1 Overview The purpose of this document is to serve as a for uploading videos using the Blackboard Kaltura Building Block. The purpose of using Kaltura Building Block The Kaltura Video Building Block for Blackboard allows faculty, staff or instructors to upload, publish, create clips from existing video content, and share videos directly from within your Blackboard course. Quick Reference Setting -up Kaltura in your Blackboard Course: Under Course Management / Control Panel click on Customization Tool Availability. Scroll down the page, and select checkboxes for the Kaltura tools Next, check mark the Media Gallery to make available. Format Revised: 02/20/2015 Touro University California Page 1 of 9

3 The Course Gallery The Course Gallery is a searchable and sortable display of all video contact associated with a Blackboard course, and allows instructors to add new video content ( upload or record from webcam) You can access the Course Gallery from the Course Tools area in the Control Panel: Note: By default, videos are hidden to students in the Gallery, until the instructor makes them visible. Adding video content to the Course Gallery To upload videos to the Kaltura video platform from your desktop 1. Go the Course Gallery 2. 5 There are two ways to add media 6. Add media: Upload browse to the location for prerecorded videos Note: You can select multiple files at once 7. Add media: My Content Select videos that have already been uploaded Format Revised: 02/20/2015 Touro University California Page 5 of 9
6 8. Add media: Webcam You can create a recording Recording directly from your webcam The Kaltura plug-in allows you to record directly from your webcam. This is useful if you want to elaborate on lecture materials, explain assessments task, or give feedback. To record a video directly from your webcam, first ensure that you have a webcam and microphone 1. Go to the Course Gallery 2. Click on Add Media and Upload Media or record from webcam Format Revised: 02/20/2015 Touro University California Page 6 of 9
7 3. The following upload screen should appear 4. Click on Browse and locate the video file or files that you want to upload 5. Click Upload 6. You will see a progress bar indication that the video is being uploaded. 7. Once the upload is completed, click Next 8. You can now add tags and a description, which can be used when searching for a video in the Course Gallery. 9. Click Next 10. The video will now be processed, transcoded and optimized for use within Blackboard. The video will now appear within the Course Gallery. It may take a few more minutes for the video to process fully. You will see that the newly added video is marked as Hidden, until you decide that it should be available to student within the Course Media widget. 8 Creating a screen recording The Kaltura plug-in allows you to create a screen recording from your desktop. This is useful if you want to record a voice-over to a powerpoint slideshow, or demonstrate the use of a particular software (e.g. Blackboard). To screen record with voice, first ensure that you have a microphone. The screen recording application requires that you have java installed on your machine. You may be prompted to (a) install java or (b) update java on your machine. 1. Go to the Course Gallery 2. Click on Add Media and Record your screen 3. Depending on your browser, you may see some warnings asking if you want to run the application. Also the first time you run the recorder it may take a little longer to load. 4. When the recorder appears, you ll see area defined by dashed black lines, with a Kaltura message in the centre, and your screen recorder button in the bottom left. 9 5. Resize the framed area so that it fits around the area you want to record, bringing this area to the front of your desktop. 6. Ensure that Kaltura has selected the correct microphone for your recording. The indicator (beside the microphone symbol) will show if the sound is being picked up. 7. When you are ready to record, click the red record button. You will bet a 3 second countdown, after which you can start recording. At this time, the record button will change to a pause button. You can record for up to 2 hours, although this is not recommended. 8. When you are finished your recording, press the pause button. At this stage you can decided to continue recording, by pressing the red button again, or complete the recording by clicking Done. 9. Now you have the opportunity to preview your recording and enter some information such as the video title, a short description and some keywords (to facilitate later searching). If you are not happy with the recording you can simply cancel and start again. If you are happy and hove entered the information, click upload. 10. The video will now be processed, transcoded and optimized for use within Blackboard. The video will now appear within the Course Gallery. It may take a few more minutes for the video to process fully. The following source formats are supported out of the box and can be ingested by Kaltura: FLV/F4V, MOV/MP4/QT/M4V, AVI, 3GP, ASF/WMV, MPG/M1V/M2V, MKV, Ogg, RM, WEBM. Webex ARF files has to be converted by saving the file to the Webex server, saving to your location then upload to Kaltura.
