1 Student Guide for Integrating Media in Classroom We have partnered with Kaltura to deliver a video application that opens up a whole new set of media-rich teaching possibilities from integration of video materials, to video assignments, and sharing of student and faculty video content, all fully integrated within the Blackboard Learn platform. You can upload, publish, search, and reuse videos across various courses. NOTE: It is recommended that videos remain under 1GB (file size). If it is necessary to make videos longer, you may decrease the video quality or record multiple, shorter segments. A DSL or better internet connection is required. Our goal is to make those materials accessible to everyone regardless of disability. You may be asked to provide a transcript of your video for the use of your peers in the event that they cannot watch or hear the videos due to a disability. Alternately, it is the responsibility of students with disabilities to request appropriate accommodations from the Office of Disability Services at your University within the first week of the course start date. 1

2 Personal Media Library With this new system you can upload, store, share, and manage your media library. From your media library, you can assign specific media-items to a course or set of courses, post to Discussions, Assignments, etc. Wherever you see the Blackboard Text editor, you can now mix media with text. You can use a variety of means to contribute media to your library: upload a media file from your desktop record from a webcam, or capture your interaction on the screen. Mashup Tool The Kaltura Media tools are available throughout the course via the Mashup Tool in any text editor within the course. If instructed to do so, students can add media via the Mashup Tool in: Assignments submission Discussion boards Messages Blogs Wikis Choose Kaltura Media from the Mashup Tool menu. Make sure text editor is turned ON If you are adding new media to Blackboard (never been uploaded by you to Blackboard before), follow the instructions outlined in the Adding New Media section. To search for media that has previously been uploaded to Blackboard, follow the instructions outlined in the Searching for Your Media section. 2

3 Adding New Media From the Mashup Tool, choose Kaltura Media. Then click on Upload media or record from webcam link. You can either upload a video from your computer from the Upload tab or click on the Webcam tab to record a video from your webcam. To upload a new video from your computer, click on the Browse button from the Upload tab. Browse your computer for the desired file and click on the Save button. When you are directed back to the Upload Videos window, you may add additional videos by repeating the previous steps. Click on the Upload! button to proceed. This may take several minutes depending on the size of the file. Once the file(s) have been uploaded, click on the Next button. 3

4 Browse your computer for the desired file, select it and then click the Save button. All commonly used file formats will be accepted up to 2GB. Once the video(s) have been uploaded, you can add a Title, Tags, and Description. The title will default to the file name but you will likely need to change it to something more descriptive. Tags are one word or short descriptions of your video that will allow you to easily locate your video later on. Tags are optional but recommended. The Description is also optional but will provide viewers a preview of your video in textual form. Recording a New Video from Your Webcam From the Mashup Tool, choose Kaltura Media. Then click on Upload media or record from webcam link. Click on the Webcam tab. You may receive an Adobe Flash Player Settings pop-up asking for access to your webcam. Click on Allow. 4

5 You may need to select your webcam device from the drop-down menu. When you are ready to begin your recording, click on the Record button. When finished, click on Stop. You may play your recording to make sure that you are happy with it. If you would like to re-record, click on the Record button again to begin. Once you are happy with the recording, click the Next button. You may then fill in the Title, Tags, and Description fields and click on Next. 5

6 Video Recording Tips Eliminate as much background noise as possible. When recording a video with your webcam, try to make eye contact with the camera instead of yourself on the screen. Prepare a script of what you will say. This may come in handy if you need to provide a transcript of your video. Make sure that you have sufficient background lighting. Alternately, if you are recording near a window, it may be best to close blind/curtains to avoid too much light. Always watch and listen to your video prior to uploading it for all to see. Video downloads have been disabled. Therefore, you or anyone else will be able to download a copy of any video that is available in Blackboard. Searching for Your Media If you had previously uploaded the desired video to Blackboard, there is no need to upload the video again. From the Mashup Tool, you will have the option to select that video from your personal media library. Adding Previously Uploaded Media to a Text Editor Wherever you see the Blackboard Text Editor, you can add media using the Mashup button in the Text Editor. 6
