Visualization Software for Wide-rea Situational wareness Power ffiliates Program May 20, South First Street Champaign, Illinois (217) Mark Laufenberg, Ph.D.
History of PowerWorld 1994: Simulator Version 1.0 was created by Professor Thomas Overbye at the University of Illinois. Original motivation was for teaching power system operation to nontechnical audiences. Emphasis on visualization PowerWorld Corporation continues to maintain close ties with the University 1996: PowerWorld Corporation was formed to further develop and commercialize the tool. Simulator evolved into a powerful and robust power system analysis and visualization environment. 2000: PowerWorld Retriever developed for real-time visualization 2006: PowerWorld Simulator surpasses 500 customer installations worldwide 2
PowerWorld Overview Simulator Load flow analysis and power system visualization State-of-the-art user interface Retriever Real-time visualization for the control room and remote access Easy for customer to configure and customize OPS-X: NERC-approved operator training exercises 3

Visualization and nalysis for Operations Historically, operational data has been trapped inside legacy Energy Management Systems (EMS) EMS software is very expensive, difficult to use, and difficult to modify PowerWorld Retriever has been used in real time operations as a visualization and analysis tool that augments and replaces some EMS functionality Much lower cost Much easier to use and implement Much easer and cheaper to modify and improve new analysis tool Integrated Topology Processing breaks down the historical wall between operational data and the rest of the enterprise ITP allows engineers and operators to do use fast, easy to use tools to improve situational awareness and increase grid efficiency and reliability 18

SFNR V2 Project nnounced 31 March, 2011 Winning Team: SmartCloud, PowerWorld, Instep Goal: Situational wareness for FERC, NERC and the Regions 30
SFNR Implementation SmartCloud will set up a new NERCnet/ICCP node in Boston at a highly secure data center Users will log into SFNR site Customized version of PowerWorld will be installed, along with cases, diagrams, and links to data Real-time data will be updated at a user specified interval 31
Retriever Implementation Models: Full topology models, exact copies of EMS model, filtered for SFNR use (230 kv and above) liases/tags: Linked via file used by RCs during EMS model set up Diagrams: Built by PowerWorld automatically and edited manually 32
RC Concerns Data is being shared already among Reliability Coordinators (12 of them) However, not historically shared in a meaningful way with NERC and FERC lso concerns with marketers, traders, and other industry participants 33
