HER CANOL DE CYMRU CENTRAL SOUTH WALES CHALLENGE Brand Guidelines Central South Wales Challenge

Intoduction The Central South Wales (CSW) Challenge brand guidelines have been provided to enable the simple and consistent production of communication materials from initial design to publication. Included are easy to use, flexible guidelines relating to the use of the CSW Challenge logo, colours and typeface, together with the recommended application of these elements across various materials explained by example. The logo was created by the Central South Consortium and is owned by the schools in Central South Wales. Schools have the full flexibility to adjust the presentation of the logo as they feel appropriate, however applying these guidelines will ensure that the CSW brand achieves maximum impact while providing a clear message across all communication materials generated. 2

Central South Consortium The Central South Consortium s shared objective developed in partnership with schools in the region is to transform educational outcomes by improving leadership and teaching and by eradicating the impact of poverty on educational outcomes. We want to do this is by building the capacity of schools to be self-improving. We want to develop a culture that embraces innovation and enables teachers and leaders to work together to improve practice in ways that are informed by research and have a positive impact on pupils achievement and progress. Our vision is to enable schools themselves to lead this work by increasingly delegating the responsibility and resources backed by a robust system of accountability. We believe that this is vital in order to secure sustainable long-term improvement in the achievement of all children and young people in the region. In everything we do we are developing this system through the Central South Wales Challenge. 3

Usage All schools and organisations involved in the Central South Wales Challenge are invited to use the CSW Challenge logo on printed or electronic material relating to communications regarding the Central South Wales self-improving system. Examples of where the logo may be used include: Marketing materials for the OLEVI Hub, Hub or Specialist Schools School websites Social media such as Twitter and Facebook School Improvement Group (SIG) materials including agendas, minutes, action plans and reports Powerpoint slides Stationary including letterheads, compliment slips and business cards Press releases Adverts including recruitment campaigns Certificates Corporate brochures and prospectuses Exhibition stands Newsletters Schools and organisations not connected to the Central South Wales Challenge must gain prior approval from the CSC Marketing and Communications Manager before using the logo (contact details on page 16). 4

Key Messages The CSW Challenge logo was designed to represent the concept of sharing knowledge. The logo is a circle of 5 people comprising a head and a body. The circle design is indicative of school partnerships and moving knowledge around the system, whilst the person in pink represents the individual in the group. The strapline for the Central South Wales Challenge is: A self improving school system: developed and led by schools across the Central South Wales region Organisations are encouraged to use the strapline where the design will allow. The website and hashtag for the CSW Challenge are and #CSWChallenge. Where possible please include these details on all publications containing the logo. 5

Logotype All of the elements that comprise the CSW Challenge logo are of a fixed size and position in relation to each other. The logo should be used as supplied and not recreated using another typeface, or with the shapes altered or replaced. The logo should not have its proportions altered it should not be squashed vertically or horizontally. The logo should have at least 12.5% (or ⅛) of its width clear on all sides. The minimum recommend reproduction size of the logo with the strapline is 80mm. This will ensure that the logo and text is legible in all applications. 12.5% (10mm) 12.5% (10mm) Minimum reproduction size and clear zone 12.5% (10mm) 12.5% (10mm) HER CANOL DE CYMRU CENTRAL SOUTH WALES CHALLENGE 80 mm 6

Logotype Below are examples of what we recommend you should not do to the logo. HER CANOL DE CYMRU CENTRAL SOUTH WALES CHALLENGE The logo should not be distorted horizontally. HER CANOL DE CYMRU CENTRAL SOUTH WALES CHALLENGE The logo should not be distorted vertically. CENTRAL SOUTH WALES CHALLENGE HER CANOL DE CYMRU The logo should not be recreated using another typeface. 7

Logotype Colourways The logo in grey, black and magenta is the preferred colourway. However, if a document is printed only in black ink, the black logo should be used. The logo should only appear over a white or pale background to ensure easy readability. On a dark or complex background, the logo should sit centred within a white panel with the dimensions of the Clear Zone mentioned on page 3. No other single colours should be used, nor should the logo to be reversed, in white, for use on a dark background. For corporate colours refer to page 9. 9 Associated Logos Central South Consortium The Central South Consortium (CSC) logo may be used in conjunction with the Central South Wales Challenge logo where appropriate. All use of the CSC logo must be approved by the Consortium s Marketing and Communications Manager before publication (contact details can be found on page 16). Council Logos The logos of the five local authorities, in alphabetical order, may be used in conjunction with the CSW Challenge logo. The five logos must have equal size and spacing. All use of council logos must be approved by their respective communications teams. Please refer to the brand guidelines for the council and CSC logos for further information regarding their use. 9

