1 KIT OUTLINE 6500 Packet-Optical Platform Blended Learning Kit (BLK), Release 10.1 Course Description This Blended-Learning Kit (BLK) is designed for personnel responsible for the Operation, Administration, Maintenance, and Provisioning (OAM&P) of a 6500 Optical Transport Network (OTN) nodes and networks. This OAM&P kit is comprised of Instructor-Led Training (ILT) plus prerequisite Web-Based Training (WBT). Students are required to complete the WBTs prior to the ILT portion of the kit. This kit includes: WBT O Product Overview WBT CN06 ESD, Laser Safety, and Fiber Cleaning WBT O Control Plane Overview ILT O OR VILT X TRN--BLK September 2014

2 Objectives Upon successful completion of this course, students should be able to: Describe the common hardware for the 6500 Describe Safety and Electrostatic Discharge (ESD) guidelines that must be applied when working on optical products Identify key features of Ciena documentation Describe the 6500 User Interface and Administration features and perform various activities with Site Manager Describe the key parameters required in the initial nodal System Line-up And Testing (SLAT) process, as well as the Data Communication features of the 6500 Introduction to OTN Technology Identify the OTN hardware Discuss OTN Facility Terminology Describe signal flow in a 6500 OTN shelf Identify Equipment and Facility Provisioning parameters Explain cross-connect provisioning and perform cross connections Describe the Protection Switching features available on the 6500 and perform various Protection Switching activities Describe the 6500 OTN Performance Monitoring (PM) features Retrieve PM data from a node Clear alarms using Fault Management procedures Conditions for Instructor-Led Training The maximum number of students for this course is 10. Lectures take place in a classroom using projector presentations Demonstrations and exercises will be conducted in the classroom and training lab. Students receive course presentation material and product documentation on a USB drive. If the ILT portion of this course is delivered outside a Ciena facility where captive lab equipment is not available, the lab equipment in a Ciena facility can be accessed remotely using a WebEx connection. Remote lab equipment access does have limitations with respect to the amount of tests and procedures that can be performed.

3 Prerequisites To be successful in this blended-learning kit, students should have a basic knowledge of: Fiber optics and digital communications technology Telecommunications systems Experience with telecommunications systems Recommended: Ciena's Optical Communications Associate (OC-A) Certification Additionally, prior to attending the Instructor-led portion of this kit, students should have completed: CN06 ESD, Laser Safety, and Fiber Cleaning [duration: 30 minutes] O Product Overview [duration: 2 hours 30 minutes] O Control Plane Overview [duration: 1 hour 30 minutes] Conditions for Prerequisite Web-based Training Interactive Web-based presentations are conducted on: Personal Computer (PC) Windows XP or later MAC OSX 10.6.x or later Sound card with external speakers or headphones Browser support: PC: Microsoft Internal Explorer 8.x or later; Firefox 3.6.x or later; Google Chrome 10.x or later MAC: Apple Safari 4.0.x or later Students need to ensure that any pop-up blocker is disabled. Macromedia Flash Player and/or Windows Media Player web browser plugins are required. Reference documents are available on the Ciena portal. Duration The average time to complete the training courses in this kit is approximately 4 hours and 30 minutes for the Web-based components and 4 days for the instructor-led course.
