Tier III Data Collection What is it? The Tier III Data Collection tool is designed to measure progress for individual students before and during interventions. The tool can measure several different types of data: frequency, time sampling, intensity-duration, and permanent product data. Rate (i.e., frequency) data measures how often a behavior occurs and should be used for behaviors that happen often and can be counted discreetly (e.g., number of inappropriate comments during a 15-minute class activity). Duration data measures behaviors that happen for an extended period of time (e.g., 2-minute tantrum). Time sampling data is used to estimate behavior that is being observed over time, such as intervals where off-task behavior is displayed. In order to collect accurate duration data, it is necessary that the behavior has a clear beginning and end. Finally, permanent product data is used when there is a concrete outcome produced, such as percentage of work completion, or percent accuracy on homework, assignments, or quizzes. Who is involved? The best person to collect Tier III data is someone who can be present both before the intervention is in place and during intervention. This is often a general education or special education teacher. It is also recommended to consult staff who have experience in data collection and single-subject data, such as a school psychologist. When should it occur? Data collection should occur both before intervention (baseline) and during intervention. Baseline data is collected prior to intervention beginning. This should capture the typical behavior of the student. Thus, changes in the student s environment should be avoided during baseline data collection. Intervention data should be collected for any interventions that take place. If an intervention is amended or altered, then the data collection procedures should include documentation of the date and time the change took place and a brief description. How are data used? The Tier III data tool provides graphs of behavioral data can be used for visual analysis to measure individual student progress over time and evaluate the effectiveness of interventions used to support students at Tier III. 1
Tier III Graphing Template Guide 1. Data Tools can be accessed through the TBSP website and downloaded to your computer. Load the Tier III data tool on a secure storage location for this data (be sure to click enable buttons shown below). Mac View: PC View: AND Tip: If data tables do not fit on one page, try changing the layout to landscape (Page Layout Orientation Landscape) Rate Data..3 Duration Data.5 Time Sampling Data 7 Direct Behavior Rating Data.9 General Tips for graphing with Excel.13 2
Rate Data 1. If rate (i.e., frequency) data is being collected on discrete behaviors, begin in the Rate Data tab. 2. Next, enter the student s name and target behavior in the appropriate boxes, shown below: 3. Enter the dates for each data collection session under the Date column. Enter the frequency count of the behavior during each day of baseline. In order to calculate an accurate rate, make sure all observation sessions are the same length of time (e.g., 20-minute observation), or calculate behavior per minute in order to maintain consistency with data. After baseline is over, enter the date range in the Date Ranges row above the Baseline Average column. Shown below: 4. Continue to enter the dates for each data collection session during intervention. Frequency counts of the target behavior for the intervention should be entered into the Intervention column. This is time series data, make sure to stagger your data entry so that summary graphs are generated accurately. Do not allow 3
baseline and intervention data to overlap, instead leave intervention data cells empty during baseline (e.g., 10/1/17-10/5/17). Continue to stagger data entry to account for intervention procedure changes (e.g., 10/10/17 10/12/17, and again on 10/ /14/17). After intervention is over, enter the date range in the Date Ranges row located above the Intervention Average cell. Note: If different interventions are implemented, use a new Intervention column for each. 5. Averages for each phase (baseline and interventions) will appear under Baseline Average and Intervention Average. 6. After data has been entered, move to the Rate Graph tab to view the line graph generated from your data. The horizontal axis (x-axis) indicates the day of baseline/intervention. The vertical axis (y-axis) indicates the frequency of the behavior for that day. See example below: Select here to edit Header Interventions 1, 2, & 3 Baseline 4
Duration Data 7. If duration data is being collected, begin in the Duration Data tab. 8. Next, enter the student s name and target behavior in the appropriate boxes, shown below. 9. Enter dates for data collection sessions in the column titled Date as well as the date ranges for each phase in the row titled Date Ranges. 10. For baseline data, enter the duration of the behavior (i.e., length of time in minutes in which the behavior occurred) in the columns titled Duration under the Baseline column. 11. Enter the intervention data in the same way under the Intervention column. This is time series data, make sure to stagger your data entry so that summary graphs are generated accurately. Do not allow baseline and intervention data to overlap, instead leave intervention data cells empty during baseline (e.g., 10/1/17-10/5/17). Continue to stagger data entry to account for intervention procedure changes (e.g., 10/7/17 10/7/17). Baseline and intervention averages can be seen at the top under the corresponding column titles after all data is entered. See below: 5
12. After duration data is entered, the Duration Graph tab will display a line graph of the duration data. The horizontal axis (x-axis) indicates the day of baseline/intervention. The vertical axis (y-axis) indicates the duration of the behavior displayed that day. See example below: Select here to edit Header Interventions 1, 2, & 3 Baseline 6
Time Sampling Data 13. If time sampling data is being collected, begin in the Time Sampling Data tab. Enter the student s name and target behavior in the appropriate cells. 14. Enter dates for each data collection session in the column titled Date. 15. For baseline data, enter the number of intervals where the target behavior is exhibited in the Intervals Yes column under the larger Baseline column. Then enter the total number of intervals that were observed in the Total Intervals column under the larger Baseline column. After all baseline data has been collected, enter the date ranges for baseline above Baseline Average. After this data in entered, the percentage of intervals where the target behavior occurred will appear to the right in the Percent Intervals column under Baseline. See example below: 16. 17. Baseline and intervention averages can be seen at the top under the corresponding column titles after all data is entered. 7
Note: If different interventions are implemented, use a new Intervention column for each. Continue to stagger data entry to account for intervention changes (e.g., 10/16/17 10/10/17, 10/11/17 10/15/17, and 10/16/17 10/20/17). 18. After time sampling data is entered, the Time Sampling Graph tab will display a line graph of the data. The horizontal axis (x-axis) indicates the day of baseline/intervention. The vertical axis (y-axis) indicates the percentage of intervals where the behavior was displayed that day. See example below: Baseline Select here to edit Header Interventions 1, 2, & 3 8
Direct Behavior Ratings (DBR) Data 19. If direct behavior ratings (DBR) data is being collected, begin in the DBR Data tab. Enter the student s name and Target Behavior, Replacement Behavior, and Possible Points in the appropriate boxes. 20. Enter the dates for each data collection session in the column titled Date. 21. For baseline data, enter the DBR ratings for Target Behavior and Replacement Behavior accordingly under the Baseline column. Once all baseline data has been collected enter the date ranges in the row titled Date Ranges. 9
22. For data collected during intervention, enter the DBR ratings for Target Behavior and Replacement Behavior accordingly under the Intervention column. This is time series data, make sure to stagger your data entry so that summary graphs are generated accurately. Do not allow baseline and intervention data to overlap, instead leave intervention data cells empty during baseline (e.g., 10/1/17-10/6/17). Once all of the intervention data has been collected enter the date ranges the row titled Date Ranges. 10
23. Overall percentages for each phase (Baseline and Intervention) for each behavior (Target and Replacement) are presented as a table under the date ranges cells. With an effective intervention, target behavior scores should decrease, and replacement behavior scores should increase. 24. After data has been entered, access the line graph by selecting the DBR Graph tab. The horizontal axis (x-axis) indicates the date. The vertical axis (y-axis) indicates the percentage of points earned. Four lines are generated from the DBR data. Refer to the key on the right side of the graph. See below: 11
24. Baseline target behavior data points are presented as a solid square. Baseline replacement behavior data points are presented as a solid circle. Intervention target behavior data points are presented as an open square. Intervention replacement behavior data points are presented as an open circle. 12
