For our January meeting we re thrilled to have Dr. Kishor Khankari, an ASHRAE Distinguished Lecturer, presenting on airflow distribution for healthcare facilities. He is an expert in this field and we re excited to have him here in KC to share his insights. For those able to attend the ASHRAE 2017 Winter Conference in Las Vegas there is still time to sign up and plenty of flights and hotels available. There are great opportunities for continuing education through the various seminars, plus you can get involved with any of the technical committees that pique your interest. Additionally, there are plenty of chances to network with leaders in our industry. The conference is Jan 28 th through February 1 st. Registration can be found here: conferences/conferences/2017-ashrae-winter-conference We ve got a couple great social events coming up early next year: Happy Hour on Thursday January 19 th at Pin Stripes at Prairie Fire, Nall Avenue Overland Park, KS 66223, 5 pm Bowling Tournament on Friday, March 24 th location TBA Both of these events are hosted by YEA, and ALL ASHRAE Members (as well as those interested in joining ASHRAE) are invited and encouraged to attend. Please note that the happy hour on the 19 th is just (2) days after our chapter s 100-year anniversary. We ll celebrate this milestone during the February 6 th luncheon meeting, which will also be our Past Presidents meeting. We re also going to celebrate this with during CRC which we re hosting in August. More details will follow next month on the CRC including events, sponsorships and registration. 2 Airflow Management for Healthcare Facilities Kishor Khankari, Ph.D. Air is the primary carrier of heat, moisture, and contaminants in health care facilities such as patient rooms, isolation rooms, and operating rooms. The flow path of supply air plays an important role in determining the air velocities, air temperatures, concentration of contaminants, and path of airborne pathogens in these spaces. These factors in turn determine thermal comfort of occupants, indoor air quality, and potential for transmission of airborne pathogens. This presentation will focus on the importance of HVAC configuration on airflow distribution and flow path of airborne contaminants in patient rooms and operating rooms. In addition, this presentation will cover the applications of active chilled beams, radiant heating and cooling, and displacement ventilation in patient rooms. Dr. Kishor Khankari, Ph.D. provides engineering solutions and insights through Physics based simulations and analyses. Kishor has several years of experience in providing optimized HVAC solutions to a wide variety of applications involving external wind engineering, plume dispersion, displacement ventilation, natural ventilation, radiant heating and cooling, and indoor air quality and thermal comfort optimization for office spaces, patient rooms, operating rooms, cleanrooms, justice facilities, data centers, and warehouses. Dr. Khankari has developed a patented technology of a wind band design of exhaust fan assembly systems. He has developed several easy- to-use analytical software tools which are regularly used by design engineers in a variety companies including those in HVAC industry, critical facilities, and automotive industries. A noted expert in his field, he has a Ph.D. from the University of Minnesota and has been regularly published in several technical journals and trade magazines. Dr. Khankari is an eloquent speaker and has made several presentations worldwide on topics related to design and optimization of HVAC systems at various technical conferences and professional meetings. Dr. Kishor Khankari is a Fellow member of ASHRAE. He is a past President of Detroit ASHRAE Chapter. He is a past Chair of ASHRAE Technical Committee TC9.11 Clean Spaces and a Vice Chair of Research Administration Committee (RAC) at national level. He is a recipient of ASHRAE Distinguished Service Award.
3 Almost 100! Chapter History 100 Year KC Sparkler Converted to Digital Kansas City was known throughout ASHRAE for its Kansas City Sparklers. These were started in 1965 through the efforts of Cass Cassing and expanded from our chapter to the entire society. When ASHRAE turned 100, a special KC Sparkler was created and shown on February 7, This KC Sparkler is now being converted to digital and will be shown again 23 years later at our February 2017 meeting. Make sure you attend that meeting! In addition to converting the 100 year KC Sparkler (which contains 156 slides) we will be converting an additional 350 slides as well as several cassette tapes that we have. The goal is to place all of this information on One of the first items we are putting on the website is the written documentation of the chapter history from This document was created in 1989 by Cass Cassing and Roland Spencer. Look for it on the website soon! Blake Ellis Kansas City Chapter Historian Help Needed The 100 year KC Sparkler and the KC Chapter History were almost lost. They had been separated from the rest of the chapter history. Fortunately they were found in the basement of a former historian and they were returned. If you have ANY item from the KC Chapter, please get it to the Chapter Historian. I can be reached at: blakeashrae@gmail.com Are you ready to turn 100??? On January 16, 2017 the Kansas City Chapter of ASHRAE will turn 100 and we are celebrating in many ways. The first will be at our chapter meeting in February followed by a big celebration at Jack Stack on Friday evening August 4 th as part of our Region IX CRC!
4 Student Activities Announcements K-8 STEM Outreach Have you visited a child s, grandchild s, niece s or nephew s school this year to talk about engineering? Have you participated in Take a Child to Work Day? If so, let me know! The Kansas City Chapter receives points for ASHRAE members that are involved with engineering programs offered to K-8 students. These points determine the awards we receive at CRC each year. Also if you are looking for engineering actives to bring to a class room, please don t hesitate to contact me, as I have a number of resources to help get students engaged. Annual ASHRAE High School Job Shadowing Program Shortly after the first of the year we will be coordinating our annual Job Shadowing program. Let me know if you or your company are interested in showing high school juniors and seniors what a profession in engineering or contracting entails. It is just a 2 hour commitment with 4-6 students. Government Grassroots Committee Announcements Interested in Government Affairs or Grassroots Activities? Want to get involved in ASHRAE? We Want You! Contact Andrea Phillips at andrea.phillips@crbusa.com Grassroots Government Advocacy Committee is looking for volunteers to help plan a day on the hill for YEA Announcements Happy Hour Thurs.
