1 OVERVIEW: Use to review assignment submissions for plagiarism potential and create opportunities to help students identify how to properly attribute sources rather than paraphrase. is effective as both a deterrent and an educational tool. compares submitted assignments against a set of academic papers to identify areas of overlap between the submitted assignment and existing works. DirectSubmit generates reports on papers not uploaded to an assignment using the service. You can use DirectSubmit to add papers to the institutional database. The following tutorial describes how to use s Direct Submit tool. Learn more about. HOW TO DIRECT SUBMIT TO SAFEASSIGN: 1. Access any Blackboard course and go to the Control Panel. 2. Click on Course Tools and then. bbsupport@cityu.edu Page 1

2 3. From the screen select DirectSubmit. BLACKBOARD TUTORIAL for INSTRUCTORS 4. If you would like other faculty in your course to be able to access the reports of the papers you submit, select Shared from the top right menu. If no one else needs access to the reports stay on Private. Note: any faculty added to the course will have access to reports added to the Shared area. 5. You may submit one paper at a time or a group of papers compressed into a ZIP file (no more than 10MG). direct submit accepts the following file types: a. Microsoft Word document (DOC, DOCX) b. Rich Text Format (RTF) c. HTML (HTM, HTML) d. Text (TXT, TEXT) e. Zip-compressed multiple files (ZIP) f. Portable document format (PDF) g. Open document format (ODT) bbsupport@cityu.edu Page 2

3 6. When ready select Submit Paper. 7. Select desired settings on the next screen. a b c a. Submission options: to submit a draft of a document(s) check the first box. This will return an originality report, but not add the document to the institutional database. The final version of the paper can be submitted later bbsupport@cityu.edu Page 3

4 and will not return the draft paper as a matching document. To skip the originality check and just add the paper to the institutional database, check Skip Plagiarism Checking. This is the option one should use to add older documents to the institutional repository. This will save time and not burden the system with unnecessary originality reports. b. Upload File: to upload files from your computer check the box for Upload File and click Choose File. Note the acceptable file types below the Choose File button. c. Copy/Paste Document: to check text that is not saved to a file (such as an or discussion post) copy the text from the original location and paste it in the Paper Text field provided. Give the Paper a title. 8. When files have been uploaded or text pasted in, select Submit to send the information to. 9. Depending on the size of the file, the quantity of documents in a ZIP file, or whether a Plagiarism check is desired, this request may take several minutes to complete. Most reports are returned within 20 minutes. You may leave this screen and return to it later when the plagiarism reports are available. HOW TO CHECK PLAGIARISM REPORTS SUBMITTED THROUGH SAFEASSIGN DIRECTSUBMIT: NOTE: See Review Reports for instruction on accessing reports for student submissions to Blackboard Assignments. 1. The follow the steps above to access and Direct Submit. Select Shared if you uploaded documents to the shared area. 5 a. File: Click the green arrow to download a copy of the original file. b. Matching: Indicates the percent of the paper that matches an existing source. c. Draft: if the box for Submit as Draft was checked during submission an icon indicating that this document is a draft would appear. d.
