3 Who are we? IT CLIENT SERVICES provides a Student Support Helpdesk through the Open Access Labs. This should be your first point of contact for any computer enquires. In many cases the information you require will be readily available here. In some cases it may be necessary for staff to seek second level support, which is done by logging a job to the necessary support team. A team of eight full time AUT staff members monitor the Open Access labs and are available during the lab opening hours. We also have a number of AUT students that work as Attendants in the Labs part-time to compliment our team and provide coverage outside of core hours. Some after hours help for failure of core services is available on weekends through IT Student Helpdesk. If you need to contact helpdesk, please us at help@aut.ac.nz Visit the IT Student Services webpage for up to date information Internet Registration Internet registration is a MUST for all students. This will enable students to access all our services. Off campus registration go to: This will take you to page to the right: Please enter your AUT Computer Login name that can be found on the bottom right hand corner of your AUT Student ID Card. Click next and follow instructions. Before your registration is complete please read through the Internet Acceptable Use Policy. This document shows AUT s Internet policies that all AUT students must comply with when using their AUT Internet account. When you have done this click on the Proceed icon once. Please make note of your initial password that is automatically generated. Click on login and login with this password. Reset to the password of your choice after this. Note: You will need to create this account to access Unicentral. Changing your Password To change the passwords, go to the change password option is to the left of the webpage. Note: You need to be logged in to the internet in order to change password. Changing this password will change all system passwords, except Arion. 1

4 UniCentral UniCentral is a single access point to all your essential IT resources; if you go to you will be able to login and have instant access to all of the following services: Arion: Re-enrol, pay fees, view your timetable, results or update information such as personal and academic details AUT online: Access your online courses Library Catalogue & E-Library: Setup and use catalogue search preferences and check your Library details (items on loan, etc) & access the online library resources Lab booking: Book an open access lab computer Print and Internet Balances: Check and top-up your balances Student Web Mail: Access your AUT account My Files: Access the files on your AUT Shared drives Please note: All students will need to complete their AUT Student Internet registration before they can access this site. AUTonline To access AUTOnline go to the following location: To login to AUTOnline you need to use your AUT Computer account username and password. Minimum Computer Requirements Pentium PC with Windows 98 or Mac Power PC System 8.6, 800x600 monitor resolution, 56k modem, Internet Explorer 5.0 or Netscape Navigator 4.6, Java and Java Script enabled, Adobe Acrobat Reader, Apple Quick Time, Macromedia Flash Player, Microsoft Excel Viewer, Microsoft Media Player, Microsoft Powerpoint Viewer, Microsoft Word Viewer, StuffIt Expander. Troubleshooting If you get a password error then please contact the Student Helpdesk at help@aut.ac.nz If you get an LDAP error while logging on to AUT Online, then you need to go back to the faculty office or programme administrator and get them to look at your enrolment status for your papers. If you haven't returned your offer of place form they will be in unapproved status too. Please remember that once it has been approved then you will have access automatically overnight. If they get the following error: No authentication credentials were provided with the request, its generally caused by your Internet settings on your home/office PC. Make sure that the cookies are enabled and there is no firewall blocking the site, this problem generally occurs when you try logging in from work. 2

5 AUT Web mail Along with your network login, AUT automatically allocates you a Web Mail account that you can use to communicate with staff and peers. This site can be accessed from anywhere by simply entering: or via into your web browsers address bar. To login, just enter the same details as your network login and make sure you have selected the student server in the options. Your address will be your loginname@aut.ac.nz i.e. xyz1234@aut.ac.nz Mailbox Listing The contents of your Inbox folder will be displayed immediately upon logging in. The Mailbox Listing shows the contents of each message's header (message status, date sent, sender, subject, and size). Each column has a heading. Clicking on the heading will cause the listing to be sorted by that column. To view the contents of a message, click on the message's subject. You'll be taken to the Message screen. Web mail Menu The Menu is where you will access most of the features of Web Mail; these include 'INBOX', 'Compose', 'Folders', 'Options', 'Search', 'Help', 'Address Book', and 'Logout'. Mail Forwarding If you wish to forward mail received by your AUT account to your own account you can do this by going to the AUT homepage and logging on to the Internet. Go to: 3

6 Once you are logged in, click on the Change Setting tab and this will give you the option of forwarding your to your preferred address. Enter your preferred address and click on change my delivery method. Your mail will now be forwarded on to your selected address. Arion Website AUT students are able to access their personal details, academic timetables and course results by simply visiting the Arion website: or To login, enter your computer login name and Arion password (this will be on your invoice after you have received your payment) If you have forgotten or misplaced your Arion password please us your full details including your login, ID number and your date of birth, at NOTE: Do not forget in mention that you re a distance student. Accessing your Files from Home AUT have created a site for students to access their files and upload/download their resources and work from anywhere via the internet. You can obtain work saved on your home directory (H:/) and the copy drive (K:/) by simply logging into the my files website: or and entering your login name and network password. To save a file to your home computer simply select the file and then go to file and download To save files from your home PC to your home directory simply select the upload option. It will appear with a screen similar to this where you will browse for the file on your home PC which you would like to upload. 4

7 AUT Software Available for Personal Use Endnote: We also have the endnote referencing program available for download from the IT Software download link: When prompted, enter your Internet username and password. NOD32 anti-virus: NOD32 anti-virus software is installed on all AUT PC's, if you require NOD32 for home use, you can download it by clicking on the IT Software Downloads link to the left under Web Links or visiting: When prompted, enter your Internet username and password. Helpful Tips Do not use floppy disk to save your work to o Save to your home directory or USB device When creating documents save your work regularly o This will reduce the chance of losing your work Make sure to backup your work in a number of places o Home PC, USB or your home directory o You wont have to type your assignment out again Frequently Asked Questions 1. Why can t I login to the Internet? Make sure you have registered for an AUT Internet account first! You may have entered an incorrect login name or password? 2. I can t login to AUT Online! Are you currently enrolled as a student with AUT? Is your course an AUT Online course? You may have entered an incorrect login name or password 3. How can I check my results online? Go to and click the Arion Link Or visit 4. But I can t login to Arion? You may have entered an incorrect login name? You may have entered an incorrect password? 5. What is my address? Your address is your loginname@aut.ac.nz and your password is the same as your internet password. 6. Can I use my personal address instead of my AUT address? YES! You can change your web mail settings to forward your AUT to any other address. This is done at the Internet Login page. 5
