3 ios 11 has arrived and look what is new ios 11, Apple s newest operating system for iphones and ipads recently became available. Packed with features, we ll look at some that may be useful for you if you are an iphone or ipad user. Live Photos (actually introduced to the iphone 6 and 6 Plus in late 2015) is much improved. Live Photos is also available on the iphone 7, 7 Plus, 8, 8 Plus and the latest model, the iphone X. What does it do? It takes a video 1.5 seconds before and 1.5 seconds after one actually presses the shutter button. So now one has both a moving video and a still image to remember that special event. Store more photos and videos on you iphone. Apple changed the compression format in ios 11 resulting in almost twice as much capacity for storing one s photos and videos than in ios 10. One needs to activate this feature as follows: Go to Settings> Photos> check Optimize iphone Storage. If you use the App Store, you will notice a much cleaner, bolder look. There are new tabs at the bottom of the app and a personalized Today tab highlights unique apps, in addition to the separate tabs for Games and Apps making it easier to find new or notable apps. There are more video previews available making it easier to read top reviews. Do you use imessage? In ios 10 an app drawer was added that provided one stickers and GIFs and additional buttons and visuals to enhance one s messages. Problem is, they were not that easy to find. In ios 11, Apple re-designed the app drawer in its Messages app, making it easier to browse stickers and emojis. Hey Siri, can speak additional languages with its new translation feature (now in beta). Ask her how to say something in Spanish, or Mandarin Chinese or Italian or French or German. And she also has a newer synthesized voice. Go to Settings> Siri & Search> Siri Voice to change gender or accent. And not only is Siri smarter, so is the iphone keyboard. If you type anything in ios 11, Apple s built-in keyboard will suggest words that you may have recently viewed on your iphone (from messages or Safari). For example, if someone messages you to meet at a specific named restaurant, that restaurant name may be one of the first suggestions you see when you start searching for that restaurant on the web. Oh, and now one can use the default keyboard with just one hand. To activate this mode, hold the emoji key and select one-handed typing which will move the keys closer to your thumb. Have you seen the new Control Center? Introduced in ios 7, this was probably one of the most useful features of the iphone. By swiping up from the bottom of the home screen there are now a variety of shortcuts and buttons. And it is customizable so you can add custom shortcuts. To do so go to Settings> Control Center> Customize Controls. NOTE: toggling off Bluetooth and Wi-Fi from the Control Center does NOT shut off Bluetooth and Wi-Fi entirely. It only disconnects your iphone from Bluetooth and Wi-Fi but it is still searching for Bluetooth and Wi-Fi and consuming your battery to do so. To shut it off completely, one must do so via Settings> Bluetooth and toggle it off or Settings> Wi- Fi and toggle it off. Likewise, even when one has disconnected Wi-Fi via the Control Center, AirPlay and AirDrop will still work. And your iphone will still join other known Wi-Fi networks when you change locations or restart the device. And when disconnecting Bluetooth via the Control Center, location accuracy and other services are still enabled and you will still be connected to your Apple Watch and you can still use the Instant Hotspot, Apple Pencil and Handoff. 3

4 ios 11 has arrived and look what is new (continued) Apple added a new feature that triggers a Do Not Disturb mode when the iphone is in the car. It will hide notifications for texts, calls and other apps while one is driving. This new app can even send automatic text replies to notify people that one is driving and will contact them soon. Go to Settings> Do Not Disturb and Activate under the Do Not Disturb While Driving heading. Apple Maps has improved and can be used inside and out. Apple added indoor maps for hundreds of airports and shopping centers around the world to make it easier for one to navigate. Additionally, Apple also added lane guidance to Apple Maps for more precise turn-by-turn directions. If you have an older iphone (or ipad) and plan to upgrade to one of the newer ones, you can place the new device close to your old one and import all of your settings, preferences and icloud Keychain passwords. It is like waving a magic wand to start you off using your brand-new device more quickly than ever before. Instantly share passwords. No more trying to find that piece of paper that you wrote the network password on. In ios 11, if you need a Wi-Fi password for a given network, just find someone who is already using it and hold your device near theirs and request access to transfer the password instantly. The first ipad exclusive feature is an all new Dock, which contains many more apps. And if you add more apps to the dock, the icons will shrink to make room. On the right-hand side of the Dock, there is a new section to show Continuity suggestions and recently opened applications. One can swipe up from the bottom edge of the screen to show the Dock, whether one is inside an app or anywhere within the system. This allows one a quick way to switch between apps. Swiping a second time (while the dock is visible) enters the Mission Control multi-tasking interface which combines recent app cards with Control Center. With ios 11 there is the new Slide Over and Split View modes in the ipad. Multi-tasking just became easier as slide over apps now appear as a floating window and can be dragged to the left or right of the screen. Although split view only supports two apps at once, there is more flexibility in their arrangement. For instance, one can have 70/30, 30/70 or 50/50 splits. (The newest ipad Pro lets users interact with four (4) apps simultaneously, two (2) apps in Split View, a floating Side Over app and a Picture-in Picture video window). But wait, there s more! To enhance multi-tasking, one can drag and drop apps and more. One could pick up a web link from Safari and drop it into an one is composing. Or organize one s into separate inboxes, just by dragging and dropping. Or take a screenshot and drag the preview window into a Messages conversation. Even though this new Drag and Drop system also exists on the iphone, items cannot be moved between apps like they can be with the ipad and one cannot have multiple applications on the phone screen at once. With all these great features (and there are more than what we covered here) there may be one downside. And that is that ios 11 is 64-bit only, which means that older 32-bit only apps and games will not launch after upgrading to ios 11. Go to Settings> General> About to see if you have obsolete apps installed. Tap on Applications to display a list of software that will no longer work on ios 11. 4

