WECC Load Modeling Task Force Updates Irina Green California ISO, WECC LMTF Chair NERC Load Modeling Task Force Meeting November 1, 2017
Composite Load Model with Distributed Generation Composite Load Model Cmpldwg is for approval by the WECC Modeling and Validation Work Group in January Not approved yet by WECC. Is implemented in GE PSLF and Power World, but not in PSS/E. Will be in PSS/E in the new version It is a very simplified model, DER_A model will be more advance and more accurate. Distributed Generation (Behind the meter PV) cannot be ignored or netted with load because they are becoming widespread and have significant impact. Slide 2
Distributed Generation Model DER_A DER_A model can be stand alone and part of cmpld, also can be used as generator. It is a simplified model of a full PV plant, has 39 parameters, can be simplified a little further. Has droop, dead band, voltage control and time constants. Will be for approval in January. Hard to validate composite load models because they are aggregate. Slide 3
Modular Structure of the New Models New composite load model will be modular, thus easier to use than a model with many parameters. DER_A model represents a module that can be incorporated in the composite load model. Modular cmpld model including DER_A will be tested on a full WECC case. GE is working on the coding DER_A model and on including it in the composite load model. Expected to be completed by the end of November. Slide 4
Variable Frequency Drive Models EPRI is working on testing of variable frequency drives Did tests for tripping to determine voltage and time when trips by applying different voltage sags. Was modeled as electronic load in composite load model More variable frequency drives in the future, therefore their parameters are important Slide 5
Parameters of Composite Load Models BPA is working on determining parameters of composite load model and load composition for commercial buildings BPA conducted surveys of the Headquarters building in Portland, OR. They also did load monitoring in the building. All these studies resulted in improvement of the load models for commercial buildings. Slide 6
Next Steps in Load Modeling Dmitry Kosterev from BPA is developing next steps in load modeling. Questions include model structure of the current cmpldw composite load model and the future cmpld2 model that will be an update of the cmpldw. For the future needs, more flexible model structure is needed as well as model benchmarking. User feedback from the studies is important and will lead to the model improvements. Also important is understanding of load composition, surveys to develop model parameters and data management Slide 7
Load Composition Modeling Update PNNL (Yu Zhang) is working on the load composition modeling update. Load protection was studied, including motor response and protection in commercial buildings, and protection settings Aggregated load protection was developed from this data Price responsive load Data sources include PMU and SCADA data and statistic about customers, end-use load databases Measurements and test help to improve load models Slide 8
Benchmarking Work needed on benchmarking three programs: GE PSLF, PSS/E and Power World to have same models and same results in all three programs. Slide 9
Phase 2 of Composite Load Model Work of the California ISO on dynamic stability study results with Phase 2 (single-phase air conditioners stalling enabled) of the composite load model and comparison with Phase 1 (single-phase air conditioners stalling disabled). Model is sensitive to parameters, accurate parameters are important, including trip and re-connection settings Phase 2 results are significantly different from Phase 1 More studies are needed Slide 10
WECC Transient Voltage Recovery Criteria Need clarification of the WECC Transient Voltage Recovery Criteria. This criteria might have some ambiguous interpretation and is not very clear. It was decided to request the clarification of the criteria from WECC. It will be useful to know transient voltage criteria in other regions Slide 11
