3 Overview Some of the Multimedia Classrooms feature instructional technology such as a Windows based computer, internet connections, a ceiling-mounted video projector, a DVD/VHS player, an amplifier, and speakers. These are equipped within a secure podium to provide faculty and other presenters a flexible and effective way to present their materials. This User s Guide provides a brief orientation to the Multimedia Classrooms, with simplified instructions and detailed illustrations. Please provide any feedback to Tech Support Training and Technical Support Training: To schedule hands-on training to use the equipment in the Multimedia Classrooms, please contact the Tech Support at extension We recommend you field-test the Multimedia Classroom equipment thoroughly before using it for the first time in front of a group. Before each class you should allow five minutes to test the equipment and always prepare a contingency plan just in case the technology does not work. 4 Operating the Projector There is a ceiling mounted data/video projector in each of the 0.5 rooms. accessed from the control panel on the podium. 5 Turn the power off Press the OFF button on the podium control panel The Projector will come on with a LCD splash screen until you push another button on the control panel to tell the projector what you want to access. The Pic Mute button can be used if the presenter sets up something that they do not want their audience to see yet. 6 Using the DVD/VHS Player The DVD/VHS Player is located within the podium s front double doors. On the left side of the DVD/VHS Player you will find the Power button as well as video inputs to hook a camera up to record what is playing on the screen. On the right side of the DVD/VHS Player you will find the VHS control buttons..5 Multimedia Classroom User s Guide 6 Technology Services ITS

7 Once the video medium is placed within the machine you can select VCR upon on the control panel of the podium. The buttons above will step you through each of the items that can be projected through the projector and onto the screen at the front or side of the room. The remote for the DVD/VHS can be found in the drawer on the side of the podium where the document Camera is found..5 Multimedia Classroom User s Guide 7 Technology Services ITS

8 Using the Document Camera By opening the door on the right side of the podium, and sliding out the drawer you will find the document camera. Taking the cover off of the camera reveals the actual device in it s folded down mode..5 Multimedia Classroom User s Guide 8 Technology Services ITS

9 Some assembly is required before you can use the document camera. By pressing the button at the back of the machine and lift the arm to it s full upright position. Rotate the camera lens to face down. Pull out on each of the lights at the sides and turn them over. The Document Camera should now be ready for operation..5 Multimedia Classroom User s Guide 9 Technology Services ITS

10 Turn the document camera on by pressing the silver button to the right of the red light. The camera will take a few moments to warm up before the lights turn on. There are several ways to use this camera. Normal transparencies will work find on it as will a sheet of paper, a notebook, a book or a picture. NOTE: Please do not leave books face down on the camera as the printing will melt into the white surface. The document camera has several video setting to enhance what you are presenting. SVGA is the suggested setting for the camera to be on. You also have the option to zoom in and.5 Multimedia Classroom User s Guide 10 Technology Services ITS

11 out on the image as well as freeze the image on the screen and remove it from the camera. Unfreezing will remove the image from the projector screen. There are also different lighting techniques that can be used with the document camera. You have your choice of Upper Lights, Bottom Lights and there is even a setting on some of the cameras to use negative lighting. Press the Doc Cam button on the Control Panel of the Podium to project the image from the Document Camera to the screen..5 Multimedia Classroom User s Guide 11 Technology Services ITS

12 Using the Laptop Connection Hook the VGA Cable that is on top of the podium to the back of your laptop. The audio cable should go into the headphone jack on your laptop. Boot your laptop up and press the Laptop button on the control panel of the podium..5 Multimedia Classroom User s Guide 12 Technology Services ITS

13 Not all laptops are created equal. Some laptops will project to the screen right off the bat. Others, the signal has to be sent from the laptop to the projector. Remember to cycle through the Fn + (LCD/CRT) button (Sometimes this can be F3, F8 or F12) on the laptop. One should show you your laptop desktop and nothing on the screen. The next should show you nothing on your laptop and your desktop appearing on the screen. The final sequence should show your desktop on both the laptop and the screen. Be aware that whatever is on your laptop screen will be projected to the screen at the front or side of the room. Pressing the Pic Mute button on the control panel will black out the view on the screen. If you need to access the internet a hard wired network connection is available above the laptop connection..5 Multimedia Classroom User s Guide 13 Technology Services ITS

14 Using the AUX Video The AUX Video button on the Control Panel will let you project video from a movie camera or a secondary VHS player. In order to use this button you will have to hook up the medium that you want to use to the right side of the control panel. Remember to turn your device on, the AUX Video button will only give you access to the connections, it will not turn your device on..5 Multimedia Classroom User s Guide 14 Technology Services ITS

15 Using the Podium Computer By selecting the PC Button on the Podium in those that have PC s you may access the dedicated podium computer. With this computer you can log in with yourfirstname.lastname and your password to the Main domain and access your H drive. Like the Laptop selection you are showing what you are searching for on the screen in the room. The PC is also located at the base of your podium behind the double doors. 16 Before you leave Please make sure of the following: 1) Remove any media that you may have used in the DVD/VCR player 2) Turn off the podium at the Control panel 3) Turn off all other equipment you may have used during class.5 Multimedia Classroom User s Guide 16 Technology Services ITS
