5 IT History Lesson In the beginning. We bought all our infrastructure from one vendor And we didn t have networks So storage technology and network technology followed different paths, and are still trying to converge today Then came plug (in)compatibility The Client/Server era Microsoft, specifically Windows And with one exception, organisations built a physical infrastructure 5

8 So What is Cloud Computing? The cloud is IT as a service, delivered by virtualised resources that are independent of location. Resources are probably (but not necessarily) delivered by the Internet. Cloud computing assumes a shared infrastructure, on-demand characteristics and highly flexible management. All of which should help an organisation use its information as a competitive weapon Computer tell me about. But what about service levels? 14

17 Facebook Outage Silences 150,000 Users For the past week and a half, several thousand Facebook users were unable to access their accounts because of a technical issue with a server. The outage silenced.05 percent of Facebook users, or 150,000 people, which may not seem like that many, considering that Facebook now has over 300 million users. But if this could happen to even a small percentage, what's to say it couldn't happen again to even more users of the world's largest social networking site? The affected Facebook users are slowly seeing their accounts restored, though some profile data may have been lost. Facebook itself was silent on the matter until yesterday, when it gave CNET the skinny, saying the issue was caused by "a technical issue with a single database." Facebook also iterated that it had nothing to with "hackers or other malicious activity." 17

18 (Credit: Corinne Schulze/CNET) A week ago, though, Microsoft's Danger unit experienced a huge outage that left many T-Mobile Sidekick users without access to their calendar, address book, and other key data. That's because the Sidekick keeps nearly all its data in the cloud as opposed to keeping the primary copy on the devices themselves. Things got even worse on Saturday, as Microsoft said in a statement that data not recovered thus far may be permanently lost. It's not immediately clear how many people lost their data. The outage earlier in the week affected a broad swath of Sidekick users, though many had data return during the week. While outages in the cloud computing world are common (one need only look at recent issues with Twitter or Gmail), data losses are another story. And this one stands as one of the more stunning ones in recent memory. The Danger outage comes just a month before Microsoft is expected to launch its operating system in the cloud--windows Azure. That announcement is expected at November's Professional Developer Conference. One of the characteristics of Azure is that programs written for it can be run only via Microsoft's data centers and not on a company's own servers. 18

24 So why does this make sense.. IT should have provided as-a-service ages ago IT MUST deliver to the business, not give it what IT thinks it wants to have Clouds are out there right now But they need to mature and need to federate DC-a-a-S? This is not my world, how I wish I was younger. The benefits are compelling all round, and its not just about efficiency Go play type G-Cloud into a Google search. 24

26 So will you be blinded, or will you stay in the dark? Computer technology has often promised so much, but delivered so little. The last time I was as excited as I am now about Cloud Computing was when I met my first computer 39 years ago. The benefits will not just be to business organisations, and will not just be financial they will have far reaching consequences in our personal use of information. Let s not mess it up 26