Associated Logos (cont.) Hub Schools The logos of the Hub Schools, in alphabetical order, may be used in conjunction with the CSW Challenge logo. The logos must have equal size and spacing. All use of school logos must be approved by their respective headteachers and follow their brand guidelines. Examples of Hub School logos 10

Colours The Central South Wales Challenge palette is composed of magenta, grey and black. Magenta should always be the dominant colour. The CSW Challenge magenta can be adjusted to a tint of 15% to provide further design options. Magenta Spot: Process Magenta Process: C=0 M=100 Y=0 K=0 RGB: R=238 G=0 B=140 Hex: #EE008C Grey Spot: Pantone 437 C Process: C=60 M=50 Y=50 K=20 RGB: R=102 G=102 B=102 Hex: # Black Spot: Pantone 5605 C Process: C=60 M=60 Y=40 K=100 RGB: R=0 G=0 B=0 Hex: # % magenta tint 11

Graphical Elements To support the graphic design of publications related to the Central South Wales Challenge the logo can adjusted in the following ways. No text 15% transparency Images placed inside the shapes 12

Typeface The CSW Challenge logo typeface is MS Reference Sans Serif in small capitals. MS Reference Sans Serif is available in most software packages including Microsoft Word. The small caps options can be applied in Word under the font settings. Only the size of the font may be adjusted. The font should not be made bold, italic or any other formatting applied. Special effects including drop shadows, 3D type, and glows should not be used. The MS Reference Sans Serif typeface should only be used in the CSW Challenge logo and primary headings in publications. MS Reference Sans Serif ABCDEFGHIJKLMNOPQRSTUVWXYZ abcdefghijklmnopqrstuvwxyz Example text with small caps: The Central South Wales Challenge 13

Typeface Variations Calibri in black is the preferred typeface for the body text of CSW Challenge publications. Calibri is available in a variety of weights and be used according to need. Bold, italic, underline, CAPITALS and other types of formating can be used. For sub headings or to emphasise text the colour can be changed to either the CSW Challenge magneta or grey. It is important that once a style is chosen for sub headings and emphasising text that the style is applied consistently throughout the publication. Calibri and MS Reference Sans Serif should be the only two fonts typically used in CSW Challenge documents. However, where these fonts are not available, please use Arial as the default font. Calibri ABCDEFGHIJKLMNOPQRSTUVWXYZ abcdefghijklmnopqrstuvwxyz Example text: Central South Wales Challenge Sample document using a primary heading, sub headings and body text: Central South Wales Challenge What are the key ideas behind the challenge? Our shared objective developed in partnership with schools in the region is to transform educational outcomes by improving leadership and teaching and by eradicating the impact of poverty on educational outcomes... How do we build a self improving school system? Improved school self-evaluation and improvement planning are critical to the development of a self-improving system... 14

Text Size and Legibility Part of our philosophy is inclusiveness. Therefore materials should be accessible to as many people as possible. In order to facilitate this we have put together some simple guides on size of type and legibility. Text sizes For main body copy we recommend using a minimum of 12pt or larger. The aim is to put all important text in at least this size and there should be as little small print as possible. Legibility In order to keep communications legible and accessible the following points should be considered: Colour Contrasting text from its background is easier to read. When printing standard documents on white make sure the main body text is black or white over a dark colour. Line spacing The space between each line of text and between paragraphs should be set to at least 125% - 130% of the point size that is, 12 point text should have a line spacing of points so it is clear to read and understand. Ease of understanding use plain language, avoid the use of jargon, and explain all acronyms, or provide a glossary of terms. Styling restrict the use of bold and italic versions of fonts to emphasise important points, as variations from the normal font weights are inherently more difficult to read. Consistency Estyn has a writing guide at publication/6852.3/estyn-writing-guide/ which, while not universally applicable, provides useful guidance and which should, generally, be followed. 15

Welsh Language In all cases for reasons of equality, the Welsh and English versions of any publication should be equal in every way. The English must occupy the same amount of space as the Welsh i.e. if the English is in Calibri size 14 bold, the Welsh must be the same and not less. The preferred style of layout for documents is columnar where the Welsh and the English are displayed side by side (Welsh in the left column and English on the right). Where there are graphics and images (and often captions, headings and dates) this means they can be shared. Failing that, the document may be produced back to back (known as tilt and turn). Leaflets, where they carry a lot information, are probably best set out in this way. If separate English and Welsh versions are published they must appear simultaneously, be distributed together and be equally accessible. For support regarding the Welsh language in publications please contact the Central South Consortium Marketing and Communications Manager (contact details on page 16). 16
