PC Power Management Study in Spring 2009 of all Ross servers, desktops and laptops (makes and models) Classroom, Lab, Faculty and Staff PCs Estimate: $50,000 and 1.3 million in CO2 Presented to Dean w/ Budget submission Implemented power management based on Windows AD Group Policies Good start; Not ideal

PC Power Management

PC Power Management Participating in Climate Saver BigFix pilot More flexibility to manage individual power management vs. group policy Wake-on-LAN for remote desktop users Better reporting Today: Clients pushed out to all PCs Waiting for reporting freeze

Printing 2002 MBA and BBA students print 4 million sheets of paper 2003 Year long study shows 92% of students print under 1,600 sheets 2004 Partnered with UM Housing to connect MCard to Xerox MFD Printing reduced to 1.8 million sheets Students still print to multiple Xerox Bad!

Printing 2008 Pilot virtual queue with Equitrac high-speed, Xerox print/scan/copy/fax devices equipped with virtual queue technology 1.2 million sheets Located in all faculty, staff and student areas.

Printing Using ScanFlowStore product to connect Xerox with Windows file store and SharePoint Reduce copying More digital

Digital Signage 11 touch-panel information displays One at each entrance to Ross buildings People, Events, Maps, Posters Way-faring Built on top of existing Business Apps All in Real-time Paper posters = $25-30,000 per year

University of Michigan Health System GreenIT PC Power Management Project Status July 16, 2009

Objectives Continue to provide predictable, reliable, and secure managed computers, otherwise known as CoreImage Reclaim energy costs from inactive computer displays Reclaim energy costs from unused computers during offhours Implemented in phased approach 18

How we approached this effort Measured desktop power consumption Obtained Michigan utility rate averages Assessed technology options Evaluated which changes were possible and appropriate Determined quantity of desktops affected by each proposed modification Reviewed our analysis with Facilities 19

Power Management of UMHS Computers Develop UMHS communication campaign led by Public Relations and Marketing Communications Established Power Management Policy: UMHS GreenIT Policy Established standard operating procedure for those computers that should be exceptions 20

Work completed thus far Phase 1 Monitors put into stand-by after 15 minutes of inactivity Savings realized approximately $420K/year Phase 2 Introduction of nightly power shutdown to UMHS managed computers Savings realized approximately $225K/year Shutdown occurs at completion of maintenance Phase 3 Introduction of computer wake up Savings realized approximately $280K/year Shutdown at end of business Expanded scope to include our ambulatory care computers 21

Phase 4 and beyond Revisit all previously excluded areas Anticipate 10-20% can be included Developing temporary exclusion utility Allows staff to exclude their computer for up to 7 days at a time. Investigating options for remote wake up How to perform and how to manage Evaluate to whom do we provide this ability Assessing addition opportunities Printers Thin clients to replace our Kiosk computers 22

Campus Computing Sites Robert Jones Sites Printing Coordinator and Green Coordinator

+ How green are we? A short talk about Campus Computing Sites effort to move toward greener computing.

Where do we begin? Macs 1325 PC s and Monitors 7 Dell model types 8 Apple model types Over 27,000,000 pages printed/year 261 Printers

+ Findings PC + Monitor = kwh/year (avg.) Mac = kwh/year (avg.) Printers = negligible Total power consumption = 1,557,045.5 kwh/year All 2025 Sites computers costs $135,463 a year to power. Printers only draw significant power when printing, otherwise negligible. Costs $51.60 to operate a Mac/year. Costs $71.97 to operate a PC + Monitor/year. A single Printer (HP 4515) costs about $38.46/year to operate. Ran 6-week paper waste analysis during busiest (printing) time of the year, 1% abandonment rate!!!

Changes and Challenges + WHAT DID WE DO? *Made Green a priority Monitor sleeps after 20 minutes. Hard Drive spins-down after 30 minutes. System sleep after 1 hour. THESE CHANGES OCCUR ON BOTH PLATFORMS. Challenges *How do we update a sleeping computer? *No measurable results *Does duplex printing really result in environmental savings?

Other What are our savings? Total power consumption = 1,557,045.5 kwh/year. This costs the University $135,463. We believe + our clients are in power-save AT LEAST 1/3 of time. This means a savings of $45,154/yearly for the University Or 519,015 kwh/year *This is the equivalent of 48.7 average American homes completely powered-down for a year.

Where do we go from here? + *Big Fix? *Virtual Sites Printing changes (100% PC paper, further duplex testing, more efficient Rover routes)

Current Energy Usage in Pilot kwh kwh

Current Energy Usage in Pilot Total energy consumption/week for pilot machines: kwh $720 a year in energy costs for 14 computers ($51/person). $35,700 a year in energy costs for all MSIS-supported machines! (not including all the other computers, servers, networking equipment, etc it requires to make those computers work!)

Pop Quiz Your computer must be kept on at night in order to receive updates FALSE Turning on and off your computer repeatedly can wear out your computer; it is therefore better to leave it on FALSE

Pop Quiz My computer s screen saver helps save energy when I am not using my computer FALSE Laptops use less energy than desktops TRUE! But
