ADC KRONE Data Centre Design Considerations

Data Centre Building Layout Data centre design should follow set rules

Data Centre Logical Layout

Data Centre Zones There are four basic designs for cabling infrastructure

Data Centre Logical Infrastructure Layout

Data Centre Product Layout

Data Centre Floor Layout

Copper Categories Copper Categories Cat 5e up to 100MHz UTP or F/UTP Cat 6 up to 250MHz - UTP or F/UTP Cat 6a up to 500MHz UTP, F/UTP or S/FTP Cat 7 up to 600MHz S/FTP Cat 7a up to 1000MHz S/FTP

Copper Categories Copper Applications 10 Base T 100 Base T 1000 Base T 10G Base T Cat 5e 100m 100m 100m N/A Cat 6 100m 100m 100m 37-55m Cat 6a 100m 100m 100m 100m Cat 7 100m 100m 100m 100m Cat 7a 100m 100m 100m 100m

Recommendations Copper Categories Cat 5e through to desk in short term buildings Cat 6 through to desk in long term buildings Cat 6a backbone, server connections, data centres Cat 7 as above Cat 7a as above

Copper Categories Fibre Applications Fibre Grade 10Base-FX 100Base-FX 1000Base-SX 10000Base-SX OM1 2000m 2000m 275m 32m OM2 2000m 2000m 550m 82m OM3 2000m 2000m 550m 300m OM3e 2000m 2000m 550m 550m 1000Base-LX 10000Base-LX OS1 2000m 2000m 2000m 2000m Application Distances

Fibre Classes Recommendations OM1 Legacy only OM2 Legacy only OM3 server connections, data centres OM3e backbone, server connections, data centres For distances greater than 550m use OS1 singlemode

Copper or Fibre The big questions is where would we use copper over fibre and vice versa

Copper and Fibre Positioning Three main areas are distance limitations, application speeds and price Copper and fibre run 10G Next generation of Ethernet (40G?) probably won t run 10G over 100m Copper and fibre now have the same lifecycle Copper is significantly cheaper than fibre There is an ongoing ROI for copper against fibre

Cost Cost of Copper vs Fibre Copper is approx 3 to 5 times cheaper than fibre Saving on copper pays for the installation 10s of times over Must consider hardware replaced every 5 years means 4 times this saving over the period of the installation

Copper and Fibre Usage Copper is the favourite to work/desk areas Copper in data centres Copper is favourite in backbones where the distance is less than 100m Multimode for Fibre Channel Multimode for between 100 and 550m Singlemode over 550m

Copper or Fibre If it was down to financials these should be the rules, however!

Copper Capacity Requirements Cat 6a and 7 in cabinets is not realistic Fibre can be achieved

Reliability and Resilience Data centre applications are: mission critical Tiers % uptime % uptime % uptime % uptime Has to be a two stage approach resilience and reliability

Resilience - Levels Level 1 design has N Base Requirement Level 2 design has N + 1 Redundancy

Resilience - Levels Level 3 design has 2N Redundancy Failure or maintenance of one complete unit will not disrupt operations

Resilient Products Split fibre patch panels separate A and B legs Lockable fibre panels

Reliability - Impedance

Cooling Hot and Cold Aisle Design Cold air passes through vented floor tiles, through the front off the cabinet and out the rear Only works when system is balanced

Cooling Hot and Cold Aisle Design Cable trays and cabling act as baffles for the cold air

Cooling Hot and Cold Aisle Design High levels of cables and containment choke the flow of cold air causing the pressure to drop

Cooling Cable Sizing Copper vs Fibre Category 6a significantly reduces the cost of the network actives and all future refreshes Fibre significantly reduces the sizing of containment and will help with cooling issues

Cooling - Fibre High level cable management produces a baffle between hot and cold aisles

Cooling Containment acting as cooling baffles

Copper Power Power requirements increase with complexity of driver chips 10G Base Tx uses 93% more power than 10 Base Tx Idle Link Active Link Rate Mbps Power (W) Power (W)

Fibre Power Fibre power requirements are very stable A 1000 Base Sx NIC consumes 3W A 1000 Base Tx NIC consumes 5W Fibre saves 40 to 50% of the power for 1000 Base Tx Fibre saves 70% of the power for 10G Base Tx Formula for Power Costs

Conclusion Power The initial costs of copper are lower than fibre Mainly due to the cost of the electronics Long term costs of fibre will be lower than copper Due to the reduced cost of power Will increase further with 10G Base Tx
