1 Using Fetch Fetch is a Macintosh implementation of FTP (File Transfer Protocol). FTP is used to transfer files between two computers over the Internet. Both binary and text files can be transferred with FTP. You must know a userid and its password on the target machine unless it allows anonymous access. If you are FTPing to a VM/CMS site, you will also need to know the read and/or write password depending on whether you are going to get or put a file. Many sites maintain archives of free, public domain software which you can retrieve using anonymous FTP. Instead of using your userid and password, you enter anonymous at the userid prompt, and then your userid and Internet address for the password (e.g., pgreen@vt.edu). Configuring Fetch Before using Fetch the first time, you need to enter the default information for VM1. Find and open Fetch by double-licking. If a dialog box pops up, click Cancel. a. From the Customize menu choose Preferences. b. From the Topic pop-up menu, choose Downloading. c. From the Edit text files with pop-up menu, choose Microsoft Word or your choice of default application. d. Click OK. e. Choose Edit Shortcuts from the Customize menu. f. 2 Enter VM1 in the Shortcut box. Enter vtvm1.cc.vt.edu in the Host box. Enter your VTVM1 userid in the User ID box. Leave the Password box blank. Enter your_vm1_id.191 in the Directory box. For example, jwatson.191. Click OK. g. Select the VM1 Shortcut and click Make Default. Click OK. h. Quit Fetch. You have now configured Fetch. This configuration is saved. Therefore, you do not have to repeat this section the next time you use Fetch. 2 Administrative Client Project

3 Setting a Read Password You must have a read password on your VM account before you can transfer files. Follow these instructions to set a vtvm1 read password. This password should not be the same as your logon password or your Eudora password. And don t worry if you forget it; you can set a new one even if you do not remember the old one. This step also needs to be done only once, or whenever you want to change the read password. 1. Log on to VM1 as usual. 2. Get to the Ready; message. 3. Enter: vmx and your logon password when requested. 4. Pick option TAB to the Read password field and enter a read password. You do not need to know an old password to set a new one. 6. Press RETURN until you are back at the Ready; message. Using Fetch to Download Downloading is the process of moving a file from another computer to your Macintosh. In this case, you will move a file from your VM1 account to your Macintosh. a. Open Fetch by double-clicking. b. Enter your login password and click OK. c. d. You should now see a list of your files. Select the one you want to download. e. Click Get File to move a file from your VM account to the Mac. Use the dialog box to pick a location for the file.

Preparing A CMS Script File A profile is a SCRIPT input file that is imbedded before processing begins on the primary input file. Virginia Tech offers a profile that will produce a text-only version of a document without carriage control or highlighting, if desired. Use the Virginia Tech profile to produce a formatted file on VTVM1 that could then be downloaded to your Macintosh. 4 Administrative Client Project
