1 Conventions used in this document: Keyboard keys that must be pressed will be shown as Enter or Ctrl. 2 Docs, Sheets, and Slides A number of apps will be installed and made available when you download and install Drive for PC. This is a list of the apps that are installed with Drive for PC: Docs A word processor that can open Microsoft Word documents or create Google documents. Sheets A spreadsheet program that can open Microsoft Excel spreadsheets or create spreadsheets in the Google file format. Slides A presentation program that can open Microsoft PowerPoint or create presentation in the Google format. Forms A program that will help you crate forms that you can place on the internet. Drawings A program similar to the Windows Paint program. My Maps My Maps will let you select an area on the earth and add your own markers ad directions to the map. Sites You can actually create and store a personal webpage. It is free and you can share the webpage with others. These apps are not physically stored on your computer and are only accessed via Google Drive or Chrome. These apps share certain characteristics: The apps are free, no subscription rate. Their default storage location is Drive and it cannot be changed. All files created are saved continuously in real time. There is no File Save option. Files created in an app can be downloaded to your computer and will be automatically converted to a file format that can be edited on your computer (if possible). Each app uses the Menu and Toolbar control areas in place of the Ribbon. You can edit a file with an app or you can use the appropriate Microsoft program if you are using the Microsoft format. The Docs app is representative of how Docs, Sheets, and Slides are all used. The layout of each of the three apps is similar and the controls are nearly identical. The major difference is what commands are available to manage the different apps. File Name Toolbar Menu Page 2 Revised 8/3/18
3 Home Page The Home Page for Docs, Sheets, and Slides is where you can open new documents. The documents can be blank or based on a template. Access the Home Page by activating the button. Select the type of document you want to open and begin editing. Page 3 Revised 8/3/18
4 File Name When a document is opened for the first time it will be assigned a default name. You can change the default name to a name that indicates the contents of the document. Click in the text box containing the default name and type in the new name. The change will be applied immediately. Menu The apps have a control area called a menu instead of the Microsoft ribbon. The menu is organized by categories of commands. The categories are similar to those listed in any program. Selecting a category will drop down a menu listing commands for the category. The menu may also have submenus available on any command with a the right of the command. to Page 4 Revised 8/3/18
5 Toolbar A toolbar is a control area similar to the ribbon. Each control on the toolbar will have a tooltip available that will describe the control. Some of the commands will have a symbol that indicates a menu will drop down when the control is activated. Page 5 Revised 8/3/18
6 Help Help is available from the menu. You can read any of the articles or search for your help topic. Page 6 Revised 8/3/18
