3 There are two things needed to be able to modify the default configuration of a keypad. The Configuration Utility and the KRS Virtual Com Driver. KRS USB Keypad Software.zip Note: No drivers are needed for the keypad to operate as a keyboard. It is a HID device in standard mode. 1. Put <KRS Config.*> files into a directory on the PC to be used for configuration. Note that all configuration files that are created by the user will be placed into this directory by default. 2. Put <KRS_VCOMM_Driver.inf> into a temporary directory on the PC. This is only required for the configuration machine. Follow the instructions in the.txt for installation. USB Connection: The keypad is USB 1.1 and 2.0 Compliant. You can use it as a Keyboard as a HID Device on a USB 3.0 Port. However to customize the keypad it MUST be connected to a USB 1.1 or 2.0 port of a PC running Windows XP or newer. Supported Operating Systems: Operation Any USB HID compliant OS: Microsoft XP to Windows 8.1, MAC, Linux, Embedded OS s, Raspberry PI, Arduino, ipads *, iphones *, Surface Tablets *, Android devices *. Configuration Windows Vista through Windows 8.1. Virtual operating systems may or may not work depending upon your setup but they are not supported for configuration. They do work in HID mode. HID Human Interface Device: Most operating systems (OS) recognize basic HID devices, such as mice and keyboards, without the need for a specific driver. This facilitates the plug and play (PnP) attributes of USB devices. Basically, the PC Configuration program can: Read from the Keypad Write to the Keypad Load from a PC configuration file.krs extension. Save and update to a PC configuration file.krs extension. Manually update any of the 20 keys with extended key sequences or the sound configuration operation. Keypad Beeps on Power UP 1 Long Beep Keypad is operating as a HID device, not configurable. 3

Configuration mode is entered by pressing buttons #2 and #3 on the bottom row at the same time within 3 seconds of connection to a USB 1.1 or 2.0 Port. The Red LED will slowly flash when in configuration mode. Starting configuration mode will ask for the device driver. Configuration program Starting: The PC configuration program will NOT start unless a keypad in ALREADY in configuration mode with the Windows driver loaded. Once running you will not need to quit the program to program multiple keypads. 4

5 Configuration Program Overview: Screen Buttons Connect Press this to connect (must be done to find keyboard). Read Configuration from Keypad Reads keypad (must be done so program know current keypad setup). Disconnect Must be done to connect to another keypad. (will show PRE- WRITE setup upon disconnecting keypad. Load Template File Read saved configuration Update Template Updates.KRS config file Save as New Template File Saves Mode 4 definition to a.krs file. Write Configuration to Keypad Used to update current settings to keypad. Speaker Key Clicks and Sound enable. Beeper Sounds on Beeper will sound in place of a 101- keyboard s LED s (i.e. Sound on if Caps Lock LED was told to turn on) Comm Port: - Automatically detected, not user configurable in program. There are two tabbed pages on the bottom part of the screen. The first tab has the current keypad configuration (you must Connect and Read it). The second tab is where you create the key sequences or update an existing one. All KRS legacy PS/2 modes (1, 2, and 3) are supported by simply choosing the respective mode. The new, custom sequences are defined under Mode. 5

6 YOU MUST BE IN MODE 4 IN ORDER TO CREATE A CUSTOM SEQUENCE. Once you have created a configuration (mode 1, 2, 3, or 4), you can Save it to a PC file, and/or you can load it directly into the Keypad. (There are buttons for each.) Once you have created and saved a configuration. Name it something that can be associated with the overlay strip. You can easily load the configuration into multiple Keypads by simply Connecting each keypad, Loading the configuration to the keypad, then hit the Disconnect button. The keypad will immediately drop its usb comm connection and re- enumerate as a HID Keyboard. It is easy to keep both the PC configurator running as well as Notepad in order to configure and test the keypads. When you DISCONNECT from the keypad the Current Keypad Configuration TAB will show the keypads initial read state, not the updated written state. This is done so the user can review what the old configuration was prior to writing the new configuration. Modes of Operation Default Mode: Mode 1: Sound Enabled, Scroll Lock sound indication Sound can be changed in any mode but only key sequences can be made in Mode 4 6

Mode 4: Custom Sequences - (Yellow = no characters, Green = characters) Mode 4 button setup: A regular 101 key keyboard or Laptop keyboard is required to create key sequences for alpha/numeric keys.

Special characters are entered from the dialog box only. Double Click the button location you want to setup. The Key Sequence box will appear as seen below. The Keys in this dialog box are used to assign those functions to the button. i.e. the F1 key is selected to have that key send an F1. Trying to use a keyboards F1 key will not work, the special characters on this screen must be used for definitions. However you can enter a capital character by using the shift on the programming keyboard. i.e. A The Dialog box must be selected or highlighted when entering keys sequences. The Dialog box can only be edited in sequential order starting at the last key. To change a character you have to back space over the keys from the end to change any. This is due to the keys being programmable with more that one key. Up to 20 characters can be written to each button location. Buttons cannot call buttons. 8

9 Repeat Usage: If only one character is entered into the button location then the repeat function is defined by the OS. If more than one character is entered into the button location then the repeat function is defined by selecting the Auto- Repeat function and defining the desired rate. Each button s repeat is independent of each other. Keys that are one character to send but are visually more than one are shown with brackets 9
