4 If You Need Help If you are having trouble using Avid Thunder: 1. Retry the action, carefully following the instructions given for that task. It is especially important to check each step of your workflow. 2. Check this ReadMe file for the latest information that might have become available after the documentation was published. Also check online for the most up-to-date ReadMe because the online version is updated whenever new information becomes available. 5 Compatibility with Prior Versions If you are upgrading your Thunder application software to version or later from a version prior to 7.0, you must also upgrade your SQL database to version 12 before you install your new Thunder software. This is done by running the Avid-supplied script called UpdateDatabase.sql located on the Thunder CD in the Samples and Scripts\SQL Scripts folder. Running the Avid-Supplied Script to Update your SQL Database on the SQL Server To run the Avid-supplied script to update your SQL database: 1. Start Query Analyzer (part of the SQL Server software) by selecting one of the following: t (For SQL 2000) Select Start > Programs > Microsoft SQL Server > Query Analyzer t (For SQL 2005 Express) Select Start > Programs > Microsoft SQL Server 2005 > SQL Server Management Studio Express 2. Connect to the server that you have set up, and log in by typing the password shark. 3. Select File > Open and navigate to the UpdateDatabase.sql script on the Thunder CD in the Samples and Scripts\SQL Scripts folder and click Open. 4. Do one of the following: t (For SQL 2000) Select shark from the DB: menu. t (For SQL 2005 Express) Type shark and click Connect, and make sure the word shark appears in the DB window. 5. Click the Execute Query button. When the script is done, it should return one of these messages, The command(s) completed successfully. or Query executed successfully. If the result is different, contact Avid Customer Support. 6. Close the window. This concludes the SQL Database update. 5

6 QuickTime Support Thunder enables you to import and create Apple QuickTime.mov files. Before you import.mov files, you must install QuickTime from the Apple web site. QuickTime is not supplied by Avid. Avid Thunder supports Apple QuickTime version QuickTime Pro is not required. To download QuickTime, see Upgrading Thunder XL and LT Legacy Systems When upgrading Thunder XL and LT legacy systems, it is recommended that you install the latest release on top of the previously installed version of Thunder. Do not uninstall the last release. Instead, do an install of the latest software over the previous release. Upgrading Systems with a Ware Raid Controller Thunder systems that use a Ware Raid controller require double buffering. This feature is added through a registry key, which you need to install. The installation file, along with related files, is in the 3ware_9550_buffer_reg folder at the top-level of the Thunder v7.1.5 installation CD. c This folder contains the following files: enable_buffering_nonaligned_xfers.reg: the registry key installation file disable_buffering_nonaligned_xfers.reg: the registry key removal file readme_reg_key.txt: a file containing a link to relevant article in the Avid Customer Knowledge Base. This installation is only required when upgrading systems that include a Ware Raid controller. It is not required when upgrading other systems or when installing a new system. To determine the make and model of the controller: 1. Right-click My Computer and select Manage. 2. Select Device Manager. 3. Select SCSI and Raid controllers. If the controller is listed as the following, you need to install the registry key: AMCC 3ware 9550SX SATA RAID Controller 6

7 To install the double buffering registry key: 1. Insert the Thunder v7.1.5 installation CD. 2. Open the 3ware_9550_buffer_reg folder and double-click the following file: enable_buffering_nonaligned_xfers.reg 3. Restart the Thunder system. In previous versions, after importing a clip or still in Thunder whose name had uppercase letters using the Watch Folder, all uppercase letter converted to lowercase. In this version, the original file name with uppercase letters will remain the same after importing it into the Thunder database and will not be converted to lowercase. This new Pbus trigger has been added to allow a true recue of the currently loaded clip instead of having to press rewind/recue from the Thunder user interface. This board is shipped in new Thunder systems, replacing the TARGA SD board. New SD/HD Hybrid systems use a single Corsica SD/HD video board. The Corsica SD/HD video board records and plays MPEG-2 MXF (I-Frame) clips. Thunder now includes the ability to transcode clips on import to the required MPEG-2 MXF. 9

