19 Automatic Meter Reading (AMR) The Electrical Meters used for AMR are called as SMART METERS. SMART METERS : A smart meter is usually an electrical meter that 1. Records consumption of electrical energy in intervals of an hour or less. 2. Communicates that information at least daily back to the utility for monitoring and billing purposes. 19

20 Smart Meters Traditionally, the AMR enables the user at remote place to gather the information of electrical meter in a UNI-DIRECTIONAL way. But, by the introduction of SMART METERS the two-way communication between meter and central system is possible and is called as Automatic Meter Interface (AMI) AMI AMR 20

27 AMR/AMI Applications on PLCC Power Line Communications (PLCC) is a promising technology that is rapidly gaining traction in Smart Meter Reading (AMR/AMI) demand response and SCADA applications. PLCC is the most efficient and reliable communications Interface at the lowest cost. In India., Brain & Iris is the only company that offers reliable Meter Data Communication i.e., AMR/AMI applications on PLCC. 27

28 AMR/AMI Applications on PLCC The Single phase energy meter and PL communication module are connected on the same phase. The communication between meter and PL node is over the serial channel (UART/RS485). PL node will be continuously polling to the single phase energy meter over the serial port to get the metering information. The Received metering information is sent to the AMR/AMI DCU over the powerline channel using FSK/OFDM technology. Polling time interval is set as 2 min and can be adjusted according to the user. Each PL node has a unique MAC ID for identification. 28
