1 BlackSun Inc Server Migration Information Basic Settings Following a Migration Introduction At BlackSun Inc. we have been dedicated to delivering excellent quality service and support that not only meet your requirements but exceed your expectations for your Web Hosting. In order to continue to deliver the level of service you ve come to know and expect, we will be performing a series of migrations in order to bring all of our servers up to the most modern standards in encryption, compatibility and hardware.
2 What does this mean for you? Our Support Team has been instructed on how to effectively and seamlessly migrate the content of your hosting plan to our newest series of servers. Before your migration our Support Team will contact you with a schedule time for your migration. Upon receiving your confirmation, we will proceed with the migration and continue to provide direct support to you as well as answer any questions you may have. Users Users who have accounts associated with their hosting plans here at BlackSun may require a few small changes to their mail clients (Such as Outlook or Mac Mail) and mobile devices (Smartphones and Tablets) that will be outlined in the second section of this document. Developers Our Support Team will be working diligently to ensure that your site continues to operate as it does currently, however during the migration your data will be moved to a new physical server meaning it will be assigned a new IP address and draw information from a new Database location. This means that any hard-coded links within the site s development and file structure will experience outages and errors. From a development perspective this is a concern about maintaining functionality. For larger, more complex sites or sites with a large amount of 3rd party or custom content, this may require a more in-depth inspection from you. Regardless of the complexity of the issue, our Support Team will be here to provide any assistance and information they can that falls within the scope of their abilities. 2
3 Post-Migration Process BlackSun has our own name servers through which the majority of our client s domains are handled by however some clients are either still using our older name servers or are using a different company s name server altogether. If you site is setup to use BlackSun s current name servers (dns1.blacksun.ca and dns2.blacksun.ca) then no further action will be necessary as the changes will be automatic. If you are using BlackSun s legacy name servers (ns1.blacksun.ca and ns2.blacksun.ca) then there will be some manual changes required that our Support Team will manage for you. Should you be using a 3rd party name server, there will be changes that you will need to contact your DNS provider for. Our Support Team will be able to inform you about what information you need to provide to them. The ultimate goal of these migrations is to improve upon the level of service you receive in our continuing efforts to provide you with the best quality Web Hosting service we can. These migrations are designed to be seamless to the point that the end user should not even be able to tell when the change is made. With this in mind however, there is a possibility an issue or disruption in your service could arise. 4 Client Setup As this migration entails moving your hosting plan s content to a new server you may need to make some small changes to the configuration of your clients and -enabled devices. A very important note about accessing your Should your client experience any outages or issues, you can connect directly to your mail server via our in-browser portal by navigating to example.com/webmail where your domain takes the place of example.com. This will bring up a login screen that you will be able to enter your username and password to view your mail. Before viewing your inbox, you will be prompted to select a Mail Client. We strongly recommend using RoundCube as it is the simplest and most user-friendly interface. Our Support Team will provide you with the necessary information to fill in your mail client as well as a link to our Knowledge Base where specific instructions for common mail clients are available for viewing and download. 4
5 What to include in a Support Ticket Should an issue occur post-migration and the settings outlined in the Knowledge Base don t work or don t include your Mail Client, you will need to contact our support team. For related issues post migration the best course of action is to send an to our team at support@blacksun.ca and include the following information: The account you are experiencing issues with Whether you are having trouble sending, receiving or both How you are accessing your (Outlook, Mac OS Mail, on a Samsung Galaxy s5) Your IP address (This can be found by searching What is my IP? in Google) Our Support Team may ask for more specific diagnostic information depending on the situation, but those 4 things are universally necessary for us to find the source and ultimately the solution to any issue that occur. 5