10 Corsica-based Thunder systems support 20-bit audio for SD and 24-bit audio for HD. MPEG-2 MXF (I-Frame) Format (for Clip Playback and Encoding) Clip playback and encoding on Thunder systems based on the Corsica hardware is restricted to MPEG-2 MXF (I-frame). All clips on these systems must reside in an MXF database. Thunder transcodes all clips that are copied between databases or imported. In order to do this properly, Thunder databases need to have the proper codec types selected when they are created. This is done by selecting MPEG-2 from the codec list box. Select DV;MPEG-2 if your Thunder can encode/decode MPEG-2 and DV25. Switching Between SD and HD Formats on Thunder Hybrid Systems If your system is a Thunder Hybrid (HY), you can work with both standard-definition (SD) and high-definition (HD) formats on the same system, and switch between SD and HD formats. To switch from one format to another: 1. Select File > Preferences > Channel Configuration. 2. Select the desired SD or HD video standard from the Video Standard list. 3. Click OK and wait 2 minutes to ensure that all settings are saved. 4. Restart the system. The system launches in the selected video standard. Showing Properties for a Database File Thunder now enables you to view properties for a selected database. To view the properties of a database: t Right-click a database in the Database tree view and select Properties. The Database Properties dialog box opens. For more information, see the Avid Thunder Products User s Guide. 10

11 Saving Separate User Preferences for SD and HD Settings For Thunder Hybrid systems, selecting this new option lets you save one set of user preferences for standard-definition (SD) settings and a different set for high-definition (HD) settings. This feature allows you to have different default databases, watch folders, and protocols when switching between SD and HD. You can turn this feature on or off. To allow separate settings for SD and HD: t Select File > Advanced > Separate SD/HD Settings. A check mark next to the Separate SD/HD settings menu item indicates that the feature is turned on, letting you have different sets of user preferences for HD and SD. To disable separate settings for SD and HD: t Select File > Advanced > Separate SD/HD settings again. The check mark next to the Separate SD/HD settings menu item is no longer there, and the feature is turned off. Issues Resolved in Thunder Version The following issues were resolved with Thunder between versions and : This version of Thunder contains a new Corsica Driver Toolkit v1_9_d16, which fixes the audio drop out issue on Kipro. Issues Resolved in Thunder Version The following issues were resolved with Thunder between versions and 7.1.9: This version of Thunder contains a new Corsica Driver Toolkit v1_9_d14. The Thunder HD Input Audio Noise issue has been fixed. In previous versions, an audio clicking noise was heard when Thunder received audio and ancillary data (such as ATC) from the same source. The fix includes changes to the FPGA firmware. (UDevC ) The timecode synchronization issue that occurred when using Thunder Sequence to play a short clip, that on occasion, caused the following clip to be skipped has been fixed. The clip now always completes playing. (UDevC ) Issues Resolved in Thunder Version The following issues were resolved with Thunder between versions and 7.1.8: 11

12 Thunder now contains multi-language EULA support. (UDevC ) In the Open with PostDeko function, the backgrounds in graphics are no longer showing up black in PostDeko.This issue is fixed in an upcoming release of PostDeko (v8.3.5 or higher) (UDevC ; UDevC ) The "fail to save to the same still" part of the Thunder-Postdeko issue has been fixed. (UDevC ) When using an ODBC database, the operation of modifying a Deko graphic no longer fails with an error "Thunder reports: Can't open still" when saving back into Thunder from Deko. (UDevC ) Issues Resolved in Thunder Version n The following issues were resolved with Thunder between versions and 7.1.3: The issue where clip transitions and clip to still transitions started too early has been fixed by adding the capability of adjusting the pre roll back a number of frames for clips and stills being run in a sequence. No UDev - Escalation The following Thunder HD issues have been fixed: (UDevC ) Escalation 42185, 43855, In Thunder HD, the Preview channel has been fixed to no longer show a 10% higher level. - In Thunder HD, the video level has been fixed to no longer change when importing a Targa sequence versus one Targa cell. - In Thunder HD, the Frame Grab luminance problem has been fixed. 13

