2 Introduction Jordanian Universities Network (JUNet) is a non-profit company with limited liability owned by Jordanian public universities. It was established in July 2003 as a first stage of the National Broadband Network (NBN), which was established in the light of His Majesty's initiative "Connecting Jordanians".

3 Who we are We are a private organization aimed to serve public and private universities in Jordan through shared services framework model. Our core business is managing the national broadband network of fiber optic cables interconnecting Jordanian public universities for the benefit of : cross-collaboration in elearning, research and multimedia communications. We also offer aggregated services such as Internet connectivity, software licensing, training, and communications infrastructure support.

4 Business Model and Management The operation of JUNet is managed by An Executive Director who reports to the Board of Directors. The board consists of three university presidents elected for a three-year term by the General Assembly. The General Assembly consists of all member university presidents. The operation is governed by and adheres to related bylaws of private companies in Jordan as well as own regulations and policies.

5 Management Board of Directors The Board of Directors is the governing body of JUNet, which is responsible for the mission and fiscal policies for the organization. The board consists of three representing Presidents from the founding Universities. The current board of directors are: Prof. Ali Al-Qaisi (President) - Al-Hussain Bin Talal University Prof. Omar Al-Jarrah (Vice President) - Jordan University of Science & Technology Prof. Refa at Al-Fa uri (Board Member) - Yarmouk University

6 Role Of Organization: One of the main targets of JUNet is to support goals of higher education and E-learning in Jordan, by providing information and communications technology services that meets the latest trends such as cloud computing, relying on the internal network between universities, to have the base to provide such a high-end service on, by coordinating between public universities and setting the right technical and managerial environment to accomplish their ambitions and demands.

7 JUNet Services Internet: JUNet represent Aumnia Jordan for Internet access and services for local Universities, Our service includes evaluating the best option for connectivity, bandwidth and cost optimization. Contacts us for a package offer. Microsoft Software: JUNET is an Authorized Education Reseller (AER) for Microsoft software. The program allows resellers to sell Microsoft products at academic prices to Qualified Educational Users.

9 Building the network The Ministry of Information and Communication Technology took the responsibility of establishing NBN network. The network was built using dark fibre leased from National Electricity Power Company (NEPCO) on Indefeasible Right to Use (IRU) basis. The reason for dark fibre is the freedom of selecting the transmission technology as well as the communication speed.

11 Main Targets JUNet was established to provide an advanced TCP/IP network for Jordanian universities and scientific research centres in an aim to: Provide all the necessary components needed to construct and operate the network. Establish and operate the network that interconnects Jordanian Universities to support goals of higher education and scientific research in Jordan. Provide information and communications technology services and support for the universities as needed.

12 Main Targets Design plans and policies needed for the usage of the network, and to develop common strategy for network and applications usage. Develop and implement applications that enhance the services provided using the network to support the goals of higher education and scientific research. Clasp national and international treaties in ordinance with the company goals and objectives. Acquire financial support and necessary funds, grants, and loans to achieve its goals and objectives. Develop a common strategy (standards) for network usage and applications.

13 Major Achievements: Providing quality network services to the universities including VPNs, Video Conferencing services and Providing reliable infrastructure to the libraries to provide sector-wide Library Management Services and the scientific Journals and publications and periodicals that are commonly used. Internet Consolidation including all related management services to all universities. Conducting conferences, workshops and seminars which aim to promoting technology usage in research and education Providing quality and specialized training to the technical staff in universities.

14 Agreements 1- JUNet Aumnia: Duration: Sep/2017 Sep/2019 Main Points: > Aumnia provides JUNet with a high-speed & reliable internet services. > Aumnia provides network infrastructure at several locations such as: German Jordanian University World Islamic Sciences and Education University (WISE) Tafila Technical University Al-Balqa Applied University Colleges & more.

15 Agreements 2- JUNet Next (Microsoft Licensing Solutions Provider): Duration: May/2016 May/2018 Main Points: > NEXT company covers universities needs of Microsoft software & licensing. > Next supports developing and running cloud services for Jordanian universities. > Microsoft in cooperation with Next organize training sessions and events to introduce new technologies.

16 Agreements 3- JUNet Nepco (National Electric Power Co): Duration: Sep/2014 Sep/2019 Main Points: > JUNet relies basically on NEPCO s power stations and wide-range fiber network to cover nine out of eleven universities in Jordan. > NEPCO provides monitoring and support for JUNet s core routers which are located at three different sites: - Tariq Power Station Amman - Amman North Power Station - Amman South Power Station

17 Agreement 4- JUNet -ASREN Connected to GEANT via ASREN at 1 Gbps Connected SESAME at 100 Mbps
