3 BACKGROUND Over the past five years, the entire archive of 125 New Zealand Geographic magazines dating back to 1989 have been digitised. The archive is text-searchable and one of the richest sources of New Zealand content available including more than 600 timeless feature stories of original writing and photography commissioned by three award-winning editors over the magazine s 25-year history. The content is added to with a new issue every two months. The timelessness of the archive is evident from reader behaviour of the 353,000 readers of New Zealand Geographic, 87% archive their issues indefinitely.

4 TECHNOLOGY It is html5-based and can be read on any internet-connected device with a browser, including smartphones and tablets. There is no software to download and no plugins to maintain. The interface can be expanded to full-screen mode with a click allowing the viewing of magazines at actual size with peeling page technology and vector-based type for a smooth, intuitive, fast and elegant reading experience. The pages can be zoomed with a click and panned for those on smaller screens. TRIAL LOGIN While features are being added over summer in anticipation of the April 2014 live date including improved search, discovery by tag and curriculum connections the core functionality of the digital archive that has been available to subscribers for a year is available to test now. Enter the following details when requested to authenticate as a trial user: Surname: EPIC / Subscriber Number: You will be taken into the reading interface. This authentication only needs to be done once per session. (Using IP authentication, SSO or referring-url which will be part of the final EPIC package, the user need not log in at all.)

5 ACCESING THE ARCHIVE Go to and select a magazine or a feature story, click the blue Read Issue Online button. You will be asked to authenticate if you haven t already. BROWSING THE ARCHIVE Browsing within a magazine is intuitive, and aided by a Quick Start key on the first page to assist first-time users. Within the reading view, click the icon to enlarge the window to full-screen. Double-click to zoom in and out, click the page edge to advance to the next page or simply peel the page. To jump forward pages either enter the page number or click the thumbnail view to browse. Clicking the back button will take the user back to the archives page.

6 RESOURCES FOR STUDENTS New Zealand Geographic is currently developing a set of resources connected to the new curriculum that will enhance the utility of the archive for teachers and students by connecting with English, Social Sciences and Science Learning Areas. These will be developed as a growing resource. The first (draft) resource is now online, Experience Volcanoes with more resources and more features to come monthly to aid teachers and students getting the most out of the archive content. FURTHER DEVELOPMENT There is ongoing development of deep-search functionality within the new Network 4 Learning (N4L) and support for creation of provider- and teacher-created workbooks to make this an ever-evolving portal for research and discovery.