14 In Thunder HD, the Show Picture tool was previously unable to fully present a still picture. The tool has been fixed and now provides functionality to Scale-to-fit within the window. (UDevC ) Escalation 43692, The issue where Thunder SQL script did not allow use of Unicode in metadata has been fixed. There have been changes to the makeall.sql script. Follow the instructions for creating a new database in the Thunder help. If you have an existing database that you would like to update, run the update_unicode.sql script on your existing Shark database. This can be found on the Thunder CD in the update_unicode.sql script. This script can be found by selecting Samples and Scripts > SQL Scripts > makeall.sql. (UDevC Escalation 43096) The issues where, during playback of a Thunder sequence, one of the elements flashed briefly at the wrong time has been fixed. (UDevC Escalation 43771) Animated Logo (Bug) Creator Broken - Layout area is displayed as a whole with the entire area shown as dark grey/black in all places where the picture doesn't appear has been fixed. (UDevC Escalation 42706) Thunder had an audio processing problem that prevented audio from playing correctly through certain audio devices. This has been fixed. SDI output from Thunder contained occasional glitches, causing noticeable flickers on output monitors. This has been fixed. (UDevC ) Color conversion did not always work in SD. This has been fixed. (UDevC ) All logging files now include milliseconds. (UDevC ) Change default location for log files to: C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Avid\Support\Logs\<Application>. (UDevC ) Thunder in Browse mode has been fixed to now allow for HD video standards in channel configuration. (UDevC ) Issues Resolved in Thunder Version The following issues were resolved with Thunder between versions and 7.1.2: Thunder might not have been passing through Audio Control packets. This has been fixed. Thunder might not have been able to play embedded audio from certain devices. This has been fixed. Footprints41860 Thunder might have failed the eye pattern test. This has been fixed. The problem where the passthrough key would look jagged in HD has been fixed. (UDevC ) 14

15 The problem where PbusII recall does not recall TRN and TRN Duration values has been fixed. (UDevC ) The problem where Pbus control does not work correctly with the Recue or Recall commands has been fixed. (UDevC ) Added Unicode support for meta data field in the ODBC database.(udevc ) To enable Unicode, do the following: a. Close all Thunder applications, including any Browsers b. For systems with: - SQL Server 2000, select Start > Programs > Microsoft SQL Server > Enterprise Manager. - SQL Server 2005 Express, select Start > Programs > Microsoft SQL Server 2005 > SQL Server Management Studio Express. c. Connect to the SQL Server that you have set up, and log in by typing the password shark. d. Execute the following SQL queries: - alter table dbinfo add SQL_UTF8_STRINGS int - go - update dbinfo set SQL_UTF8_STRINGS=1 e. Enable the language desired on the Thunder system. f. Open one (and one only) Thunder application. g. Open the database in Thunder. h. Rebuild the database by selecting File > Advanced > Rebuild database. i. Test the result by changing the User field on the General tab for the Properties of a clip or still. Issues Resolved in Thunder Version The following issues were resolved with Thunder between versions 7.1 and 7.1.1: Removed the error message regarding identical watch folder paths if the paths are empty. Fixed the crash that involved getting the properties of a DNA object. ( ) Applying a filter no longer double-shapes the key. ( ) Pressing '+' on key pad now increments properly with drop frame timecode. ( ) 15

