will be displayed. Select the process type of addressing and press the CONTROL key and the Enter key together (CTRL-Enter). Note: The uses different addressing in their PLCs. Verify the type of process you are connecting to the modem befe proceeding. When using both types of process addresses in your site, be alert to which processs require Octal and Decimal addressing and program the attached to match. 5. Select the method of communication between processs. The most efficient method of communication is full-duplex. Note: The CONVERSION mode should only be used when a full-duplex device (i.e. PLC-5) is communicating with a half-duplex only device (i.e. RTU-1000). 6. Select the method of err detection that is configured in the serial device (i.e. Pt-0 on the process, KE module, etc.) Note: The Micro Logic controller only suppts CRC err checking and Full Duplex communication. 7. If the DF1 pt is not configured f hardware handshaking, select NO. If the DF1 pt is set f hardware handshaking you are unsure, select YES and press CTRL-Enter. Note: Pressing F1 in this menu will display the pinouts of the serial cables. Figures lists all the current cable configurations. Unit Add. #1 #2 #3 0-1 None None None None None None None None None Figure 7: Sample Configuration 8. Any PLC/ pair in the netwk that has the ability to initiate communication to other PLCs needs to be defined as an master. This command does not limit the PLC to a Master-Slave relationship, but it will instruct the to read the destination address from the message block. If the PLC is initiating communication to me than one PLC in the netwk, Press YES and CTRL- Enter. If the PLC is only responding to a message, Select NO and proceed to Step This section will program the address to the. Enter the address of the and PLC. The address of the and PLC should be the same. If you are programming the Master modem in a site with repeaters, select an arbitrary address such as 0 and proceed with the setup by pressing CRTL-Enter. Note: The addressing of the PLC and modems in your site will be defined by the repeater configuration. The address that you select f your Master may need to change depending upon the repeater configuration table. If you selected Octal addressing in step 4, the Octal address that you type into the box will be displayed in Decimal in the address on the Setup Program box (on the right side of the screen). 10. The modem has the ability to allow multidropped PLCs on a Data Highway Ethernet line to share one modem. This is a special setup of the modem called Grouping and is covered in the Grouping section of this rept. If your system does not have multi-dropped PLCs select NO and CRTL-Enter to proceed. 11. This screen asks if repeaters are needed. Look at your site layout and determine if you will be using repeaters. If you are using repeaters in the netwk, you will need to configure a repeater table f the Master only. The Master is the connected to the PLC that is initiating communication to remote PLCs through other remote stations. Do not program the repeater configuration in the repeating s the remote s. If you are programming a remote station in a repeater netwk, a repeater station Engineering Rept Page 3 Revised: 21 Jul 99

4 Engineering Rept not using repeaters in your netwk select NO and CTRL-Enter. Proceed to step If repeaters are required, select YES and CTRL- Enter on the repeaters screen. Refer to the following examples f guidance: 2 Example 1: Let s start with a very easy repeater configuration. Figure 6 would have 1 repeater route and the maximum number of PLC s would be 2 (including it s own address). Press CTRL-Enter and a repeater list shown in Figure 7 will be displayed. To read the repeater configuration table, the addresses listed on the left column will be the /PLC addresses used in the site. The three columns to the right of the Unit Address column will define the address of the s that will be used as repeaters in the netwk. F example, refer to Figure 7 and note that the first series of numbers (0-1) are direct from the Master Station. Of those two addresses (0-1) the address of 0 is reserved f the repeater address (see the second column #1). Looking at the second row of numbers from the top, you will see that address 2-3 will use /PLC address 0 as a repeater. Note that the addressing in Figure 6 cresponds to the repeater configuration table in Figure 7. Example 2: Figure 8 shows a complex, 13 node site with four (4) repeater routes. This example will illustrate the terms used throughout the utility and how the crespond to the stations in your site. Note: A repeater route consists of any in the netwk that repeats infmation to another modem. Enter the maximum number of repeater routes in the repeater routes box. In this example the maximum number of repeater routes would be four (4) Route Master Station Route Route 1 Route Figure 8: Sample Routing Enter the maximum number of addresses through any repeater route the number of direct addresses (direct repeaters included) plus the master, whichever is greater. Type this value in the maximum address block. In Example 8 the maximum number of addresses through any repeater route would be three (3) (see route #3, Figure 8), but the number of direct address plus the master would be five (5). Select the larger of these two numbers (5) and press CTRL-Enter. Unit Add. #1 #2 # None None None None None None None None None None None None None None None Figure 9: Sample Configuration List #2 A repeater list shown in Figure 9 will be displayed. To read the repeater configuration table, the addresses listed on the left column will be the /PLC addresses used in the site. The three columns to the right of the Unit Address column will define the address of the s that will be used as repeaters in the netwk. F example, refer to Figure 9 and note that the first series of numbers (0-19) are all direct from the Master Station. Of those twenty addresses (0-19) the addresses 0, 5, 10, and 15 are reserved f repeater addresses (see the second column #1). Looking at the second row of numbers from the top, you will see that address will use /PLC address 0 as a repeater (see Figure 8, route 2) and /PLC address will repeat through address 5 (see Figure 8, route 1). To use multiple repeaters, (see Figure 8, routes 3 and 4) follow the repeater configuration chart to determine addresses of the repeater s. Notice that the first address in any group that uses a repeater (address in left column) will be the following repeater group s repeater address. Look at Figure 9 and notice that the second group of addresses saved f repeaters ( #2, Figure 9) 20, 25, 30, and 35 are the first address in group from Number #1. F example, addresses repeat through /PLC addresses 0 (first repeater) and 20 (second repeater) (see Figure 8, route 4). Use the configuration table f addressing the remote PLC/ in your site. Proceed to step 14. Engineering Rept Page 4 Revised: 21 Jul 99
