1 Jan 2012 ONYX White Paper Summa Cutting Workflow Changes included in Cutting Patch for X10 Build 10.1 and 10.2 Preface This document covers information regarding the Cutting Patch for X10 Build 10.1, which adds support for Summa USB, Summa Barcode Server automated Workflow, Flex-Cut, and multi-layer cutting. Please note this cutter patch will only work for the X10 build 10.1 version. Additionally, there are other cutter updates included in the patch, however this document only covers the Summa portion of the update. Please refer to the document Contour_Cutting_Workflow.pdf for details on setting up a print and cut workflow in ONYX. This document can be downloaded by visiting and search for Contour Cutting Workflow in ONYX X10. Installing the Patch The Summa changes and additions are included in the Cutting Patch for X10 build 10.1 and can be installed from the ONYX_x10_1_cutter_patch.msi file. Run the installer and follow the prompts in the installation wizard. Updates for Summa cutters Marks: By default you will use the Postnet Barcode and XY Mark. However, it is possible to use the older legacy ONYX barcode if preferred. The different mark options include: 1. XY Mark and Postnet Barcode for Automated Cutting: (The default, recommended mark) The XY mark is a horizontal mark that prints along the top of the image, and is used by the cutter to determine image bowing on certain high-temperature printers. The Postnet Barcode allows for multiple jobs to be cut automatically, using the Summa Cut Center. Based on the Summa specification, these marks always print together, even when only one or the other is needed for a particular workflow. 1

Since the current RIPQueue interface does not yet allow cutter-specific mark options, an interim solution was needed to be able to revert to the legacy ONYX barcode to preserve backwards

Legacy ONYX Barcode: This is the old ONYX barcode that allows ONYX CUTServer to retrieve jobs by scanning the barcode on the printed job Enabling the Marks: By default, the XY mark and postnet barcode will be used. Since the current RIPQueue interface does not yet allow cutter-specific mark options, an interim solution was needed to be able to revert to the legacy ONYX barcode to preserve backwards compatibility with existing workflows. This is accomplished by having the print code check for the presence of one file. This file, named XY.no, is located in the ONYX10 directory on your hardrive. This can be an empty text file, as the RIP is only looking for the presence of the file, and not any specific content. If this file is not present, it can be created by right clicking in the root folder and selecting New > Text document. Then rename the file accordingly and ensuring the file extension.txt is not at the end of the file name. In order to use the old legacy ONYX barcode, create the file XY.no. To use the new, default XY mark and postnet barcode, either rename or delete this file. Since the file is checked at print time, the marks can be enabled and disabled without restarting the RIP or CUT-Server. Updated Settings: Summa Cutter Settings have been updated to reflect use of the marks, as well as take advantage of new features and improve the user interface. 1. Using OPOS_XY: In order to use the OPOS_XY setting, the Legacy ONYX Barcode cannot be used. Only the Default Postnet with XY will work with the OPOS_XY setting. 2. Flex Cut: The Flex Cut option automatically creates a type of perforated cut, allowing a cut object to retain just enough material to stay connected to the original print during the cutting process, and yet be easily removed once cutting is complete. 2

The Cut Length and Full Pressure values are used to define the full cut, while Flex Length and Flex Pressure determine the size and thickness of the perforation tabs left behind.

3 Mode 2 is the mode recommended by Summa for most cut jobs. Flex Cutting is done with alternating full cuts, which go completely through the material, and flex cuts, which only cut partway through, leaving a weak, perforated connection. The Cut Length and Full Pressure values are used to define the full cut, while Flex Length and Flex Pressure determine the size and thickness of the perforation tabs left behind. Tool-specific pressure: In previous versions of the driver, the pressure settings for all tools could be set, regardless of which tool was actually selected. In this version of the driver, the pressure settings are disabled for all tools other than the one selected. While not adding any functionality, this change should ease some confusion. Multi-layer cutting: The Summa cutters now support multi-layer cutting. Settings can be created for through-cut, kiss-cut, flexcut, and applied to different cut layers. 3

This device uses a special USB driver, and can connect up to 4 devices. The USB number is configured on the cutter.

4 Port Updates TCP/IP Supports Summa Wireless: CUT-Server now works with the new Summa Wireless connection. Summa recommends setting up the cutter and workstation on an ad-hoc WiFi network. Summa USB support: Summa USB is now supported. This device uses a special USB driver, and can connect up to 4 devices. The USB number is configured on the cutter. Cut to Folder for Barcode Server automated workflow: Cut to Folder creates.plt files that can be used with the Summa Cut Center Barcode Server in an automated scan-and-cut workflow. 4

Summa Cut Center and Barcode Server In addition to cutting directly to the Summa cutters, the ONYX CUT-Server driver now supports the Summa Cut Center and Barcode Server.

5 Summa Cut Center and Barcode Server In addition to cutting directly to the Summa cutters, the ONYX CUT-Server driver now supports the Summa Cut Center and Barcode Server. In order to use this workflow, the ONYX software should be configured to print the Summa Postnet barcode on each job. Print to Folder should be selected in the Summa CUT-Server driver and pointed to a folder that can be accessed by the Summa Cut Center. It may also be advisable to have CUT-Server configured to Automatically Cut New Files. That way the.plt files are automatically generated as the jobs are printed. Once the jobs are printed by RIP-Queue and the.plt files are in the output folder, the jobs can be moved to the Summa Cutter and cut automatically using the Summa Cut Center and the included Barcode Server. In this process, the cutter will scan the barcode on the job, retrieve the cut file from disk, and cut the job. It will then scan the media for the next barcode, and repeat the process until all jobs have been cut.
