5 Introduction Demand for building acclimatisation rises continuously. Several references throughout Europe show the technical feasibility of district cooling. Scope of the feasibility study is a district cooling system for a commercial area in Mannheim, Germany. 13 Conclusions A cadastre of cooling is a useful tool for identifying potential areas for a district cooling system. The new method of evaluating the cooling demand of a building from monthly electricity data gives plausible results. Under the specific premises of the chosen commercial district a cold water system with centralised centrifugal compressors and chilled water storage is the most economic alternative. High efficiency of modern compression chillers provides some advantages versus absorption chillers at current energy tariffs. Especialy, the application of a cool thermal storage enables the use of low energy tariffs for times of charging. Total costs of a district cooling system are very sensitive towards energy prices. A system with absorption chillers could only be profitable and achieve equal costs if a variable heat tariff is offered by the local district heating company Seite 13 34th Congress of Euroheat & Power, May 2009
