SOFTWARE/ACCESS REQUIRED Active CSUDH account Adobe Creative Cloud External HD (500 GB, minimum Firewire 400 and USB 2) COURSE DESCRIPTION This course offers instruction and practice in fundamental sound recording techniques, sound design theories, and audio production workflows. Students will learn how to record and direct ADR, Foley, ambience, walla-walla, sound effects, and VO narration sessions. Using video camcorders and DSLR cameras, students will learn how to: 1) record audio on location using Boom Mic systems and Lav microphones; 2) edit pre-recorded audio using applications such as Adobe Premiere, Adobe Audition, and Pro Tools. This course is designed to prep DMA-TV students for projects in the DMA 322, 325, 327, 346, and 499 courses. Students will spend a considerable amount of time outside of class to complete the five projects for this course.

2 COURSE LEARNING OBJECTIVES By the end of the course students will be able to: 1. Install Lav Mics and set proper audio level on camera for recording seated interviews. 2. Operate Boom Mic systems and set proper level for recording dialogue in drama scenes. 3. Setup Recording Studio Mics and set proper level for VO, ADR, Foley, and walla-walla. 4. Setup and record live audio on location using an external digital audio recorder. 5. Sync audio tracks from the external audio recorder to camera-original tracks on a timeline. 6. Use software to record, edit, mix, and output audio files. 7. Use Mixing Console to input microphone, set proper level, and ride gain. 8. Direct a VO Narration recording session with a professional narrator. 9. Direct an ADR Session with actors and sync the ADR to video using Pro Tools and VocAlign. 10. Normalize uneven levels of dialogue or interviews in a soundtrack via dialogue editing. 11. Direct a Foley Session and sync sound effects to video. 12. Direct a Walla-Walla Session to create ambience, applause, and laugh tracks. 13. Mix a Composite Soundtrack of dialogue, ambience, sfx, and music to proper balance in a documentary or drama sequence. 3 CLASS PROJECTS DESCRIPTIONS Individual and co-producer (team-based) projects: 1. External Audio Recorder Project (Individual Project) This project focuses on incorporating the Tascam audio digital recorder as an independent audio source separate from the main camera. Each student will record a brief drama scene using the boom mic system. The boom mic audio will be recorded simultaneously on both the DSLR camera and the Tascam audio recorder. In post production, each student will sync the Tascam audio to the edited sequence on the timeline. 1. Set proper audio level to simultaneously record boom mic on DSLR camera and external digital recorder. 2. Sync audio track from external digital recorder to camera audio track on timeline. 3. Edit video/audio using Adobe Premiere/Audition 2. PSA Narration Recording Project (Co-Producer Team from the DMA 322 course) Record a professional narrator s performance of a tag line for a 30-second PSA using four different emotional tones in the delivery. Sync the best take of your narrator to the video or title card of your PSA. 1. Direct a narrator to give the appropriate performance 2. Connect mic to mixer and set proper audio level 3. Edit video/audio using Adobe Premiere/Adobe Audition 3. Paella Sound Design Project (Individual Project) Create the sound design for the Paella Drama Skit. The sound design must include ADR, ambience, sound effects, music, laughter and applause track mixed to proper balance and synced to the video. 1. Mix to proper balance an 8-Channel soundtrack for a drama sequence 2. Troubleshoot lip-sync issues with the dialogue and the video 3. Edit video/audio using Adobe Premiere

4 4. Documentary Sound Design Project (Co-Producer Team from the DMA 325 course) Create the sound design for a documentary project. The sound design must include VO narration, talking head interviews, B-Roll camera ambience, and music. 1. Mix to proper balance an 8-Channel soundtrack for a documentary project 2. Properly install a lav mic on interviewees and set proper audio level on camera 3. Edit video/audio using Adobe Premiere 5. Digital Audio Editing Project (Individual Project) Students will learn 5 basic and commonly requested audio editing techniques. Integrating Adobe Premiere and Adobe Audition into a production workflow. 1. Noise Reduction 2. Telephone FX 3. Distance FX 4. Looping Music FX 5. Audio Sync techniques 1. Master the 5 common audio techniques 2. Integrate Adobe Premiere and Adobe Audition 3. Create, Edit and Process audio files GRADING CRITERIA Your final score is determined by your Project and Attendance points. PROJECT POINTS - (100 Total Points possible) The following points for each project will be added together to render the student s final grade: On co-producer projects, each student in the team receives the same score pts External Audio Recorder Project (Individual) pts PSA Narration Recording Project (Co-Producer) pts Paella Sound Design Project (Individual) pts Documentary Sound Design (Co-Producer) pts Digital Audio Editing Project (Individual) ATTENDANCE POLICY Attendance is taken every class meeting. 2 points will be deducted from each student s total points for each absence or tardy.

COMPUTER/INFORMATION LITERACY EXPECTATIONS FOR STUDENTS ENROLLED IN THIS CLASS Students in this class are expected to: 1. Use the university system (Toromail) 2. Use Blackboard 3. Use a word processing program for writing assignments (e.g., Microsoft Word). 4. Be able to access assigned websites through the internet 5. For additional information about computing on campus, including tutorials, students should go to: CLASS ENVIRONMENT Students should minimize potential classroom disruptions by: Making sure all cell phones and other personal electronic devices are turned off or in silent mode during class. NO FOOD or DRINKS! Consumption of food and beverages in our recording studio and production labs is NOT allowed at any time. Food and beverages must be stored outside of class and labs. Any disruptive behavior will result in the student being asked to leave for the duration of the class period.
