2 Smart Grid solutions Public distribution Smart Grid solutions At its simplest, Smart Grid refers to a more efficient, modernized electrical Grid, where operational and technical goals deal with reliability, security, resilience, improved asset utilization or operational efficiency. These factors impact on peak demand reduction, decrease in interruptions, integration of renewable sources, and reduction of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. Ormazabal provides reliable solutions to these challenges, including the design, engineering, integration and support of solutions for distribution automation, integration of distributed generation and advanced metering. Our world class electrical infrastructure, electronics, communications and system applications are IEC TC57 compliant to guarantee compatibility and optimum fitting across the Smart Grid architecture. The result is a complete tailored solution, adapted to the needs of every network, from automation to complex managed Grid infrastructure systems. Ormazabal Ormazabal is the leading provider of customized solutions to electrical utilities, to electrical end users as well as renewable energy systems applications based on its own technology. We encourage the development of the electrical sector towards the challenges of the future energy needs. We cooperate with the world s leading local, regional and global companies in the electrical sector with a strong commitment to innovation towards personal safety, network reliability, energy efficiency, and sustainability. Velatia Velatia is a family-run, industrial, technological and benchmark global group which operates in the areas of electrical networks, electronics and communication networks as well as in the consulting, security and aeronautics component sectors, where safety, efficiency and reliability are valued. 4 Smart Grid solutions Public distribution Distribution Automation - DA Definition Functions Notable projects Distribution networks are under high pressure to meet requirements to convert their conventional static Grids into modern and dynamic Smart Grids. In particular, the increasing occurrence of Distributed Energy Resources (DER) is influencing this trend, as well as the need to improve quality and reliability in MV and LV networks. New requirements are arising for automation, monitoring control and protection of distribution substations and ring main units (RMUs). These requirements are most suitably supported by consistent and flexible system solutions. Benefits Distribution Operation Modeling and Analysis Fault Location, Isolation and Service Restoration (FLISR) Self-healing Contingency Analysis Multi-level feeder reconfiguration Reliability of protection relay, coordination and selectivity Voltage and VAR control Technical losses estimation Pre-arming of Remedial Action Schemes Coordination of Emergency Actions Coordination of Restorative Actions Intelligent Alarm Processing Switching control (MV, LV) Directional fault detection (MV) Switchable power source control local/remote (MV) Switchable power load control local/remote (MV) Bi-directional and unintended islanding protection (MV) A, kv, kw, kvar, kwh, kvarh measurement (MV, LV) Phasor measurement (MV, LV) Condition monitoring (T, P, No. operations ) Realiability of the automatisms Full remote management of the equipment Products Switchgear Distribution transformer with automatic on-load tap changer Smart fault Detection & Protection Remote Control Monitoring sensors Communications IEC / IEC / Modbus TCP / IEEE DNP3 TCP IEC / Modbus RTU / IEEE DNP3 FTP / SFTP / LDAP / LDAPS / DHCP/ HTTP / HTTPS / NTP Spain: SmartCity Malaga defines the new energy management model in big cities, allowing 20% savings in energy consumption and avoiding emissions of 6,000 tonnes of CO 2 per year from 11,000 domestic clients, 900 SMEs and 300 industrial customers. 5 Public distribution Smart Grid solutions Advanced Metering Infrastructure - AMI Definition Functions Notable projects Electrical utilities are focusing on developing AMI, i.e. Smart Meter and Meter Data Management, to implement demand side management, residential demand response, aggregated control of distributed generation and to serve as the chief mechanism for implementing dynamic pricing solutions. AMI provides customers with a dynamic electricity tariff and it can help electrical utilities achieve necessary load reductions. This allows distribution system operators (DSO) to optimize essential key processes and to offer new services and data to their customers. Benefits The architectural solution for AMI includes the Data Concentrator function. This function collects and formats data from all the Smart Meters connected to the transformer The proposed solution provides per phase monitoring of demand, with real-time voltage and current data acquisition per LV line. This data enables the detection of losses and the identification of imbalances for power flow optimization. Additionally, load change data enables the identification of LV topologies A key feature of the Data Concentrator is to provide cybersecurity. Losses detection and estimation Energy balance calculation Power Meter remote control & configuration Metering Data Concentration (collection and reporting) A, V, kw, kvar, kwh, kvarh measurement (LV) LAN/WAN communications (LV PLC, Wireless) Products Data concentrator Supervisory meter LV feeder supervisory Monitoring sensors (LV) Communications PRIME Alliance technology G3PLC Alliance technology 6LoWPan Interoperability (Open standards) Spain: Iberdrola STAR: 180,000 customers experience the improvements in quality of supply and reduced incidences in Spain s largest AMI project. 3,000 Transformer substations and 100,000 PRIME Smart Meters installed until 2014, allow remote meter reading, remote connection and disconnection. 6 Smart Grid solutions Public distribution Integration of Distributed Energy Resources - DER Definition Benefits Products The integration of fluctuating Renewable Energy Sources (RES) and Distributed Energy Resources (DER) into today s distribution networks can result in various challenges for network planning and operation. On the one hand changing power flows will affect the voltages, which can result in voltages violating the operational steady-state maximum and minimum voltage limits. On the other hand the addition of DER generation makes the total load exceed the network s capacity. It causes serious problems in cables, overhead lines and distribution transformers, which makes it necessary to strengthen the networks and to ensure security of supply. Safe installations: Special attention paid to the safety of people and property The connection of distributed generators and islanding Voltage and VAR control Functions Switching control (MV, LV) Bi-directional and unintended islanding protection (MV) A, kv, kw, kvar measurement (MV, LV) Power flow management Phasor measurement (MV, LV) Condition monitoring (T, P, No. operations ) VAR Control (MV, LV) Battery charging/feeding control (LV) LAN/WAN communications (MV BPL, Wireless) Switchgear Transformer with automatic on-load tap changer Fault Detection & Protection Remote Control Specific DER/RES protection relays Monitoring sensors Projects Spain: MW installed in PV power plants connected in MV.
