Navigation Moving from a Windows based PC to an Apple computer can be a big transition for many people. Even the most tech savvy people will have trouble from time to time. Yet, as you make this transition you will begin to understand why so many individuals and educators have begun to love Apple products. In order to help get you started, let s take a look at an excerpt from the Apple.com website. Spotlight: This icon can be used to help locate everything from files to applications. To access it, simply click the magnifying glass at the top right of your screen. It can also be used for simple math and definitions. DOCK: The dock is a bar of icons that sits at the bottom or side of your screen (based on your preferences). It displays all of your icons currently running in the background and certain programs you use most often. You can determine which programs are currently running by looking for a small 8/22/2011 School Faculty/Staff Induction Plan page 3

white circle underneath the dock icon. Note: If you have to many applications running, your computer battery will run down at a faster pace. Also, remember that only applications can be on the left of the small dashed lines on the dock. All files and web shortcuts must be to the right of the lines. Trash: This icon is used for both housing deleted content and ejecting various drives. For example, if you plugged up a flash drive (thumb drive) you will notice that it appears on the desktop. To eject it, click the flash drive icon and drag it to where the trash icon was located. Notice that the icon changes to an arrow with a line under it. You will notice that the flash drive is no longer on your desktop and you can now unplug the device. Finder: Finder is the Mac equivalent of My Computer on the PC. You can access all files, programs and network locations from this area. Notice that the left hand side has 4 categories. The devices section to access any devices you have connected to the computer. The shared section is where you will find your school server. The places section is where you will find your content. Finally, the search for section will show your recent computer activity. 8/22/2011 School Faculty/Staff Induction Plan page 4

Menu Bar: The menu bar menus will change as you switch applications. For example, when the Finder is active, you'll see the following menus across the menu bar: the Apple logo, Finder, File, Edit, View, Go, Window, and Help. Apple Logo: The apple logo is located at the top left of the screen. In this area, you will find Software updates, Log out options, Force Quit (Ctrl+Alt+Delete on PC) and System Preferences. If you see an arrow to the right of a word, scroll over the word to get more options. Desktop: The desktop is the big expanse of space that takes up the majority of your screen real estate. This is where you do most of your work; applications, files, and folders get opened on the desktop. Remember to keep your desktop clean. Essentially, refrain from saving files on the desktop. Do NOT place any applications on the desktop. They will not work! 8/22/2011 School Faculty/Staff Induction Plan page 5

Good! Bad! 8/22/2011 School Faculty/Staff Induction Plan page 6

System Preferences: System Preferences lets you to adjust things like your screen resolution, keyboard and mouse control, sound, and more. This is the control panel for the Mac. You can access system preferences by going to the apple at the top left and clicking on system preferences. You will need to explore through the menus to really get an idea of navigation. Please see the screen shot below. If you are interested in learning more about each area of the system preferences menu, please view the following website: 8/22/2011 School Faculty/Staff Induction Plan page 7

Important Areas of System Preferences Displays: This area will allow you to make changes to your resolution. It will also be the area you visit when working with a projector (Smart board/promethean). To hook up your MacBook to the screen, please do the following: 1. Hook up the VGA adaptor (Dongle) to the left side of your computer. The dongle should be in the box your Mac came in. 2. Hook the wire coming from the projector (Smart board/promethean) to the dongle. 3. In a few seconds, you should see the screen light up with a purple background. This is normal. 4. Go to the black apple at the top left of your desktop and choose system preferences. 5. Go to displays/click arrangement/click mirror displays. You should now notice that the screen matches your MacBook monitor. Energy Saver: This area will allow you to customize your battery preferences. For example, you would go to Energy Saver to adjust the time it takes for the monitor to go to sleep. This can be very useful during instruction time. 8/22/2011 School Faculty/Staff Induction Plan page 8

It is up to you to choose which one you would like to use. 3. Microsoft Office for Mac: This software is very similar to the PC version of Microsoft Office. It is loaded on every RCSD MacBook Pro. 4. imovie: This is a video editing software similar to Windows Movie Maker. 5. Firefox: If you are unhappy with Safari, you may want to try this web browser. It offers an interface similar to Internet Explorer. 6.