5 Windows and listening in ON THE AIR The new Windows Fall Creators Update, version 1709, was released Oct 12 and folks are starting to receive this update. If you have yet to receive it, be patient and in due time, you too will likely get it. So what s new with this Fall Update? There is a new feature in the Photo app that lets one quickly put together a selection of photos and videos into a video that can be shared via Facebook and Instagram. It is called Video Remix. With it, you can have as much (or as little) control in terms of editing photos, trimming video clips and adding filters, text and a soundtrack. With Video Remix, you can edit the video yourself or use the Remix it for me button and let Microsoft do it. Cortana, your digital assistance, is now able to shut down, restart, lock or sign you out of your PC. And instead of just listing answers to your questions, she now expands her info into a panel to show her Best match answers. She has learned quite a bit since first appearing on the scene in Windows 8.1. You can now see all of your OneDrive files in File Explorer including those you downloaded to your PC and those you stored only in the Cloud. Downloaded files get a green checkmark while those only on OneDrive get a little blue cloud icon next to them. To download from the Cloud, right-click on a file in File Explorer and select Always keep on this device or simply open the file stored only in OneDrive and it will download for your use. Like conversing with your grandkids using Emojis? Use the Windows key + the period key to call up the new Emoji panel. The Fall Creators Update now has a People button that one can add directly to one s taskbar. This button will provide you with quick access for up to three (3) contacts with whom you converse with the most. Perhaps the most useful feature is the anti-ransomware protection. Within the Windows Defender Security Center there is a toggle for a new feature called Controlled Folder access. This new feature protects one against ransomware attacks that can lock one out of one s data. By default, the Desktop, Documents, Music, Pictures and Video folders are all protected, but one can customize and add other folders to be protected. With the Controlled Folder Access feature turned on, malicious and suspicious apps are blocked from changing files in known locations. That's a major roadblock for most known strains of ransomware, which do their dirty work by encrypting your personal files and demanding payment for the decryption key. To access this new feature, open the Windows Defender Security Center> Virus & threat protection> Virus & threat protection settings. Then toggle on Controlled folder access. Lastly, there is a new phone section in Settings that allows one to connect one s phone and computer. Let s say that one was working on an office file on one s phone and then wanted to pick up (where one left off) one s PC? One can now do that (but really, how often do you work on Word, Excel or other Office files on your phone)? Another example is if you were reading an article on your phone and didn t finish it. One could tap a button to open that web page in Edge on one s computer and finish reading the article on one s computer. You may or may not use these new features, but Windows 10 continues to evolve. Again, as Windows 10 rolls out its newest update, you should get it automatically. Be patient. 5

6 Useful things you may want to know, or Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs) that we made up ourselves Q. I am a Windows 10 user and have a brand new laptop. How do I know what programs are installed on my new laptop? A. To see what programs are installed, go to Settings> System> Apps & features. Here you will see a listing of your apps. If you want to uninstall an app, simply click on it, then select Uninstall. Q. I heard that the new Apple ios 11 will let me scan with my iphone and ipad. Is this really true? A. Yes, with ios 11, there is a built-in document scanner within its own Notes app. (Actually, apps such as Evernote Scannable, Google Drive and Adobe Scan have been providing this functionality to iphones and ipads for some time). To activate the built-in scanner, just open the Notes app and while on a note, hit the plus symbol above the keyboard. This will display a menu with various options like Add a sketch, Take a Photo or Video, Photo Library and at the top, Scan Documents. To scan the document, hold your iphone/ipad at the document and when it is in focus, tap the shutter button to immediately capture it. You can then adjust it by moving the scanner s four corner points to match the document s edge. Once it is complete, hit Save (on the bottom right-hand corner) to insert it into your Notes. Q. When travelling, I often take my laptop and connect to publicly accessible Wi-Fi networks. But now I am wondering if that is a safe thing to do? A. Well, safe is a relative term. When one connects to a public Wi-Fi network, one has to be aware that there are various ways the crooks can exploit the network to steal one s data. One way to mitigate the risk, or increase one s security while on a public network, is to use a browser VPN (but that only hides your web activity). There is an important setting one should check before connecting to a public (or hotel or Internet café) Wi-Fi network. That is one s file and folder sharing, because that is a big security risk. When turned on, all of your shared folders and files may be accessible to everyone else who is connected to the same public network. Also if someone wanted to, they could set up a shared folder with malicious files and your computer may get infected if you were curious enough to click on them. But you know better than to click on files or links that you are not familiar with, right? To ensure your security, turn off file sharing before connecting to any public Wi-Fi spot. Here s how to do so. With Windows, search for Control Panel (in the search box adjacent to the Start Menu icon) and select the Control Panel desktop app that appears in the results list. Under Network and Internet, select View network status and tasks. On the left-hand side select Change advanced sharing settings. Under File and printer sharing, select Turn off file and printer sharing. To prevent network snoopers from seeing your computer, be sure to also select Turn off network discovery also. Be sure to save your changes. If you are a Mac user, open your Mac s System Preferences (the gear on your dock). Now click on the Sharing icon. On the displayed list, uncheck File Sharing. (It might also be a good idea to uncheck ALL of the other sharing services when connecting to a public Wi-Fi network). Close the window and you are done. NOTE: if you rely on shared folders and files when you return home, be sure to turn them back on when you connect to your own home network. 6
