Engineering Computer Services College wide discussion exchanges Recommendations from faculty
Engineering Computer Services User Satisfaction Survey: Overall, I am satisfied with the service that ECS provides.
Engineering Computer Services User Satisfaction Survey: Please rate your level of satisfaction with ECS staff in the following areas.
Department Affiliation Department Responses ChE 6 CEE 8 ECE 23 MIE 18 Total 55
Q1: Overall I am satisfied with the service that ECS provides: Response Strongly Disagree (7.3%) Disagree (32.7%) Neutral (20%) Agree (29.1 %) Strongly Agre (10.9%)
Q2: ECS staff is responsive Responses Strongly Disagree ( 1.8%) Disagree (21.8 %) Neutral (18.2 %) Agree (47.3 %) Strongly Agree (10.9%)
Q3: ECS staff responds to requests in a professional manner. Response Strongly Disagree (0%) Disagree (1.8%) Neutral (25.5 %) Agree (54.5%) Strongly Agree (18.2%)
Q4: ECS staff performs their work well. Responses Strongly Disagree (0 %) Disagree (17.3%) Neutral (25%) Agree (48.1%) Strongly Agree (9.6%)
Q5: Please check the services that you use through ECS License Management (19.2%) File Storage (9.6%) Responses Server Hosting/Management (7.7%) Web Site Hosting (38.5%) Responses Backup Services (3.8%) (94.2%)
Suggestions for improving ECS service Much quicker response to problems Larger knowledge domain More of a "how can we help attitude" among some Better defined mission Better leadership Better interactions with faculty and staff on call person 24/7 when the network or mail service goes down frequent updates (e.g. monthly newsletter) outlining upgrades/other actions for the month. Better communication between ECS staff (network, software, administrators) Better tracking of the help request status. Fewer shutdowns in service. Quicker response and follow up. Reduce scope of services to those that are Engineering specific, with OIT handling general issues (unless staff can be greatly increased). Routine checking on student labs to make sure they are functioning properly (printers working, software and hardware working) Stop duplicating what OIT already does and focus on what an engineering college needs above and beyond what the campus needs. Get out of the , desktop support, web hosting, and basic hardware businesses. Focus on specialized undergraduate labs, specialized licenses, and advanced services to support engineering teaching and research.
Please list any services that you would like to see ECS offer. Provide services related to specific research needs Help support website Assistance with creating websites. Assistance with setting up local networks for computing between home and the office. Most important, more time to devote to these sorts of issues. Large data storage for labs (server space). Large file transfer, Matlab purchase A feature on the ECS web page indicating the status of the mail server. When having problems with mail from off site and/or when ECS is closed, it would be helpful to be able to check quickly and remotely to see if the problem is the server. Continued strong support for COE-uniques academic computing needs, web site support, server support etc.
Additional Comments ECS does a good job in general but I think the volume, types of services, and availability of OIT have led to recent comparisons between the two organizations. The mail server issues have been particularly frustrating although the situation has been better over the last few weeks. ECS needs to focus its energies into providing those services that only ECS can provide. Do those things well and have a long-term plan for serving the College. If there are areas of dissatisfaction with ECS services that are a direct result of limited resources, this should be communicated clearly to the faculty and administration. The university has a vision for becoming more competitive. There are advocates for new classroom buildings, for new laboratory buildings, for adequate water and power to support a larger student population, for traffic managements,.... ECS should be the advocate for scientific information technology. The Chancellor knows that UMass cannot be top notch without a good College of Engineering. But no one is telling him the IT infrastructure requirements necessary for a good COE. Let OIT advocate for the baseline IT needs. ECS needs to articulate the special needs of the college. These might be inexpensive, e.g., routable IP addresses because we depend on data-in-motion, to the more expensive, e.g, adequate bandwidth and latency to be players in the NSF peta-scale computing program.
