Optical Networking for Aerospace System Provisioned through Plug and Play Architecture 12 August 2010 Keith Avery, Shane Francis, & James Lyke AFRL Mr. Patrick Collier SAIC Space Vehicles Directorate Air Force Research Laboratory

Outline SPA Basics The need for optical Current SPA-O Research & Development Network & Current/Planned State Components Qualification Simulations Summary 2

Consumer PnP vs. SPA platform platform plug-and-play component driver USB interface chip component Appliqué Sensor Interface Module (ASIM) plug-and-play component electronic datasheet interface module 3

SPA Basics Space Plug-and-play Architecture (SPA) is A system of systems A brand of plug-and-play (PnP) focused on shortening the time to construct a complex system Key technology elements Hardware Self-describing components and self-organizing networks Interfaces and interface modules (ASIMs) Software Electronic datasheets ( xteds ) and their vocabulary Automation of component discovery and exploitation (SDM) Tools Design (push-button tool flow) Test / integration (test bypass) 4

Distribution of bandwidth in a city 6

Distribution of bandwidth in systems Performance of components high data rate (< 600 Mb/s) SPA-S low data rate (< 1 Mb/s) SPA-U Very low data rate (< 10 Kb/s) SPA-1 (future) Very high data rate >10 Gb/s SPA-O Number of components 7

SPA network based on optical transport SPA network without optical (multiple ports/device) Idealized optical backplane SPA Device SPA Device SPA Router SPA Device SPA Router SPA Device SPA Device Hardware in loop interface HWILS 8

SPA-O Networking Scaleable Implemented using a few devices or up to numerous satellites Works with systems from 10Kbps to Tbps Ideally, any number of components can be connected to work as a system or systems can be connected and make requests to other systems in a transparent fashion Inclusive Compatible with heritage SPA devices Future implementation with ground segments Multiple connections and open architecture used E. routing & optical switching to true photonic routing Current design will focus on electrical routing and optical switching Plans are in the works for future true optical routing Ideally able to use optical fiber for low data rates as well 9

AFRL SPA-O Network Circuit switched sub-system using Spacewire for the control plane and SDM link ASIMs create SPA capability at all levels Free Space Laser Communications Link High Data Rate Payload High Data Rate Payload ASIM ASIM ASIM SPA Router High Data Rate Payload High Data Rate Payload SPA Router ASIM ASIM ASIM ASIM ASIM Satellite Data Model Computer On Board Processing and Mass Storage On Board Processing and Mass Storage Satellite Data Model Computer SPA-S Electrical Lines: SPA- O Optical Lines: 10

SPA-O Interface SPA-O Device Optically Enhanced ASIM (OASIM) Hi BW out RAW DEVICE OASIM RAW DEVICE Hi BW in Breakout I/O Ser Des config sync up power XTEDS Currently being done with Xilinx board. 11

Current SBIR Research and Product Development Several Small Business Innovative Research Contracts Dedicated to provide hardware and protocols for SPA Allow bottleneck problems to be solved in parallel Focused on a open-source mentality Current work includes: Optical switch integrated with an electrical router Routing protocols High speed optical transceivers High speed interfacing, processing, and mass storage All-optical routing 12

Enabling Optical Components Transceiver Modules Optical Switch Piezoactuator switching Commercial Switch Enclosure Space Micro SHOT Concept, including ROSA and TOSA 13

Qualification JEDEC 13.6 Subcommittee 14

Optical Network Simulation Create foundation for MMF and SMF optical networks that will allow for adjustments to key architecture parameters, devices, and models as needed Use the tool to determine SPA-O network performance and help define specifications. Produce simulation results for complex network topologies that incorporate bandwidth, total throughput, routing, optical coupling, link budget, error correction, protocol, radiation effects, and power consumption 15

SPA-O Vision Colorless No pre-ordained wavelength, set of wavelengths, or spectral channel constraints) Inclusive Capable of hooking into almost any external optical and/or electrical components Co-existence with other SPA interfaces Use the notion of bridges to connect / integrate to other (non-spa- O) sub-networks Very high potential bandwidth Envision multi-terabit/sec bisection bandwidths through black box components 16

Summary Optical network is essential for evolving systems Using Space Plug and Play Architecture with an Optical layer Component and network development well underway Future developments will create Tera-bit/second rates and all-optical networks 17