16 The shortening of clips when importing MXF files into TMF has been fixed. ( ) ( ) Importing long GOP files into an MPEG database now preserves GOP structure. ( ) Thunder Browse now allows using database in/out points for sequence playout. ( ) Importing a file now preserves the audio channel count and sample width. ( ) ODBC databases can now be opened in ThunderX/Thunder Select. ( ) The login and password for creating an ODBC database are now lower case. ( ) The crash that generated a proxy in an ODBC database that has a different video standard from the database originally opened has been fixed. ( ) The Protocol Setup window has been changed to only allow one channel to be assigned to MOS. This reduces confusion, since Thunder can only talk to one MOS system. ( ) The Preview window has been fixed to now show the correct frame after playing, pausing, and then stopping. ( ) Importing files with audio formats that do not match the database audio formats no longer crashes Thunder. ( ) The issue in ThunderCOM where the Louth protocol was incorrectly transmitting the number of database items to the controller has been fixed. The intermittent hang that occurred when replacing the key of one clip with the video of another has been fixed. ( ) The issue where more than one instance of Thunder could be opened has been fixed. Now, only one instance of Thunder can be opened. ( ) Fixed the export of TMF clips with key to MXF. ( ) Thunder in Demo mode now allows channel configuration changes. ( ) The Watch folder has been fixed so that files imported via a watch folder now have the video standard checked to make sure it matches the database. ( ) Fixed the proxy playback video defects in 720p60. ( ) Fixed the import of TGA files as an animation series. ( ) Eliminated hang copying TMF files. ( ) The crash that occurred when accessing a.g file via DNA when.g is also part of the file's path has been fixed. ( ) The process of copying MXF clips with 24 bit audio has been fixed. ( ) Special Notes Following is a list of special notes that are helpful to know before using Avid Thunder. If you have purchased the Security Admin option, and are installing it for the first time, the default password is Password. 17

18 Limitations 18 Following is a list of limitations found in Avid Thunder: After an uninstall of the current Thunder and Inflexion, and then an install of the same version, there is an error message popup of a missing DLL. This is an issue with the uninstaller and does not affect the application functionality. If the application is installed on a clean image or if it is installed on top of an older version without uninstalling, the popup does not appear. The popup also states re-installing the application may fix the problem. (UDevC ) When trying to record an HD channel, there is an instability in the system that might results in some audio and video glitches if you start recording within 10 seconds of changing the mode. The workaround is to wait 10 seconds after changing the mode before starting the capture. (UDevC ) Running Thunder HD v7.0.4 and playing clips with key back to back in quick succession may cause errors in AFAP Manager. If this occurs, uninstall the AFAP Manager using Add/Remove Programs in the Control Panel, then run the Thunder setup. When running in 720p and capturing video to a clip file, the first capture might generate corrupted frames. However, subsequent captures perform correctly. The workaround for this issue is to first do a test capture in 720p. IBP with key might not play. In order to remedy this, try using DV 25 or I-Frame MPEG-2 (SD) for key. This limitation does not apply for Thunder HD systems as I-Frame is used. The Replace key with luma function does not work with MPEG-2 IBP or IBBP formats in Thunder MX. In order to use this function you must use I-frame MPEG-2 or DV 25 formats. No security found error message when running Thunder Browse. There are two types of dongles (HASP and Sentinel). If your Thunder system is older than 6.1 or 6.0, you might have the Sentinel dongle. If that is the case, when you install the Thunder software, you will get an error message saying No security found when you run Thunder Browse. The workaround for this is to install the Sentinel Install driver from the Thunder CD. For older Thunder SD systems that are upgrading to or higher software, and have a motherboard that capable of using Hyperthreading functionality, make sure that Hyperthreading is enabled on the system. This is usually accomplished by going into the BIOS and selecting Enable Hyperthreading. Contact Avid Technical Support if you have any questions on how to do this. There are some issues with not having enough memory to load Cel Animations (in the Thunder application, Cel Animations are called a Bug Clips ). Each Thunder channel can load two Cel Animations. This allows you to cue a new Cel while an existing one is

