3 What is Turnitin Similarity Check Turnitin compares submitted work to a large academic database of published scientific articles, books, thesis works (also LUTPub), journals and web pages. It finds similarities between the work and database As a result, it gives an Feedback Studio Report, that shows the similarities between submitted text and references in database.

4 Why use Turnitin? Because it shows similarities between your text and references, you and your supervisors can detect possible poor scientific paraphrasing, improper citations and even plagiarism by interpreting the report. The report itself does not tell if your text includes plagiarism! The best practise is that checking is performed during the writing process, not just at the end. The originality check must be done before the dissertation process and your supervisor must give the clearance

5 How to perform the Turnitin originality check? When you want to check your manuscript (or draft/article), contact and ask to be added to s special Moodle-course: Turnitin Originality check for doctoral students (year) This course is open to visitors, so you can read instructions and other material, but you cannot perform the check without being added as a student to the course. You can self-enrol to course > look at Administration block > Enrol me to the course If your supervisor wants see the Originality report in Moodle, let us know his/her name also to be added to this course. You may have agreed that you deliver a PDF-file of the report (you can print it out).

7 Contents of the Moodle course You can check your texts FREELY as many times as you want Re-submission has a 24-hour delay before the report shows! You can check 5 different text, each givin own report Your submission is NOT saved to the database Text formats: txt-, rtf-, doc-, docx-, pdf- and odtfile formats are accepted pdf:s with only images or passwords are not accepted Non-MS docs or Apple pages are not accepted Removing pics and tables the check can be quicker! 8 How to submit? After you click the Turnitin assignment open: The My Submissions page opens Separate drafts/articles (parts) are on tabs -> separate reports Due date tells when the submission closes Separate parts on tabs Due date Submit here

9 How to submit? Give the title Search the file on your computer or drag/drop The student takes the responsibility for any copyright violation and gives a permission for possible saving in the database (tick)

10 How to submit? Submission starts and data is syncronized The view first shows: Pending = the report is not ready You can refresh submissions

11 How to submit? When the originality report is ready, the similarity index as percentage appears The report opens by clicking the percentage Open the report

12 Feedback Studio -report A Similarity index is a part of the report, its hows Total index and match list indeces Color-coded and numbered matches in the text, where similarity is found Grading for comments Total similarity One match: the index should not be high Grading Similarity Match: By clicking the match number, a source is shown. Full text may be available

13 Originality report Similarity percentage is not unambiguous Low percentage doesn t mean that there isn t copied text. Higher percentage doesn t necessary mean plagiarism Why similarities are found? It includes quotes and bibliography -> they can be filtered out List of things Scientific terms Similar methods, autoplagiarism Poor paraphrasing Plagiarism Similarity is not always plagiarism! -> report must be interpreted!
