2 Page 2 Ryan Thompson PE, CEM January Speaker Maintenance Manager, UT Dept. of Utilities and Energy Management Ryan Thompson is the Maintenance Manager for the Department of Utilities and Energy Management at the University of Texas at Austin. He has 24 years of experience in power generation and industrial chilling systems. He received a B.S. and M.S. in mechanical engineering at UT Austin, specializing in thermal fluid systems. Ryan has worked both as a project manager and maintenance manager in his time at U.T., participating in several large infrastructure projects including the Chilling Plant #2 and Thermal Energy Storage System that supplies cooling for Texas Advanced Computing Center's Stampede supercomputer located on the Pickle Research Center Campus. January Presentation Thermal Energy Storage Project at the UT Pickle Research Center Campus The Texas Advanced Computing Center (TACC) at the University of Texas at Austin was awarded funding from the National Science Foundation to build a high performance computing facility for open science research. The facility, named Stampede, is one of the most powerful machines in the world, comprised of 160 racks of primary computer nodes and able to perform nearly 10 trillion operations per second. The 6.4 MW supercomputer is cooled by a 3,750 ton chilling plant and a one million gallon thermal energy storage system, operated by the Utilities and Energy Management department at the University of Texas at Austin. The chilling system is remotely operated from the main campus, located nine miles away from PRC. We will see an overview of the project s design and operation, including the use of optimization software and a thermal energy storage system to provide critical cooling service at the best efficiencies possible. J.J. Pickle Research Campus The J.J. Pickle Research Campus is located in Austin, Texas, and is owned and operated by the University of Texas at Austin. The campus is used by various research organizations, including Applied Research Laboratories, Bureau of Economic Geology, and the Texas Archeological Research Laboratory.
