2 Survey Background and Methods In spring quarter 2008, the third-year Davis Honors Challenge team sponsored by Babette Schmitt, Director of Strategic Planning and Communications for Information and Educational Technology, asked Student Affairs Research & Information (SARI) to conduct a QuickSurvey to assist them in exploring campus interest in implementing a Gmail service as the default campus-supported service. From May 14 to May 21, 2008, SARI administered a QuickSurvey to all undergraduate students via the MyUCDavis portal ( A total of 5046 undergraduate students responded. This is about a 24% response rate for all undergraduates. Undergraduate students were asked to indicate whether or not they heard about the optional UC Davis Gmail service within the week prior to when the QuickSurvey was administered. Response options included, yes and no. Below is a screenshot of the QuickSurvey face question as it appeared on the portal: Student Affairs Research & Information 1

3 If respondents answered yes, they were led to a branch question asking how they heard about the service. Here are the screenshots of the branch questions as it appeared on the portal: Student Affairs Research & Information 2

4 Results Twenty-six percent of respondents answered that they heard about the UC Davis Gmail service within that past week. Figure 1: Have you heard about the UC Davis Gmail service within the past week? % % 1 Yes No Of the respondents who heard about the UC Davis Gmail service, 47% most often reported that they found out through the California Aggie. This is followed by from word of mouth, 29% from Facebook, and 13% from fliers/posters. 5 Males were more likely than females to have heard about the UC Davis Gmail service within that past week ( vs. 23%) as shown in Figure 3. Figure 3: Awareness of UC Davis Gmail service within the past week by Gender % 1 Female Male Figure 4 illustrates that Asian/Pacific Islander students most frequently reported that they were aware about implementation of the optional UC Davis Gmail service. African American students were the least likely to have heard of this service. 6 Among Asian students, Filipino students were the most likely to have heard of the Gmail service that UC Davis will implement (35%). Pacific Islander students were the least likely to have heard of this service (13%). However, please note that the Pacific Islander sample size is rather small. 8 Females were more likely than males to report hearing about the UC Davis Gmail service through fliers and or posters (16% vs. 11%). None of the Native American students reported this as the communication method. However, please note that this sample size is rather small.
