49 Lessons learned Safety Program is invaluable clear investment in staff and ID of safety manager many critical fall hazards previously addressed annual walk-through just completed but Disaster response / disaster recovery plans needed

50 Lesson s learned cont d Communications is everything!! Staff want to: be involved be informed be in touch Contacted ALL staff on morning of earthquake Did they need help? Was the family OK? All-staff meeting - the following morning and follow up lessons learned Everyone gets the same story Gave management chance to emphasize safety first and importance of staff keeping in touch with each other Staff and management had chance to address a lot of questions Gave staff an opportunity to raise concerns and to see where they and others would be involved in recovery Earthquake web page reestablishment of e essential for staff and user community

51 Lessons learned cont d Telephones Cell phone system overloaded home cordless phones need power most didn t work give critical staff direct connect phones for emergencies The UPS on the headquarters phone system was invaluable Power lasted until 2:00 pm Xross training was invaluable 4 critical staff off-island: Director, Software and Mechanics Group Managers and TCS engineer but we coped well Glycol cooling lines in observatory floor pose an operational risk Spares (computer disks and processors) are essential