19 playing on air. Since there is a fixed amount of memory on the board, it is possible to get into a situation where a new Cel can't be loaded because the current Cel has taken up too much memory. Version 7.0 includes a new feature that frees up more memory by unloading the on-air Cel. This is called Unload Bug Layer. A good rule of thumb is to follow the 200x200x200 rule (200 pixels wide by 200 pixels high by 200 frames) when creating a bug clip. Unload Bug Layer does not distinguish between cued bugs and Pgm bugs. If you create a sequence where each event has a different bug, and play the sequence, when you right-click on the MiniMonitor for the Pgm event and select Unload Bug Layer, both the Pgm and cued bugs are emptied. No Security Key detected on ThunderBrowse on Deko Hybrid. After installing or repairing ThunderBrowse on the Deko Hybrid, the security key is not being detected during the first program start of ThunderBrowse. After the second start of ThunderBrowse, the security key will be detected. ThunderMX SD is limited to a maximum of 15 Mb/sec when encoding to MPEG-2 with a GOP length of 15. Due to disk limitations, when recording video and key on a channel in HD, the second channel cannot be used for ingest or playout. Thunder does not support UNICODE for the database name. When changing formats between SD and HD, Thunder requires a minute between closing Thunder and restarting, or a second restart will be needed. 19

20 Documentation Changes The following notes describe documentation changes and additions: The following information in the Avid On-Air Graphics Setup and Configuration Guide is incorrect: - Turning the system off. On page 47, the guide states to press the Power button for 4 seconds. Instead, select Start > Shutdown to turn off the system. - Purchasing Additional Drives. On page 75, the guide states the following: Contact Avid Customer Support for information on purchasing additional hard drives for the workstation. Additional hard drives are not available. - Board Numbers for Diagnostic Tests. On page 131, the bullets for Step 3 incorrectly call out the BOARD numbers. Channel A or Channel 1 is actually BOARD_1, not BOARD_0 as stated in the guide. Channel B or Channel 2 is BOARD_0, not BOARD_1 as stated in the guide. The Avid Thunder Products User s Guide incorrectly states that in order to view background tasks, you should right-mouse click on the progress bar to see the Background Task Status dialog box. To view background tasks, left-mouse click on the Progress bar. When installing Thunder Browse software, make sure to turn off virus protection on that system. This enables the files to register properly. A new Pbus trigger has been added to allow a true recue of the currently loaded clip instead of having to press rewind/recue from the Thunder user interface. Using Triggers in Thunder Thunder currently has seven Triggers defined: Play Pause Stop (unloads the codec) Re-cue (cues the clip that was last referenced by a PBus2 RECALL command) Jog Forward moves 1 frame forward Jog Backwards moves 1 frame backwards Re-cue (New) cues the currently loaded clip The control device may send new commands before the prior command is complete (for example Recall clip and play a clip could be RECALL 12 + TRIGGER 1 ). Thunder will buffer up to 10 commands and execute them as quickly as possible. 20

21 The Thunder protocol for each channel may be controlled by a serial port, or linked to a Thunder channel that is controlled by a serial port. For example, Channel 1 can be controller by COM10, and Channel 2-8 can be linked to Channel 1. Any data coming into Channel 1 will also be sent to all channels linked to this channel. The control channel can be any channel and is not limited to Channel 1. The Device ID will determine which channel(s) executes the commands. The complete set of Pbus triggers in Thunder is described in the following table: Pbus Triggers in Thunder Trigger Name Trigger Number Description PBUS2_TRIGGER_PLAY: 1 Plays the currently loaded item, unless another item is loaded in the Cue channel, then the play command will play the item in the cue channel (similar to pressing F12 from the keyboard) PBUS2_TRIGGER_PAUSE: 2 Pauses the item currently playing in the playout channel. PBUS2_TRIGGER_STOP: 3 Stops and unloads the item currently playing in the playout channel. The output resulting will then either be last frame or black depending on the channel configuration setting. PBUS2_TRIGGER_RECUE: 4 Re-loads the last item recalled via the pbus recall command, then cues that item. PBUS2_TRIGGER_JOJ_FORWARD: 5 Jog Forward PBUS2_TRIGGER_JOG_REVERSE: 6 Jog Reverse PBUS2_TRIGGER_RECUE_NEW 7 Re-cues the currently loaded item in the playout channel. In addition to providing a true recue command in Thunder, you can still use the existing re-cue trigger option. 21
