Supporting multiple CAV projects: Safety Pilot Model Deployment Ann Arbor CV Test Environment M-City American Center for Mobility Impact of CV environment on 3,000 vehicles communicating over DSRC Planned, deployed, & integrated over 50 DSRC RSUs Installed next gen signal controllers to execute SPaT message broadcasting Led public outreach for Planet M website 15

16 COLUMBUS, OH SMART CITIES INITIATIVE Lessons learned: Smart Cities involve a wide variety of stakeholders it s not just Traffic Engineers. WSP is a part of the ITS Implementation team; Services include: Lead the systems engineering and design activities for the Connected Vehicle (CV) and Connected Electric Automated Vehicle (CEAV); Support AV shuttle testing; Deployment in three major corridors with 175 planned DSRC locations; Developed the concept of operations for this CV environment, which includes 15 different CV applications, addressing both safety and mobility needs; WSP has worked with City staff, vendors and other stakeholders to develop the concept for this pilot. 16

17 NCHRP REPORTS Lessons learned: Identification of best practices are an effective ingredient for agencies looking to start a CAV program. NCHRP Impacts of Connected Vehicles and Automated Vehicles on State and Local Transportation Agencies Task 8 - Dedicating Lanes for Priority or Exclusive Use by CVs and AVs Applying models to assess benefits and dis-benefits Identifying the policy actions that need to be taken in support of lane dedication Task 12 - Business Models to Facilitate Deployment of CV Infrastructure to Support AV Operations Issues influencing investment Identify business cases to be made Develop, evaluate, and effectively present a business case for such investment NCHRP Administration of Highway and Transportation Agencies Task Connected Road Classification System (CRCS) Development Synthesize road classification systems that consider connected vehicles and automated vehicles Build consensus among stakeholders 17

18 TRAFFIC SIGNAL DATA SHARING POLICIES & BEST PRACTICES Lessons learned: Traffic signal data sharing is currently an evolving market. Agencies should continue to the pursuit of traffic signal data sharing utilizing any and all methods for communication. WSP led an investigation of the policies and procedures currently established or practiced nationwide, and to identify best practices DSRC vs. Non-DSRC methods of sharing Issues: Cost Liability Benefits Takeaways: Complementary paths Maintain some measure of control Ready-Fire-Aim Continue the dialogue 18

19 MARYLAND STATE HIGHWAY ADMINISTRATION Lessons learned: A crucial step is a planning process that brings together all stakeholders and establishes a living document roadmap to help guide the CAV program. Comprehensive CAV Strategic Action Plan that encompasses both short and medium term recommendations. A requirements document and system architecture for deployment of DSRC along a major corridor in between Baltimore and Washington, DC. Support multiple applications including transit signal priority and freight operations. 19
